Discovering the charm of Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu, with its local culture, cuisine, and hidden gems on day one.
Arrival in Aguas Calientes: A Promising Start
After a long journey from Bonn, via Lima and Cusco, I've finally arrived in Aguas Calientes, the town nestled at the foot of Machu Picchu. The air is thick with anticipation, a blend of excitement and the lingering scent of woodsmoke from the local restaurants. While the journey was tiring, the promise of exploring this gateway to the ancient Inca citadel has already invigorated me.

The train ride from Cusco was nothing short of spectacular. The scenery transformed from rolling green hills to dramatic mountainscapes, the Urubamba River snaking alongside the tracks like a silver ribbon. I must admit, I did doze off for a bit, the gentle rocking of the train a lullaby after so many hours of travel. But even in my half-sleep, I could sense the shift in atmosphere, the palpable energy of a place steeped in history and mystery.
My first order of business was to find a decent breakfast. La Boulangerie de Paris - Machupicchu, with its promise of authentic French pastries, was an obvious choice. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee was irresistible, a comforting reminder of home amidst the unfamiliar surroundings. I treated myself to an almond croissant and a café con leche, savoring every bite as I watched the town slowly awaken. It's amazing how a simple pastry can bridge the gap between cultures, a shared moment of indulgence that transcends language barriers.

Fuelled and ready to explore, I decided to visit the Manuel Chávez Ballón Site Museum. It was about a thirty-minute walk from Aguas Calientes. Tucked away from the bustling center, the museum offered a tranquil escape and a fascinating introduction to the history of Machu Picchu. Named after the esteemed archaeologist, the museum houses a collection of artifacts recovered from the site, providing valuable context for understanding the Inca civilization.

Visiting the Manuel Chávez Ballón Site Museum offered a deeper appreciation for the Inca civilization and the mysteries surrounding Machu Picchu.
As a librarian specializing in historical archives, I was particularly drawn to the displays of ceramics, metalwork, and stone tools. Each piece told a story, a silent testament to the ingenuity and artistry of the Inca people. The museum also shed light on the discovery of Machu Picchu in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, adding another layer to the narrative. I spent a good couple of hours wandering through the exhibits, soaking in the information and taking copious notes in my travel journal.
After the museum, I strolled through the Aguas Calientes Market. It was a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and smells. Local vendors hawked their wares, from handwoven textiles to intricate carvings and an array of souvenirs. I picked up a few small trinkets for Sofia, knowing she'd appreciate the vibrant colors and unique designs. I even bartered a bit, practicing my rusty Spanish and enjoying the friendly banter with the vendors. It's these small interactions that truly bring a place to life, offering a glimpse into the everyday lives of the people who call it home.

For lunch, I ventured into Full House Peruvian cuisine &craft beer, drawn in by the promise of authentic local flavors. I decided to try the trout ceviche, a regional specialty, and I must say, it was absolutely divine. The fish was incredibly fresh, marinated in lime juice and chili peppers, a perfect balance of citrus and spice. It was served with glazed sweet potato and sweet corn, adding a touch of sweetness to the savory dish. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, filled with laughter and lively conversation. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge after a morning of exploring.

As the afternoon wore on, I decided to take a leisurely stroll along the river, soaking in the scenery and enjoying the crisp mountain air. The weather in Aguas Calientes in October is mildly cool, with average highs around 19°C and lows around 8°C. There's also a high chance of rain. I was glad I had packed a light jacket and my hiking boots, ready for whatever the day might bring.
For dinner, I chose Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer, hoping to sample some local brews and more traditional Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant had a vibrant atmosphere and offered both indoor and outdoor seating. I opted for a table outside, wanting to enjoy the evening air and the sounds of the town. I ordered the Aji de Gallina, a creamy chicken stew with yellow chili peppers, and a glass of local craft beer. The food was delicious, and the beer was the perfect complement, a hoppy and refreshing brew that washed away the day's fatigue. The staff was friendly and attentive, eager to share their knowledge of the menu and recommend the best pairings.

As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement for what tomorrow holds. I'll be visiting the Temple of the Three Windows, Intimachay, and the House of the Guardian to the Funerary Rock at Machu Picchu. I plan to have breakfast at Govinda Restaurant VEGANO, lunch at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant, and dinner at Restaurante Tinkuy Buffet Restaurant at Sanctuary Lodge. Before I head back to my room, I may stop by Inka Happiness Cultural Bar.
Aguas Calientes has exceeded my expectations. It's a town brimming with life, a vibrant hub of culture and cuisine that serves as the perfect prelude to the wonders of Machu Picchu. I'm eager to continue my adventure tomorrow, to delve deeper into the history and mystery of this ancient site, and to share my experiences with all of you.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I'll turn in for the night. Tomorrow promises to be an early start, and I want to be well-rested and ready to explore. Until then, ¡hasta mañana!
