Day 7: Conquering Heights: Machu Picchu Peak and the Whispers of Puyupatamarca
Scaling Machu Picchu Peak and exploring Puyupatamarca, where ancient Inca stones meet breathtaking vistas. A day of wonder in Peru.
Reaching for the Sky
Today was a day of breathtaking heights and humbling history. The air was crisp, the sun was shining, and the spirit of the Andes was palpable. I set out to conquer Machu Picchu Peak and to explore the ruins of Puyupatamarca, ready to immerse myself fully in the ancient world.

My day began with an early breakfast at Cafelu Restaurant. The aroma of freshly brewed Peruvian coffee filled the air, mingling with the sweet scent of pastries. It was the perfect way to fuel up before tackling the ascent to Machu Picchu Peak. I opted for a hearty breakfast of eggs and local bread, savoring each bite as I mentally prepared for the climb ahead. It reminded me of mornings in Teruel, Spain, where a good breakfast was the foundation of a productive day. I chuckled, remembering Hans's preference for German Brotchen, a stark contrast to my beloved pan con tomate.
With renewed energy, I started my trek up Machu Picchu Mountain. The trail was challenging, a steep and winding path that tested my endurance. The steps, some original Inca stonework, were uneven, demanding careful footing. As I ascended, the views became increasingly spectacular. The iconic citadel of Machu Picchu unfolded beneath me, a breathtaking panorama of ancient ingenuity and natural beauty. The air grew thinner, and I paused frequently to catch my breath, reminding myself to acclimatize, a lesson I learned the hard way during a hiking trip in the Siebengebirge mountains near Bonn. The ascent was strenuous, but the sheer magnificence of the landscape spurred me onward.
Sometimes, the greatest journeys are those that challenge us the most, revealing the hidden strengths we never knew we possessed.Reaching the summit of Machu Picchu Peak was an exhilarating experience. The panoramic views were simply unparalleled. From this vantage point, I could see the entire Machu Picchu complex, the surrounding mountains, and the snaking Urubamba River below. It was a moment of profound awe, a feeling of being suspended between the earth and the sky. I spent a long time at the top, simply absorbing the beauty and the energy of this sacred place. I took countless photos, trying to capture the essence of the moment, knowing full well that no image could ever truly do it justice.
After descending from Machu Picchu Peak, my next destination was Puyupatamarca, an Inca site along the Inca Trail. Known as the City Above the Clouds, Puyupatamarca sits at an altitude of roughly 3,200 meters. The site is remarkably well-preserved, offering a fascinating glimpse into Inca life and engineering. As I explored the ruins, I marveled at the intricate stonework and the ingenious water systems that the Incas had developed. The five small stone baths, still containing fresh running water, were a testament to their advanced knowledge of hydraulics. The mist swirled around the site, adding to its mystical atmosphere, and I could almost hear the whispers of the past, the echoes of the people who once lived and thrived in this remote mountain sanctuary.

For lunch, I ventured to El museo de la papa rest, enticed by the promise of traditional Peruvian cuisine. As a librarian specializing in historical archives, I always appreciate delving into the cultural heritage of a place, and food is such an integral part of that. The restaurant did not disappoint. I sampled a variety of potato dishes, each one showcasing the incredible diversity of this Andean staple. It was a culinary journey through Peru's agricultural history, and I relished every bite.

In the late afternoon, I strolled through the gift market in Aguas Calientes. The market was a vibrant hub of local culture, a sensory feast of colors, sounds, and smells. I wandered through the stalls, admiring the handcrafted souvenirs, from intricately woven textiles to beautifully painted ceramics. I chatted with the local vendors, learning about their craft and their lives. I purchased a few small items, tokens to remind me of my time in Machu Picchu and gifts for Sofia and Hans. I made sure to buy local, supporting the artisans and preserving traditional Peruvian craftsmanship.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at Restaurante Chicha Grill Cuisine. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the menu featured a tempting array of grilled specialties. I opted for the grilled alpaca steak, a local delicacy, and savored each tender, flavorful bite. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Phutuq K'usi and Mount Machu Picchu, seeking out more hidden gems and breathtaking views. I am also planning to have dinner at Ponchos Machupicchu Restaurant and visit Terraza Cósmica by Supertramp. I am also considering buying a poncho, since I forgot to pack a rain poncho. As I reflect on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Machu Picchu is more than just an ancient site; it is a place of profound beauty and spiritual energy, a place that touches the soul and inspires the imagination. It’s a place that reminds me of the importance of preserving our history and cherishing our cultural heritage. And as I prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation, eager to discover what new wonders await me in this magical land.
My thoughts drift back to Bonn, to Hans and Sofia. I miss them dearly, but I know that this solo journey is something I need to do, a chance to reconnect with myself and to explore my own passions. I smile, imagining Sofia's excitement when I return with stories of ancient civilizations and towering mountains. And I know that Hans, ever the supportive husband, will be waiting with open arms, ready to hear all about my adventures.
