Solo Adventure to the Timeless Marvel of Machu Picchu
Day 2: Whispers of the Past: Unveiling Machu Picchu's Sacred Sites
Delve into Machu Picchu's spiritual heart: Temple of the Three Windows, Intimachay, and the Funerary Rock. An unforgettable solo journey!
Echoes of the Inca Civilization
Today, on the second day of my solo adventure to Machu Picchu, I immersed myself in the heart of this ancient citadel. My journey was a tapestry woven with history, spirituality, and the sheer awe of standing where the Inca civilization once thrived. October in Machu Picchu is proving to be a delightful experience, with mild temperatures during the day, though I am keeping my eye on the sky for the occasional afternoon shower.
My day began with a hearty vegan breakfast at Govinda Restaurant VEGANO. It's always a pleasure to find plant-based options while traveling, and this little gem fueled me up perfectly for a day of exploration.
The Temple of the Three Windows: A Portal to the Inca World
The first stop on my itinerary was the Temple of the Three Windows, an iconic structure that immediately captivated my imagination. Standing before those precisely carved walls, I felt an undeniable connection to the past. It is believed that the three windows represented the Inca's tripartite cosmology: the celestial world (Hanan Pacha), the earthly world (Kay Pacha), and the underworld (Uku Pacha). Each window, in essence, framed a different plane of existence, offering a glimpse into the Inca worldview.

Legend has it that Hiram Bingham believed these windows symbolized the place where the Incas originated. The temple itself is located in the 'Hanan' sector, the most important part of Machu Picchu, where significant religious ceremonies took place. It was incredible to imagine the rituals and ceremonies that once unfolded within these walls, connecting the Inca people to their gods and ancestors.
Machu Picchu is more than just stones and mortar; it's a living testament to the ingenuity, spirituality, and enduring legacy of the Inca civilization.
Intimachay: The House of the Sun
Next on my list was Intimachay, often referred to as the 'House of the Sun'. This sacred cave held immense historical and spiritual significance for the Inca civilization, serving as a site for rituals and ceremonies dedicated to the sun god, Inti. As I approached Intimachay, I was immediately struck by its natural beauty and mystical atmosphere. The cave's unique rock formations and the ethereal light filtering through created a serene environment that invited reflection and exploration.

It is believed that Intimachay was also used for astronomical observations, particularly tracking the winter and summer solstices. The Incas had a profound understanding of astronomy, and Intimachay served as a vital link between the earthly and celestial realms. I could almost feel the energy of the Inca priests as they studied the sun's path, ensuring cosmic harmony and guiding their agricultural practices.
House of the Guardian to the Funerary Rock: Honoring the Ancestors
My final stop of the day was the House of the Guardian to the Funerary Rock, a site that offered both stunning panoramic views and a glimpse into Inca funerary practices. The House of the Guardian, perched high above the citadel, is where you can capture that classic postcard photo of Machu Picchu. The simple structure, made of stone and adobe, was likely a lookout post, offering a complete view of Machu Picchu and its access points.

A few steps away lies the Funerary Rock, a carved stone believed to have been used as a ceremonial table where mummies were embalmed. It's a somber yet fascinating reminder of the Inca's reverence for their ancestors and their elaborate burial rituals. Standing there, I contemplated the cycle of life and death, and the enduring connection between the living and the departed.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant for a late lunch. I savored some local flavors and enjoyed a refreshing craft beer, reflecting on the incredible experiences of the day. For dinner, I decided to treat myself to the Restaurante Tinkuy Buffet Restaurant at Sanctuary Lodge. The buffet offered a wide variety of Peruvian and international dishes, and the quality of the food was exceptional. It was the perfect way to replenish my energy after a day of exploring.
In the evening, I ventured to the Inka Happiness Cultural Bar for a nightcap. The bar had a pleasant atmosphere, friendly staff, and a great selection of drinks. It was the perfect place to unwind and soak in the vibrant culture of Aguas Calientes.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Intipata, Winay Wayna, and the Sun Gate, continuing my journey through the wonders of Machu Picchu. I am particularly excited about visiting the Sun Gate, which promises breathtaking views and a deeper understanding of Inca astronomy.
Despite forgetting my portable phone charger and rain poncho, the day unfolded beautifully. Perhaps I will find a shop tomorrow, such as Quechua’s House - Coffee Bookshop, to purchase a poncho, as the weather in October can be unpredictable.
Machu Picchu continues to surprise and inspire me at every turn. I am eager to see what new wonders await me tomorrow. It's moments like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to explore, discover, and connect with the world on my own terms.
Embark on a solo journey to explore the ancient wonders of Machu Picchu, immersing in history and culture amidst the breathtaking Peruvian landscapes.
