Whispers of the Mountains

Today was a day of venturing into the serene northern reaches of Kyoto, a journey that resonated deeply with my soul. Leaving the familiar streets of the city behind, I sought solace and inspiration in the ancient temples and shrines nestled in the mountains. It was a day of spiritual exploration, punctuated by moments of culinary delight.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Arancino Kyoto. The Italian flavors were a delightful start, fueling me for the day's adventures. I must admit, the idea of starting my day with Italian cuisine in the heart of Kyoto felt a bit odd, but the reviews were too tempting to ignore! I was not disappointed. The restaurant exuded elegance, the food was delicious, and the service was impeccable.

My first stop was the enchanting Kuramadera Temple. To reach it, I had the option of a cable car or a hike, and I chose the latter, wanting to immerse myself in the natural beauty of the mountain. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of cedar and pine. As I ascended, I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me, a feeling that only deepened as I approached the temple grounds.

Kuramadera Temple is steeped in history and legend. Founded in 770, it has been a place of spiritual significance for centuries. It is said that the temple was established by a disciple of Jianzhen, who, in a dream, saw the spiritual power of Mount Kurama. The temple is also known as the birthplace of Reiki, a form of energy therapy. As I walked through the temple complex, I couldn't help but feel the palpable sense of history and spirituality that permeated the air.

The journey to inner peace often requires us to climb mountains, both literal and metaphorical.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Kuramadera is its association with the Tengu, mythical creatures often depicted with long noses and wings. These beings are believed to be guardians of the mountain, and their presence is felt throughout the area. Statues and artwork depicting Tengu can be found throughout the temple complex, adding to the mystical atmosphere.

After exploring Kuramadera, I continued my journey to Kifune Shrine, nestled deeper in the mountains. The path connecting Kurama and Kibune is a beautiful, winding trail that follows the Kifune River. The sound of the flowing water was incredibly soothing, creating a sense of peace and harmony. As I walked, I reflected on the words of Hans, who often reminds me to find joy in the simple things, like the sound of water or the rustling of leaves.

Kifune Shrine is dedicated to the god of water, and it has a long and fascinating history. According to legend, a goddess arrived in Kibune on a yellow boat, and the shrine marks the spot where she landed. The shrine is known for its iconic stone staircase, lined with red lanterns, which creates a magical atmosphere, especially in the evening. Though I visited during the day, the charm was undeniable.

One of the unique traditions of Kifune Shrine is water fortune-telling. For a small fee, you can purchase a blank piece of paper, which reveals your fortune when placed in the shrine's sacred water. It’s a lovely, interactive way to engage with the shrine’s spiritual essence. The shrine is also associated with the Ushi no toki mairi, a ritual of cursing enemies performed in the hour of the Ox (between 1 and 3 am). While I didn't participate in any cursing rituals, I found the history intriguing.

My final stop of the day was Kamigamo Shrine, one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Kyoto and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The shrine is dedicated to Kamo Wakeikazuchi no Okami, a deity associated with thunder and lightning. The serene atmosphere of the shrine was palpable, and I spent some time wandering through the grounds, admiring the traditional architecture and the meticulously maintained gardens.

Kamigamo Shrine is known for its two sand cones, called tatesuna, which are believed to purify the sanctuary. The shrine has a long history of imperial patronage, and it has been venerated by emperors and nobles for centuries. It is also associated with the Aoi Festival, one of Kyoto's most important festivals, which dates back to the 6th century.

After a day of exploring these spiritual sanctuaries, I was ready for a delicious meal. I decided to treat myself to lunch at Sakuragawa. The restaurant is known for its traditional Japanese cuisine, and it has received high praise for its authentic flavors and elegant presentation. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such culinary artistry.

In the late afternoon, before heading back to the hotel, I stopped by Inobun, a well-known boutique in Kyoto. The shop offers a variety of lifestyle goods, from fashion accessories to kitchenware. It was a delightful place to browse, and I found a few small souvenirs to bring back home. I even picked up a beautiful silk scarf for Sofia; I know she'll adore the intricate designs.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at French Dining Top of Kyoto. Located atop the Rihga Royal Hotel, this revolving restaurant offered stunning panoramic views of the city. The French cuisine was exquisite, and the ambiance was elegant and romantic. It was the perfect way to end a day of spiritual and culinary exploration.

Thinking about tomorrow, I'm excited to explore more of Kyoto's cultural treasures. The itinerary includes a visit to the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, Kawai Kanjiro's House, and Kenninji Temple. I'm also looking forward to trying some local sake at Bar K6 in the evening. I can’t wait to immerse myself further in the beauty and history of this captivating city.

Tonight, as I reflect on my day, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to travel and explore new cultures. Kyoto has a way of captivating the soul, and I am eager to see what tomorrow brings. Goodnight from Kyoto!
