Kyoto's Imperial Grandeur and Natural Beauty
Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the serene beauty and rich history of Kyoto. It's amazing how much this city offers, from grand palaces to tranquil gardens, each corner whispering tales of emperors and philosophers. Mei-Ling and Lin were just as excited as I was to delve into the heart of Japan's cultural past.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Nakamura. I always appreciate a good start to the day, and this place was a gem. I opted for the traditional Japanese breakfast, a delightful array of small dishes that energized me for the day ahead. Lin, of course, went for something a bit more familiar – toast with jam – while Mei-Ling enjoyed a vegan option that looked incredibly fresh and vibrant. It's wonderful how Kyoto caters to every taste, a testament to its blend of tradition and modernity.

First on our itinerary was the Kyoto Imperial Palace. As we approached, the sheer scale of the grounds was impressive. The palace, once home to Japan's imperial family for over a thousand years, exudes a sense of history and grandeur. I couldn't help but imagine the emperors who once walked these halls, making decisions that shaped the nation. The architecture, rebuilt in 1855 after a fire, showcases elements from various periods, a tangible representation of Kyoto's enduring legacy.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its historical landmarks, but in the serene spaces where one can reflect and connect with nature.
We explored the Shishinden Hall, where enthronement ceremonies were once held, and wandered through the gardens, admiring the meticulously manicured landscapes. Lin was particularly fascinated by the stone lanterns in the Inner Garden, each one a unique piece of art. Mei-Ling, ever the photographer, captured the beauty of the Pond Garden, where the water reflected the clear winter sky.
Adjacent to the palace, we ventured into the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. In January, the plum blossom season is just beginning, and we were fortunate to see a few early bloomers. The garden, a vast green space surrounding the palace, provided a welcome respite from the city's hustle and bustle. It's hard to believe that this tranquil park was once home to the residences of court nobles. Now, it's a place where locals and tourists alike can stroll, jog, and simply enjoy the beauty of nature.

Next, we made our way to the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. Though it's winter, the gardens still held a certain charm. The conservatory was a highlight, housing plants from various climates around the world. It was fascinating to see tropical plants thriving in the middle of Kyoto. Lin was particularly excited by the carnivorous plants, while Mei-Ling was drawn to the orchids, their delicate beauty a stark contrast to the winter landscape outside. I found myself enjoying the Japanese garden, a serene space with meticulously placed stones and carefully pruned trees.

For lunch, we stopped at Komefuku, a local spot known for its tempura. The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign. We ordered a variety of tempura dishes, from classic prawn to more adventurous vegetable options. The batter was light and crispy, the ingredients fresh and flavorful. It was a satisfying and delicious meal, a perfect example of Kyoto's culinary excellence.

In the afternoon, we embarked on a journey along the Philosopher's Path. This stone path, following a canal lined with cherry trees, is named after a famous philosopher who used to walk here for daily meditation. In winter, the path takes on a different kind of beauty. The bare trees and quiet atmosphere create a sense of tranquility, perfect for contemplation. As we strolled along the path, I couldn't help but reflect on my own life, my journey from Taiwan to Canada, and now this adventure in Japan.

Lin, ever curious, peppered me with questions about the philosopher and the history of the path. Mei-Ling, meanwhile, enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, taking photos of the canal and the surrounding scenery. We passed several small temples and shrines along the way, each one a testament to Kyoto's spiritual heritage. Though the cherry blossoms were still months away, I could imagine how beautiful this path would be in spring.
As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Teppan Tavern Tenamonya. This teppanyaki restaurant, run by a husband and wife team, is known for its friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Unfortunately, it seems they no longer cater to vegetarians, so Mei-Ling's options were limited, but Lin and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Watching the chef cook our meal on the iron griddle was a spectacle in itself. The wagyu steak was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful. It was a delightful end to a long and fulfilling day.

Finally, before heading back to the Travelodge Kyoto Shijo Kawaramachi, we stopped by Kyoto Star Bar for a nightcap. The bar had a sophisticated atmosphere, with a kimono-clad bartender crafting exquisite cocktails. I opted for a classic whisky highball, while Mei-Ling tried a local sake. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Heian Shrine, Eikan-dō Temple, Nanzen-ji Temple, and Maruyama Park. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the Heian Shrine, with its distinctive architecture and beautiful gardens. It promises to be another day of cultural immersion and exploration. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at the Daimaru Kyoto Store.
As I reflect on today, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto with my family. It's a city that truly captivates the senses, offering a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that is unlike any other. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, and to continue sharing our adventures with you all.
The weather today was chilly, with a high of 9°C (48°F) and a low of 1°C (34°F) [referenced from weather in Kyoto in January]. It was mostly clear, with a slight breeze. I was glad I had packed warm clothing, including a winter coat, fleece, and gloves. The sun set around 5:00 PM, and the evenings were quite cold. We saw some Christmas-themed lights and decorations in the city, which added to the festive atmosphere. It seems that light-up events are common in Kyoto during December and January.
Before drifting off to sleep, I brewed myself a cup of Taiwanese tea, a comforting ritual that always reminds me of home. As I sipped the warm tea, I thought about the philosopher who used to walk the path we explored today, seeking enlightenment in the quiet beauty of Kyoto. I may not be a philosopher, but I, too, find solace and inspiration in this ancient city. Goodnight from Kyoto!
