A Day of Discovery in Kyoto
Today was a whirlwind of cultural immersion, a day packed with ancient shrines, cinematic adventures, and the delightful taste of sake. It’s amazing how much history and artistry can be packed into a single day here in Kyoto. The blend of the old and the new, the spiritual and the playful, has created memories that I know our family will cherish.
Our day began with an early start to beat the crowds at the famed Fushimi Inari Shrine (Thousand Torii Gates). Even in January, there's a special atmosphere with people visiting the shrine to pray for good fortune in the new year. The crisp morning air nipped at our faces as we approached the seemingly endless path of vermilion torii gates. I was eager to show Lin the iconic tunnels, a symbol of Japan that has always captivated me. The steady climb was invigorating, and the higher we went, the fewer people we encountered. It felt like we were discovering a secret world with each step.
The thousands of torii gates winding up the mountain were an absolutely breathtaking sight. Each gate, donated by individuals and companies, is inscribed with their names, a testament to their devotion and gratitude. The sheer scale of the shrine is humbling, and the vibrant red color against the backdrop of the forest created a mesmerizing contrast. Lin was fascinated by the fox statues, messengers of the deity Inari, and peppered me with questions about their significance.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of a bustling world.
For breakfast, we had planned to visit Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi, but we were too early and the restaurant was closed. So we grabbed a quick bite near Fushimi Inari before heading to our next destination: Toei Kyoto Studio Park. I had heard mixed reviews, but I was intrigued by the idea of stepping into a real-life movie set. And Lin, of course, was thrilled at the prospect of seeing ninjas and samurai.

Toei Kyoto Studio Park turned out to be a delightful surprise. It's not just a film set; it's a fully immersive experience. We wandered through meticulously recreated Edo-period streets, peeking into shops and houses that looked straight out of a historical drama. We even caught a glimpse of an actual filming taking place, which was fascinating to watch. Lin was completely captivated by the ninja show, with its impressive acrobatics and sword fights. I must admit, I enjoyed it too!
The park offered a fun, albeit slightly surreal, glimpse into the world of Japanese filmmaking. It was interesting to see how these historical dramas are brought to life and the attention to detail that goes into creating an authentic atmosphere. Lin even got to try on a samurai costume and pose for photos, much to her delight. It was a lighthearted and entertaining break from the more serious cultural sites we had visited.
After our cinematic adventure, we sought a more contemplative experience at Tōfuku-ji Temple. Known for its stunning Zen gardens and autumn foliage, I knew it would offer a serene escape from the bustling city. Although January isn't the peak season for colors, the temple still exuded a sense of tranquility and beauty.

The gardens at Tōfuku-ji were a masterpiece of minimalist design. The carefully raked gravel, the strategically placed rocks, and the meticulously pruned trees created a sense of harmony and balance. I found myself drawn into a meditative state, contemplating the simple beauty of the landscape. Lin, surprisingly, was also captivated by the gardens, perhaps sensing the peaceful energy that permeated the air.
Our final temple visit of the day was to Kodaiji Temple. This temple, built in memory of Toyotomi Hideyoshi by his wife Nene, offered a glimpse into the lavish style of the era. Although some of the buildings had been rebuilt after fires, they still retained an air of elegance and grandeur. The gardens here were also stunning, with a mix of rock gardens and traditional strolling gardens.

Kodaiji Temple was particularly beautiful as the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the landscape. The bamboo grove, a serene path leading back to the temple buildings, was especially enchanting. It felt like we were walking through a living painting, surrounded by the gentle rustling of bamboo leaves. I could imagine Nene walking these same paths centuries ago, finding solace and peace in this tranquil sanctuary.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Fushimi Sake Village for a well-deserved tasting. After a day of temples and studios, a taste of local sake seemed like the perfect way to unwind. The village is a collection of sake breweries, each offering a unique selection of their finest brews. I was excited to sample some of the local varieties and learn more about the sake-making process.

Fushimi Sake Village was a delightful sensory experience. We sampled a variety of sakes, each with its own distinct flavor profile. From the crisp and dry to the sweet and fruity, there was something to please every palate. I particularly enjoyed the *junmai daiginjo*, a premium sake made with highly polished rice. We also tried some sake-infused snacks, which were a surprisingly delicious complement to the drinks. Lin, of course, stuck to the snacks, but she enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the village.
For dinner, we indulged in a teppanyaki experience at Premium Pound Gion. The restaurant is known for its high-quality Japanese beef, cooked right in front of you on a sizzling iron griddle. It was a feast for the senses, watching the chef expertly prepare our meal with precision and flair. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, and the accompanying vegetables were perfectly cooked. It was a truly memorable dining experience.

After dinner, Mei-Ling and I decided to sneak away for a nightcap at L'Escamoteur, a bar known for its creative cocktails and cozy atmosphere. Finding the entrance was a bit of an adventure in itself, tucked away in a narrow alley. The Harry Potter-like vibe of the bar was immediately apparent, with its dimly lit interiors and vintage décor. The bartenders were true mixologists, crafting magical concoctions with a touch of showmanship.
