Whispers of Tradition

Today was a day of vibrant colors and serene paths, a deep dive into the heart of Kyoto's traditional soul. From the mesmerizing vermilion gates of Fushimi Inari Taisha to the charming, historic streets of Sannenzaka, every moment felt like stepping back in time. It's days like these that remind me why I love exploring and sharing these experiences with my family and all of you.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Goichi Pizza. I know, I know – pizza in Kyoto? But sometimes, you just need a taste of home, or at least, something familiar. Wei was especially thrilled. It’s a cozy spot, and the pizza was surprisingly good, with a chewy crust that hit the spot before a day of exploring. Suitably fueled, we set off for Fushimi Inari Taisha.

The journey to Fushimi Inari was straightforward, and as we approached, the sight of the seemingly endless rows of vermilion torii gates snaking up the mountain was breathtaking. Even in January, the energy of the place was palpable. The crisp winter air added a certain clarity to the vibrant colors, making the shrine stand out even more vividly. Though I had forgotten my raincoat, the weather held up nicely, and we were able to enjoy the day without getting wet. Mei reminded me, not for the first time, that I should double-check my packing list. I'm usually so organized, but sometimes things slip through the cracks.

Walking through the seemingly endless tunnel of torii gates was an almost spiritual experience. Each gate, donated by a company or individual, is inscribed with their name, a testament to their devotion and gratitude. The sheer number of gates is staggering, and as you walk further up the mountain, the crowds thin out, allowing for moments of quiet contemplation.

The best journey always takes us home, in a way.

We didn't hike all the way to the summit, as Wei's little legs were getting tired, but we made it far enough to enjoy some stunning views of Kyoto sprawling below. It was a perfect opportunity for some family photos, capturing the moment against the backdrop of ancient tradition and natural beauty. I tried to explain to Wei the significance of the shrine, dedicated to Inari, the god of rice, but I think he was more interested in the numerous fox statues scattered around the grounds. Foxes are considered Inari's messengers, and they are everywhere, each with a unique expression and often holding a key in their mouths, symbolizing access to the rice granary.

After descending from Fushimi Inari, our next stop was Sannenzaka, a historic pedestrian street leading up to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The walk from the station was pleasant, and as we approached Sannenzaka, the atmosphere shifted noticeably. The narrow, stone-paved street was lined with traditional wooden buildings housing shops selling everything from local crafts to sweets and souvenirs. It felt like stepping into a movie set, a perfectly preserved slice of old Kyoto.

Sannenzaka was bustling with people, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to soak up the atmosphere. We strolled along, window shopping and occasionally popping into a store that caught our eye. I picked up a beautiful hand-painted fan for Mei, while Wei was delighted with a small wooden toy. The architecture along Sannenzaka is fascinating, a blend of styles reflecting different periods of Kyoto's history. Many of the buildings are traditional *kyo-machiya* townhouses, characterized by their wooden facades and tiled roofs. These buildings were designed to withstand Kyoto's climate, with features like paper sliding doors and mud walls that provide insulation and ventilation.

Lunch was at Katsukura - Kyoto Porta, a *tonkatsu* restaurant recommended by a friend back in Zurich. It was conveniently located and offered a welcome respite from the cold. The *tonkatsu* was excellent, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, served with all the traditional accompaniments. Wei especially enjoyed grinding his own sesame seeds to mix into the *tonkatsu* sauce.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at Gion Nanba. Nestled in the heart of Gion, finding it was an adventure in itself, tucked away in a narrow alley just off the main street. This Michelin-starred *kaiseki* restaurant promised an authentic taste of Kyoto's culinary heritage, and it certainly delivered. The meal was a work of art, each course beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. It was an experience that engaged all the senses, a true celebration of Japanese cuisine. The chef clearly highlighted the natural *umami* of each ingredient and avoided overpowering sauces.

After dinner, while Mei and Wei headed back to the hotel, I ventured out for a nightcap at L'Escamoteur, a cocktail bar known for its unique atmosphere and creative drinks. The bar is run by a magician named Christophe Rossi, and it's unlike anything I've ever experienced. The interior is a quirky mix of vintage furniture, apothecary bottles, and magical paraphernalia, creating a sense of stepping into another world. The cocktails are equally inventive, each one a work of art in itself. I tried the Kyoto Garden, a gin-based concoction with matcha and yuzu, a perfect blend of local flavors and mixology magic. L'Escamoteur is more than just a bar; it's an experience, a place where you can escape the ordinary and indulge in a little bit of fantasy.

Before heading back to Hotel Rings Kyoto, I took a moment to walk along the Kamo River, the city lights reflecting in the dark water. The air was crisp and still, and the only sound was the gentle murmur of the river. It was a perfect end to a perfect day, a reminder of the beauty and tranquility that Kyoto offers.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Kiyomizu-dera and explore Gion, so stay tuned for more adventures! I'm particularly excited to see Kiyomizu-dera, as I've heard the views from the temple are spectacular. We'll also be doing some shopping at the Daimaru Kyoto Store, so I'm sure Wei will be thrilled. I'm also looking forward to trying some new restaurants, including The Cellar Kyoto for breakfast, Komefuku for lunch, and Kikunoi Roan for dinner. It promises to be another day filled with culture, history, and culinary delights.

As I reflect on today’s journey, I’m reminded of the importance of embracing the unexpected. While I meticulously plan our itinerary, it’s often the unplanned moments that become the most cherished memories. Whether it was the unexpected pizza at Goichi, the serendipitous discovery of Gion Nanba, or the magical cocktails at L'Escamoteur, each experience added a unique layer to our understanding of Kyoto. It’s these moments that transform a simple trip into a profound journey of discovery.

And so, as I sign off for the night, I encourage you to embrace the spirit of adventure and seek out those hidden gems that await you on your own travels. For it is in these unexpected encounters that we truly discover the soul of a place.
