A Solo Journey Through Morocco's Dades Valley
Day 9: Lost in the Majesty of Dadès: A Day of Gorges, Valleys, and Berber Hospitality
Immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscapes of Dadès Valley, exploring gorges, valleys, and experiencing the warmth of Berber culture.
A Valley of Wonders
Today was a day of pure, unadulterated awe. From the moment I woke up, I knew it would be special. The Dadès Valley, with its dramatic gorges and vibrant culture, has completely captured my heart. I ventured deeper into its embrace, eager to uncover more of its hidden gems.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant ANBD. The simple pleasures of warm bread, local honey, and strong coffee set against the backdrop of the rising sun over the valley was the perfect way to start the day. I savored every bite, knowing that I needed the energy for the adventures that lay ahead. The crisp morning air hinted at the winter chill, a stark contrast to the warm hospitality I've consistently encountered here in Morocco. As I ate, I planned my route for the day, excitement bubbling within me. I had a full itinerary to follow today, as every day of this trip has been carefully planned to maximize my time here.
First on the agenda was exploring the famed Gorges Dadès. As I drove, the landscape transformed into a geological wonderland. Towering cliffs of red and ochre soared on either side, the road winding like a ribbon through the heart of the canyon. I stopped frequently, camera in hand, attempting to capture the sheer scale and grandeur of the place. The sunlight played tricks on the rocks, creating a kaleidoscope of colors that shifted with every passing hour. It was a photographer's dream, and I was in heaven. I thought of Lin back home, and how her eyes would widen at this sight. I made a mental note to show her all the photos when I get back; maybe one day I'll bring my family here to experience this place.

I continued my journey through the Dadès Vallei, marveling at the contrast between the rugged gorges and the lush green pockets of life that clung to the valley floor. Palm trees swayed gently in the breeze, and the fields were a patchwork of vibrant crops. It was a testament to the resilience of life in this harsh environment. I even spotted some almond trees, reminding me of our orchard back in Kelowna. It's amazing how nature finds a way to thrive, no matter the circumstances.
Around midday, hunger began to gnaw, and I found myself at Restaurant Dar Ahlam Dades. The reviews online promised a delightful culinary experience, and they did not disappoint. The restaurant was beautiful, and the food was incredible. I decided to try a traditional tagine, and it was bursting with flavor. The tender meat, aromatic spices, and sweet vegetables were a symphony of taste that danced on my tongue. As I ate, I reflected on the journey so far. Morocco has been a feast for the senses, and the Dadès Valley was proving to be one of its most exquisite courses. I thought of Mei-Ling and how she would have loved to try this tagine. She always appreciates a good meal, especially when it's prepared with such care and attention to detail.

The Dadès Valley is a reminder that even in the most remote corners of the world, beauty, resilience, and hospitality can flourish.
After lunch, I decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at SAFOUASHOP. I wasn't necessarily looking for anything in particular, but I wanted to support the local economy and perhaps find a unique souvenir to take back home. The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts, from intricately woven carpets to handmade jewelry. I ended up buying a small, hand-carved wooden box, perfect for storing keepsakes. I imagined Lin using it to store her little trinkets. It felt good to know that my purchase was helping to support a local artisan and their family.

As the afternoon wore on, I made my way to Riad Dades Birds. While I didn't stay there, I heard it was a great place to see birds and enjoy the scenery. Birdwatching isn't usually my thing, but I figured I'd give it a try. I wasn't disappointed. The riad was beautiful, and the surrounding area was teeming with birdlife. I saw several species I'd never seen before, their colorful plumage a vibrant contrast to the earthy tones of the landscape. It was a peaceful and calming experience, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the day. I even managed to snap a few decent photos, which I'm sure Lin would appreciate. She has always had a soft spot for birds, ever since she was a little girl.

Finally, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, I settled in for dinner at kasbah Amlal. The kasbah itself was stunning, an ancient fortress that had been lovingly restored. The atmosphere was magical, with lanterns casting a warm glow on the stone walls and traditional music filling the air. The food was delicious, a feast of Moroccan specialties that left me feeling full and content. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel like a guest in their home. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. I enjoyed the traditional music, something I would never experience back home. I was also able to speak with some of the locals, asking them about their history and what their lives were like in the valley.

As I sit here now, writing this entry, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I've had today. The Dadès Valley has exceeded all my expectations. It is a place of breathtaking beauty, rich culture, and warm hospitality. It has reminded me of the importance of connecting with nature, embracing new experiences, and appreciating the simple things in life. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, my last day in this magical place. I plan to visit Entrée du canyon, Morocco Exposure, and Dar Essalama. I also plan to grab a drink at Night Club before I leave, to cap off this incredible journey. It's hard to believe that this adventure is coming to an end. I will have to fly back to Kelowna soon, back to Mei-Ling and Lin, and back to the orchard. I miss them dearly, but I know that this trip has made me a better person. I will carry the memories of the Dadès Valley with me forever, and I hope to return someday soon.
The winter chill is definitely setting in, but the warmth of the people here keeps my spirits high. The lack of sunscreen and a local SIM card, my forgotten essentials, haven't hampered my experience too much. I've managed to navigate the days with a combination of resourcefulness and the kindness of strangers. It's these little challenges that often make a trip all the more memorable. This journey through the Dadès Valley has been more than just a sightseeing tour; it's been a profound immersion into a world so different from my own, and I'm immensely grateful for every moment.
Tomorrow marks the final day of my Moroccan adventure, and while I'm eager to return home to my family, a part of me will forever remain in this enchanting valley. The Entrée du canyon, Morocco Exposure, and Dar Essalama await, promising a fitting farewell to this captivating landscape. And perhaps, a final toast at the Night Club, a celebration of the memories forged and the lessons learned. Until then, I'll cherish the quiet solitude of this Berber night, the stars whispering tales of ancient caravans and timeless traditions. This trip has been a truly unforgettable experience, and I know that I will carry the memories of the Dadès Valley with me for the rest of my life.
