Whispers of the Past on Huayna Picchu

Today was a day of physical challenge and profound historical immersion. I ventured up Huayna Picchu, explored the Temple of the Moon, and savored the local flavors of Aguas Calientes. It’s days like these that remind me why I set out on this solo adventure in the first place – to connect deeply with history and experience the thrill of discovery.

My day began with an early breakfast at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant [i]. I was hoping to sample some local brews, but the early hour called for something a bit tamer. I settled for a hearty breakfast that would fuel my climb. The restaurant had a cool breeze, but the beer was awful ! As I ate, I planned my ascent up Huayna Picchu, the iconic mountain that looms over Machu Picchu.

The hike up Huayna Picchu is not for the faint of heart. The trail is steep and narrow, with sections known as the “Stairs of Death”. Despite the challenges, the views were incredible. As I climbed, I imagined the Inca people who once traversed these same paths, their lives intertwined with this majestic landscape. The air was crisp, and the views of the surrounding mountains were breathtaking. October in Machu Picchu offers mild temperatures, with daytime highs around 19°C (66°F), though occasional showers are common. Fortunately, the weather held, and I enjoyed clear skies for most of my climb.

The journey to the summit of Huayna Picchu is a physical and spiritual ascent, offering a unique perspective on the ingenuity and reverence of the Inca civilization.

Reaching the summit of Huayna Picchu was exhilarating. From the top, I could see the entire Machu Picchu complex spread out below me, a testament to the incredible engineering and architectural skills of the Inca. I spent some time soaking in the panoramic views, capturing photos, and reflecting on the history that surrounded me. It was a moment of profound connection to the past, a feeling that resonated deeply with my librarian's heart.

After descending Huayna Picchu, I set off to explore the Temple of the Moon, a hidden gem nestled on the mountain's northern face. The trail to the temple was steep and less traveled, adding to the sense of adventure. The Temple of the Moon is built into a natural cave and features intricate stonework and niches. It is believed that the Incas used the temple for ceremonial purposes, possibly as a place of worship or a royal tomb. The energy of the place was palpable, a sense of mystery and reverence that lingered in the air.

The purpose of the Temple of the Moon remains a mystery, with theories ranging from a royal tomb to a place of worship. Some believe it was a site for sacrifices, given the altar-like rock formations. Others suggest it was connected to lunar worship, with moonlight illuminating the cave's interior. Regardless of its exact purpose, the temple exuded a powerful sense of history and spirituality. The stonework was impressive, with depictions of the three planes of Incan religion: the heavens (Hanan Pacha), the earth (Kay Pacha), and the underworld (Ukju Pacha), represented by the condor, puma, and snake, respectively.

After a day of hiking and exploring, I was ready for a hearty lunch. I stopped at Magguis Grill Craft Beer for a well-deserved meal. I enjoyed some Peruvian cuisine, reflecting on the day's adventures. The ceviche was particularly good, a refreshing and flavorful dish that revitalized my senses.

In the evening, I decided to try Apu Inti Restaurante for dinner. The restaurant offered a cozy atmosphere and a menu of Andean, Peruvian, and international dishes. I opted for a traditional Peruvian dish, savoring the flavors and reflecting on the incredible day I had experienced. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with history, adventure, and cultural immersion.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I stopped by Green PUB machupicchu for a nightcap. The pub had a lively atmosphere, and I enjoyed a refreshing coconut mojito, a popular choice among visitors. It was a great way to unwind and soak in the vibrant energy of Aguas Calientes. I thought of Hans and Sofia back in Bonn, and how much they would have enjoyed the day's discoveries. I promised myself to bring them back one day, so they could experience the magic of Machu Picchu firsthand.

As I reflect on today, I am reminded of the importance of solo travel. It allows me to fully immerse myself in the experience, to connect with the history and culture of a place on a deeper level. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Machu Picchu Peak and Puyupatamarca, continuing my journey through this ancient land. I'm also hoping to pick up a few gifts at the local gift market. And of course, sample more of the local cuisine!

October in Cusco is a month of festivals, and while I didn't witness any specific events today, I am aware of the rich cultural heritage of the region. The Virgen del Rosario Festival and the Lord of Miracles Festival are just a few of the celebrations that take place this month, blending religious traditions with Andean culture. I hope to experience some of these festivities in the coming days, adding another layer to my understanding of this fascinating place.

For now, I'm content to rest and prepare for another day of exploration. Machu Picchu continues to captivate and inspire, offering endless opportunities for discovery and reflection. And who knows what stories tomorrow will bring?

Until then, ¡adiós from Aguas Calientes!

P.S. I really need to remember to pack a portable phone charger next time. My phone almost died, and I would have missed capturing some incredible photos!
