A Day of Cultural Immersion in Kyoto

Today was a whirlwind of cultural exploration, a day dedicated to the unique facets of Kyoto that often get overshadowed by its temples and shrines. It was a journey through time and imagination, starting with the industrial marvels of Japan's railway history and ending in the opulent halls of a Shogunate castle. I couldn't wait to dive in, camera in hand, ready to capture every moment.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Ajikyu. I had read about this tiny *izakaya* online and I was keen to try it. I was not disappointed! It was a small, intimate place where the food was incredible and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

All Aboard the History Train!

The first stop was the Kyoto Railway Museum. Now, I know what you might be thinking: a railway museum? But trust me, this place is a hidden gem, even for someone like me who doesn't consider herself a train enthusiast. It was easy to reach, and I was immediately impressed by the sheer scale of the place. It's not just about trains; it's about the history of Japan's modernization, told through the lens of its railway system. I was amazed by the collection of locomotives, from the sleek Shinkansen bullet trains to the charming steam engines of yesteryear. I even got a chance to climb aboard some of them, imagining what it must have been like to travel across Japan in a different era. It was fascinating to see how the railway has shaped the country's landscape and its people's lives. I was particularly impressed by the detailed exhibits explaining the engineering behind these iron horses. Sofia would have absolutely loved the interactive displays and the miniature railway diorama; I'll definitely have to bring her here someday.

Manga Mania at the International Manga Museum

After immersing myself in the world of trains, I headed to the Kyoto International Manga Museum. This was a completely different experience, a vibrant explosion of color and creativity. Housed in a former elementary school, the museum is a testament to the global appeal of Japanese comics. As someone who appreciates visual storytelling, I was captivated by the sheer variety of manga on display. From classic series to contemporary works, the museum's collection spans decades and genres. I spent hours browsing the shelves, discovering new artists and revisiting old favorites. I even tried my hand at drawing my own manga character, with predictably disastrous results! The museum is a celebration of manga culture, a place where fans of all ages can come together to share their passion. It reminded me of my own childhood, poring over Asterix comics and dreaming of faraway lands. Hans, who is a big fan of Japanese culture, would have been in heaven here.

Stepping Back in Time at Nijo Castle

My final destination for the day was Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site that served as the Kyoto residence of the Tokugawa shoguns. This was a truly awe-inspiring experience, a glimpse into the opulent world of feudal Japan. The castle's main attraction is the Ninomaru Palace, a stunning example of traditional Japanese architecture. As I walked through the palace's many rooms, I couldn't help but marvel at the intricate details of the painted screens and the delicate craftsmanship of the wooden structures. The famous nightingale floors, designed to squeak underfoot to warn of intruders, added an extra layer of intrigue to the experience. Stepping into Nijo Castle felt like stepping back in time, a journey into the heart of Japan's rich history. The gardens surrounding the castle were equally impressive, a serene oasis of manicured lawns, tranquil ponds, and ancient trees. I took a leisurely stroll through the gardens, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere and reflecting on the day's adventures.

Before heading back to the hotel, I stopped by Harajuku Chicago Kyoto Store. I had read about this used clothing store and I was keen to find some unique pieces. I was not disappointed! I was able to find a beautiful vintage kimono at a shockingly reasonable price. It was the perfect souvenir to remind me of my trip to Kyoto.

Dining Like a Local

For lunch, I ventured into Arash's Kitchen, a Persian and Indian restaurant I stumbled upon. It was a delightful surprise. I opted for the Kabab Kubideh Lunch, and it was absolutely delicious! A fusion of flavors that I wouldn't necessarily associate with Kyoto, but it was a welcome change of pace. The spices were fragrant, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was cozy. It was a reminder that Kyoto is not just about traditional Japanese cuisine; it's a city with a diverse culinary scene that caters to all tastes.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at Kikuichimonjushirokanenaga honten, a restaurant renowned for its exquisite Kyoto cuisine. It was a culinary experience unlike any other, a symphony of flavors and textures that showcased the best of local ingredients. The presentation was impeccable, each dish a work of art in its own right. It was a fitting end to a day of cultural immersion, a celebration of Kyoto's rich heritage and its vibrant present.

Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.

Reflecting on today’s journey, I’m reminded of how much there is to discover beyond the well-trodden tourist paths. Kyoto is a city that rewards curiosity, offering a blend of experiences that cater to diverse interests. Tomorrow marks the last day of my solo adventure. I plan to visit Shorenin Temple, Kyoto Shibori Museum, and Rengeji Temple. I might even treat myself to a drink at the Turquoise Bar to celebrate the end of a memorable trip.

As I prepare for my journey back to Bonn, I feel grateful for the opportunity to have experienced the magic of Kyoto. It's a city that has captured my heart, a place I know I'll return to again and again. And who knows, maybe next time I'll bring Hans and Sofia along for the ride.
