Kyoto's Hidden Gems: A Day of Sake, Art, and Serenity

Today was a journey into the heart of Kyoto, a day where I embraced the city's diverse offerings. From the nuanced flavors of sake to the intimate world of a ceramic artist and the peaceful ambiance of an ancient temple, Kyoto revealed itself in layers, each more captivating than the last. It was a day of solo exploration, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the experiences and connect with the city on a deeper level.

My day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Tategami. The restaurant was a serene escape from the bustling city, with its minimalist decor and calming atmosphere. The breakfast set was a delightful array of small dishes, each bursting with flavor and artistry. From the perfectly grilled fish to the delicate tofu and the savory miso soup, it was a symphony of tastes that awakened my senses and prepared me for the day ahead.

With a satisfied stomach and a spring in my step, I headed to Fushimi, a district renowned for its sake breweries. My destination was the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, a place I had been eagerly anticipating visiting. As a librarian with a penchant for history, I was excited to learn about the intricate process of sake brewing and the rich heritage of Gekkeikan, a brewery with a legacy spanning over 380 years. The museum was housed in a beautifully preserved wooden brewery dating back to 1909, its traditional architecture exuding an old-world charm that transported me back in time. Inside, I wandered through exhibits showcasing the history of sake, the various brewing techniques, and the tools used by generations of sake masters. I was fascinated by the meticulous attention to detail that goes into every step of the process, from the selection of the finest rice to the careful fermentation and aging.

The true beauty of a journey lies not just in seeing new sights, but in experiencing them with an open heart and a curious mind.

The highlight of the museum visit was, of course, the sake tasting. With my admission ticket, I received three tokens that I could exchange for samples of different Gekkeikan sakes. I carefully selected a Junmai Daiginjo, a Honjozo, and a Nigori, each representing a different style and flavor profile. As I swirled the sake in my glass, I admired its clarity and subtle aromas. The Junmai Daiginjo was delicate and fruity, the Honjozo was rich and complex, and the Nigori was creamy and sweet. I savored each sip, appreciating the nuances of flavor and the craftsmanship that went into creating these exquisite beverages. I even picked up a bottle of my favorite to take back to Hans, knowing he'd appreciate a taste of my Kyoto adventures.

Leaving the museum with a newfound appreciation for sake, I made my way to Kawai Kanjiro's House, a hidden gem nestled in the Higashiyama district. Kawai Kanjiro was a renowned ceramic artist and one of the founders of the Mingei movement, which celebrated Japanese folk crafts. His house, now a museum, offered a glimpse into his life and artistic vision. As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the warm and inviting atmosphere. The house was a harmonious blend of traditional Japanese architecture and rustic charm, with exposed wooden beams, tatami mats, and carefully arranged displays of Kawai's pottery, sculptures, and furniture.

I wandered through the rooms, admiring the artist's creations and imagining him at work in his studio. His pieces were characterized by their simplicity, functionality, and boldness, reflecting his belief in the beauty of everyday objects. I was particularly drawn to his teacups and bowls, which had a sense of warmth and intimacy that made me want to hold them in my hands. The house itself was a work of art, with its thoughtfully designed spaces and carefully chosen details. I was impressed by the way Kawai had integrated his living quarters with his studio and kilns, creating a seamless flow between his personal life and his artistic practice.

After immersing myself in the world of Kawai Kanjiro, I sought a moment of tranquility at Kenninji Temple, Kyoto's oldest Zen temple. Founded in 1202 by Eisai, the monk who introduced Zen Buddhism and tea cultivation to Japan, Kenninji offered a serene escape from the bustling city. As I entered the temple grounds, I was enveloped by a sense of calm and reverence. The air was crisp and clean, and the only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the distant chanting of monks.

I strolled through the temple's meticulously maintained gardens, admiring the carefully raked gravel, the moss-covered stones, and the ancient trees. The gardens were designed to promote contemplation and meditation, and I found myself lost in thought as I wandered along the winding paths. I visited the Hojo, the abbot's quarters, and admired the stunning screen paintings of the Wind and Thunder Gods, masterpieces of Japanese art. I also marveled at the twin dragons painted on the ceiling of the Dharma Hall, a colossal mural that seemed to soar above me.

Kenninji was more than just a beautiful temple; it was a place of spiritual significance. I sat in the main hall, closed my eyes, and listened to the rhythmic chanting of the monks. I felt a sense of peace wash over me, as if the weight of the world had been lifted from my shoulders. In that moment, I understood the essence of Zen Buddhism – the search for enlightenment through meditation and mindfulness.

As the sun began to set, I treated myself to a delightful dinner at Yoshikawa, a renowned tempura restaurant. The restaurant was located in a traditional Japanese building with a beautiful garden, creating an elegant and tranquil atmosphere. I sat at the counter, watching the chef skillfully prepare each piece of tempura with precision and care. The tempura was light, crispy, and bursting with flavor, each ingredient perfectly cooked and seasoned. From the delicate prawns to the succulent vegetables, it was a culinary masterpiece that delighted my senses. The meal was a perfect ending to a day of exploration and discovery.

To cap off the evening, I decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife at Bar K6, a cozy jazz hideaway known for its expertly crafted cocktails. The bar was intimate and dimly lit, with a sophisticated ambiance that made me feel like I had stepped back in time. I ordered a classic martini, expertly mixed by the bartender, and savored each sip as I listened to the smooth jazz melodies. The music, the ambiance, and the drink created a perfect harmony, a moment of pure bliss that I will cherish forever.

As I reflect on today's journey, I realize how much Kyoto has to offer. It is a city of contrasts, where ancient traditions meet modern innovations, where bustling streets give way to tranquil gardens, and where the simple act of savoring a cup of sake can become a profound experience. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit the Shugakuin Imperial Villa, Eikando Temple, and Kodaiji Temple. And perhaps a bit of shopping at the MoMA Design Store. Good night from Kyoto!
