Reaching New Heights in Machu Picchu

Today was a day of conquering literal and metaphorical heights here in Machu Picchu. As a librarian, I usually find myself surrounded by towering stacks of books, but today, I traded those for towering mountains. It was an adventure filled with breathtaking views, delicious food, and a touch of nightlife that left me feeling invigorated and deeply connected to this magical place.

My day began early, fueled by excitement and a hearty breakfast at Tao Dulce Salado. The empanadas were the perfect start, offering a delightful mix of savory and flaky goodness. It was a cozy spot near the train station, the staff were friendly and the atmosphere was relaxing. With a spring in my step, I set off to tackle Phutuq K'usi.

The hike up Phutuq K'usi was certainly a challenge. It's a round-shaped mountain across the Urubamba River from Machu Picchu, and the views promised to be spectacular. The ascent was steep, and I definitely felt the altitude, reminding me of hiking in the Siebengebirge back home near Bonn, though those hills are mere bumps compared to this! I had to take several breaks, but the panoramic vistas that unfolded with each upward step were more than worth the effort. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence, broken only by the occasional bird call, was profound. I felt a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones that push you beyond your comfort zone, revealing a strength you never knew you possessed.

After descending Phutuq K'usi, I decided to challenge myself further by hiking Mount Machu Picchu.

While not as steep as Huayna Picchu, it was still a moderately difficult climb, requiring good fitness and preparation. The trail was a mix of Inca stonework and mountain paths, gaining a significant elevation. I took my time, enjoying the unique views of the Machu Picchu ruins and the surrounding natural beauty. The limited flat areas made it tiring, but the grippy surface of the steps was a comfort. Reaching the summit was an incredible feeling, a true accomplishment that left me breathless in more ways than one. I felt as though I was on top of the world.

By the time I made it back down, I was ravenous. Lunch at The Peruvian Flavor was exactly what I needed.

I opted for the lomo saltado, a classic Peruvian dish of stir-fried beef with onions, tomatoes, and potatoes, and it was absolutely divine. The flavors were rich and satisfying, and the portion was generous, perfect for refueling after my strenuous hikes. It reminded me of the wonderful Peruvian restaurants I've heard about, and must try, in Pleasantville, New York.

As evening approached, I found myself drawn to Terraza Cósmica by Supertramp, a bar with a reputation for its stunning views and creative cocktails.

I decided to treat myself to a Pisco Sour, Peru's national drink, as I watched the sunset over the mountains. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and I struck up a conversation with a couple from Argentina who were equally mesmerized by the beauty of Machu Picchu. We shared stories and laughter, and I felt a sense of camaraderie that is so unique to travel.

Dinner was at Ponchos Machupicchu Restaurant, and it was an experience in itself.

The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and the staff were very welcoming. I decided to try the aji de gallina, a creamy chicken stew that was both comforting and flavorful. The presentation was beautiful, and every bite was a delight. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure.

Reflecting on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the magic of Machu Picchu in such a profound way. The physical challenges were significant, but the rewards were immeasurable. I pushed myself beyond my limits and discovered a strength and resilience I didn't know I possessed. And as I prepare for tomorrow's adventure along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and Runkurakay, I know I'm ready for whatever lies ahead. The thought of walking along the ancient path, surrounded by the breathtaking scenery, fills me with excitement. I'm especially looking forward to seeing Runkurakay, an oval-shaped ruin that was likely a tambo, or resting place, for travelers along the Inca Trail. It's another piece of the puzzle that makes up the rich history of this region, and I can't wait to explore it.

But for now, I'll rest and dream of the adventures yet to come. Good night from Aguas Calientes!

P.S. I almost forgot! I saw a poster today advertising a concert in Lima on October 18th by Il Volo, the Italian operatic pop trio. It's tempting to extend my stay in Peru just to see them perform. Perhaps I'll decide after conquering the Inca Trail tomorrow. And I must remember to buy a rain poncho, as the weather in October can be unpredictable.
