A Farewell to Kyoto's Charms

As my solo journey through Kyoto draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had. Today was a day of quiet contemplation and cultural immersion, a perfect send-off before I return to Bonn. While I am looking forward to seeing Hans and Sofia, a part of me will remain here, amidst the ancient temples and serene gardens.

My day began, as many do, with a hearty breakfast. I ventured out to Mezopotamia Kebab House, a recommendation I'd stumbled upon in a forum for Halal food. I was initially surprised to find a kebab house in Japan, but the reviews were too good to ignore. And they were right! The kebab was delicious, a delightful fusion of flavors that somehow felt both familiar and exotic. It was a great way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

First on the agenda was Shorenin Temple, nestled in the foothills of the Higashiyama Mountains. As I wandered through the temple grounds, I was immediately struck by the tranquility of the place. The manicured gardens, with their meticulously placed stones and mossy pathways, exuded a sense of peace and harmony. The temple itself was beautiful, with ornate fusuma paintings and delicate details that spoke to its rich history. I took my time here, savoring the quiet atmosphere and reflecting on my journey.

Leaving Shorenin Temple, I decided to delve into the world of textiles at the Kyoto Shibori Museum. Now, I'll be honest, I've never been particularly interested in tie-dye, but I was intrigued by the museum's focus on shibori, a traditional Japanese dyeing technique. And I must say, I was completely blown away by the artistry and skill involved. The intricate patterns and vibrant colors of the shibori fabrics were truly stunning. I learned about the different techniques used to create these textiles, from simple folding and clamping to complex stitching and binding. I even considered taking one of their workshops, but decided to save that for a future visit, perhaps with Sofia – I think she would love it!

Lunch was a simple affair at Kyo-komono Kinugasa, a charming little shop near Ryoanji Temple. While primarily a souvenir shop selling small Japanese articles, it also offered a small selection of local snacks. I enjoyed a light meal of traditional sweets and green tea, while browsing the shop's collection of Kyoto accessories. It was the perfect spot to rest and recharge before continuing my explorations. I picked up a small silk pouch as a memento of my trip, something to remind me of the beauty and craftsmanship I've encountered here.

In the afternoon, I ventured further afield to Rengeji Temple, a hidden gem tucked away in a quiet corner of Kyoto. This temple was a bit more off the beaten path, and I found myself almost alone as I wandered through its serene gardens. The temple had a palpable sense of history, and I felt a deep connection to the past as I explored its ancient halls and peaceful courtyards. According to some sources, this temple has some ties to mass Samurai suicide. It was a truly special place, a reminder of the enduring power of faith and tradition.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to a farewell dinner at Teppanyaki Minami. I wanted to experience the artistry and skill of teppanyaki cooking one last time before leaving Japan. And it was an experience to remember! The chef was a true master of his craft, creating a dazzling display of culinary skill as he prepared my meal on the sizzling grill. The food was exquisite, each bite a burst of flavor and texture. It was the perfect way to celebrate my journey and savor the last moments of my time in Kyoto.

To end my final night, I decided to check out the Turquoise Bar, a cozy spot I read about that had a wide selection of unique cocktails. I enjoyed a quiet drink, reflecting on all the wonderful things I'd seen and done during my trip. The bartender was friendly, and we chatted about my travels and his favorite spots in Kyoto. It was a pleasant and relaxing way to end the day.

As I pack my bags tonight, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and contentment. Kyoto has exceeded all my expectations. I've immersed myself in its rich history and culture, explored its ancient temples and serene gardens, and savored its delicious cuisine. This solo journey has been a transformative experience, one that I will cherish for years to come. While I am eager to return to my family in Bonn, I know that a part of me will always remain here, in the heart of Japan.

Tomorrow, I begin my journey home. It's bittersweet, of course. I will miss the serene beauty of Kyoto, the delicious food, and the friendly people. But I am also excited to see Hans and Sofia, to share my stories and experiences with them. I know they are eager to hear all about my adventures, and I can't wait to tell them. Until next time, Kyoto, *Arigato*!

P.S. I really need to remember to buy a universal travel adapter before my next trip! And sunscreen! These essentials will definitely be on my packing list from now on. Also, I am already thinking about bringing Hans and Sofia here. Perhaps next year during cherry blossom season?
