A Culinary and Cultural Solo Journey in Hoi An
Day 4: Ancient Echoes and Coastal Breezes: A Day of Discovery in Hoi An
Exploring the spiritual heart of My Son Sanctuary and relaxing on the sandy shores of Cua Dai Beach—a day of history and serenity.
Whispers of the Past, Sands of the Present
Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of ancient history and serene coastal relaxation. It’s funny how travel can sometimes feel like flipping through the pages of a history book one moment and then diving headfirst into a postcard the next. I started the day with a hearty breakfast at Little Faifo Restaurant, fueling up for a journey back in time.

My destination? The My Son Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a relic of the Champa Kingdom that once thrived here. The plan for the day was simple: immerse myself in history in the morning and unwind by the sea in the afternoon. It sounded perfect, and I was eager to get started.

The morning began with the enticing aromas of Little Faifo Restaurant. Tina, who works there, was so friendly and welcoming, she remembered me from my previous visit and asked about my plans for the day. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese breakfast – a steaming bowl of *cao lầu* noodles – a local specialty, which set me up perfectly for the day ahead. It's amazing how a simple meal can connect you to a place and its people. Fueled and ready, I set off towards My Son Sanctuary.
Journey to My Son Sanctuary
The drive to My Son was an experience in itself. As the landscape unfolded, I was treated to scenes of rural Vietnam – rice paddies stretching out towards the horizon, water buffalo grazing lazily, and farmers tending to their fields. It was a world away from the bustling streets of Berlin, a reminder of the simple, agrarian life that still thrives in this part of the world. I couldn't help but think of Mateo back home, and how much he would have loved seeing the water buffalo. I made a mental note to show him pictures and tell him all about it when I get back.
Arriving at My Son, I was immediately struck by the sense of history that permeated the air. The sanctuary is nestled in a lush valley, surrounded by hills and mountains, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring setting. Despite the fact that the site has been partially ruined by time and war, it remains a powerful testament to the Champa civilization that flourished here between the 4th and 13th centuries.
To walk among these ancient stones is to feel the pulse of a civilization long gone, yet still resonating through the centuries.
Exploring the sanctuary, I wandered through the various temple complexes, each with its own unique architectural style and historical significance. The temples were dedicated to Shiva, a principal deity in Hinduism, reflecting the spiritual roots of the Champa Kingdom. I learned that My Son served not only as a religious center but also as a burial site for kings and religious leaders. It was fascinating to imagine the ceremonies and rituals that once took place here, the echoes of which seemed to linger in the very stones.
It's incredible how different cultures and traditions have left their mark on this land. French, Polish, and Vietnamese researchers have found that My Son was influenced by Arabian, Malaysian, Indonesian, and particularly Indian traditions. The red bricks and sandstone used to construct the towers demonstrate the intelligence of the Champa people from centuries ago.
As I walked around, I couldn't help but notice the damage inflicted on the site by the Vietnam War. Bomb craters scarred the landscape, and many of the temples were reduced to rubble. It was a sobering reminder of the human cost of conflict and the fragility of cultural heritage. Despite the destruction, restoration efforts have been ongoing since 1975, and it was heartening to see the dedication and care being put into preserving what remains.
Lunch at HOME and Afternoon at Cua Dai Beach
After a morning of historical exploration, it was time for a change of pace. I drove back to Hoi An and headed to HOME Vietnamese Restaurant for lunch. This restaurant is known for its authentic Vietnamese dishes, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. I decided to try the *cơm hến* (clam rice) and claypot beef – two local favorites that came highly recommended. The food was delicious, the service impeccable, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxing midday meal.

With my belly full and my spirits high, I made my way to Cua Dai Beach. The beach is located just a few kilometers from Hoi An, and it's known for its soft white sand and clear turquoise water. October is a great time to visit, as the rainy season is coming to an end, and the weather is generally warm and sunny. Though some sources mention the possibility of typhoons at this time of year, today was perfect – clear skies and a gentle breeze.

Arriving at Cua Dai Beach, I was immediately struck by its beauty. The sand was soft and inviting, and the water sparkled in the sunlight. I found a spot under a palm-roofed umbrella and settled in for an afternoon of relaxation. I took a dip in the sea, the cool water a welcome contrast to the warmth of the sun. I spent some time reading, jotting down notes in my travel journal, and simply soaking up the peaceful atmosphere. I even managed to catch a glimpse of the local fishermen bringing in their catch of the day – a scene that felt both timeless and authentic.
As the afternoon wore on, I decided to take a walk along the beach. The sun was beginning to dip towards the horizon, casting a golden glow over the sand and sea. I watched as families played in the surf, couples strolled hand-in-hand, and children built sandcastles. It was a scene of simple joy and contentment, a reminder of the universal pleasures of life.
Sunset and Soul Kitchen
As the sun began to set, I made my way to Soul Kitchen, a beach bar and restaurant known for its laid-back vibe and stunning views. I ordered a refreshing cocktail and settled into a comfortable lounge chair, watching as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The music was mellow, the atmosphere relaxed, and the company convivial. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

I savored a delightful dinner at Soul Kitchen. The menu offered a mix of Western and Vietnamese dishes, and I decided to try the grilled seafood skewers – a delicious assortment of prawns and squid. The seafood was fresh and flavorful, and the meal was a fitting end to a day of culinary exploration. I thought about Lena and how she would have loved this place. I imagined us sitting here together, watching the sunset and sipping cocktails. Next time, I promised myself, I’ll bring her here.
Before heading back to the hotel, I enjoyed one last drink at the bar. The conversation flowed easily, and I found myself chatting with fellow travelers from all over the world. We shared stories, laughed, and marveled at the beauty of the moment. It was a reminder of the power of travel to connect people and create lasting memories.
Tomorrow, I’m planning to visit Tra Que Village House and Thanh Ha Pottery Village. I’m looking forward to experiencing more of Hoi An’s local culture and traditions. But for tonight, I’m content to savor the memories of a day well-spent – a day of ancient echoes and coastal breezes, a day of discovery and relaxation, a day that captured the essence of Hoi An's charm.
Back at the Hoi An Historic Hotel, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. Today had been a perfect blend of history, culture, and relaxation. I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of ancient temples and sun-kissed beaches, the whispers of the past mingling with the gentle rhythm of the waves.
