Solo Cultural Immersion in Chefchaouen's Blue Wonderland
Day 2: Chasing Waterfalls and Sunset Dreams in Chefchaouen
Discover Chefchaouen's natural beauty at Ras El Ma, panoramic views from City View Point, and a magical sunset at a local bar.
A Day of Discoveries in the Blue City
Today was all about embracing the natural beauty and serene vibes of Chefchaouen, a welcome contrast to the bustling city life I'm used to back in Markham. It's amazing how a change of scenery can bring a fresh perspective. I set out to explore beyond the iconic blue walls, seeking out the hidden gems that this Moroccan town has to offer.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Chez Aziz. I had heard so much about their traditional Moroccan breakfast, and it did not disappoint! It was the perfect way to fuel up before heading out for a day of exploration. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the atmosphere was buzzing with locals and tourists alike.
Ras El Ma: A Refreshing Start
My first stop was Ras El Ma, a natural spring and waterfall located just outside the northeastern gate of the medina. The walk there was lovely, passing through the winding blue alleyways before emerging into a more rugged landscape. The sound of the water grew louder as I approached, and the sight of the spring was truly refreshing.

Local women were doing their laundry in the cool water, and children were playing nearby. It was a slice of everyday Moroccan life, far removed from the touristy hustle within the medina walls. I took some time to simply sit by the water, enjoying the tranquility and the gentle sound of the falls. The water was so clear and cool; it was tempting to dip my feet in, but I resisted! I did, however, splash some on my face – instant refreshment!
I explored the small trails around Ras El Ma, taking in the views of the surrounding Rif Mountains. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the city. It was easy to see why this spot is so beloved by locals and visitors alike. It’s a place where you can connect with nature and escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.
The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not only in its blue walls but also in the natural springs and panoramic vistas that surround it.
Lunch at Sofia: A Taste of Local Flavors
After my refreshing visit to Ras El Ma, I was ready for lunch. I decided to try Sofia, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. It was a bit hidden away from the main streets, which added to its charm. I ordered the tagine with vegetables, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the skill of the chef. The staff were also incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home.

While enjoying my tagine, I couldn’t help but reflect on how different this experience was from my usual lunch breaks back in Markham. Instead of a quick sandwich at my desk, I was savoring a flavorful Moroccan dish in a cozy restaurant, surrounded by the sounds of a foreign language and the scent of exotic spices. These are the moments that make travel so enriching.
City View Point: A Panoramic Perspective
With my belly full and my spirit refreshed, I set off to find the City View Point. I was eager to see Chefchaouen from above, to get a sense of the layout of the town and the surrounding landscape. The walk to the viewpoint was a bit of a climb, but the views along the way were more than worth it. As I ascended, the blue buildings of Chefchaouen spread out before me, a breathtaking sight. The Rif Mountains loomed in the distance, adding to the drama of the scene.

When I finally reached the City View Point, I was awestruck. The entire town was laid out before me, a sea of blue against the backdrop of the mountains. I could see the Kasbah, the Grand Mosque, and the winding alleyways of the medina. It was the perfect spot to take photos and simply soak in the beauty of Chefchaouen. I spent a good hour at the viewpoint, watching as the sun began to dip towards the horizon. The light transformed the town, casting long shadows and painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. It was a truly magical experience.
Many people recommend hiking up to the Spanish Mosque for sunset views, but I was happy with my choice of the City View Point. It was less crowded, and the views were just as stunning. Plus, I saved myself the extra hike!
Sunset at Sunset: A Perfect Ending
As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to a drink at Sunset at Sunset, a bar known for its captivating views and relaxing ambiance. The bar was perfectly positioned to offer guests a front-row seat to the sunset.

It was a reminder of the connections that travel can create, bringing people together from all corners of the world.
The bar served a variety of beverages, including refreshing cocktails and local drinks, which you can sip while taking in the stunning views. The surrounding area is rich in culture and history, and a visit to the bar can easily be combined with an exploration of Chefchaouen's picturesque streets, where every corner offers a new photo opportunity. As you sit back and enjoy your drink, take a moment to appreciate the unique charm of Chefchaouen, with its friendly locals and vibrant art scene.
Dinner at Restaurant Terrasse Djebli: A Culinary Culmination
For my final meal of the day, I chose Restaurant Terrasse Djebli. I had heard it offered a delightful culinary experience with a beautiful view. The restaurant was easy to find, and I was immediately drawn in by the inviting atmosphere.

I opted for a traditional Moroccan stew, and it was a fantastic choice. The spices were perfectly balanced, and the meat was tender and flavorful. The terrace offered a stunning view of the city, making the dining experience even more special. The staff were attentive and friendly, adding to the overall positive experience.
As I savored each bite, I reflected on the day’s adventures. From the refreshing waterfalls of Ras El Ma to the panoramic views from City View Point and the magical sunset at Sunset at Sunset, it had been a day filled with beauty and discovery. Chefchaouen had truly captured my heart.
Looking Ahead
Tomorrow, I plan to immerse myself further in the cultural heart of Chefchaouen by visiting Plaza Uta el Hamman and perhaps venture out to Akchour. I'm also looking forward to doing some shopping at Blue. concept store and trying out the breakfast at Hôtel restaurant La fuente. Each day here reveals a new layer of charm, and I'm excited to uncover more of what this blue city has to offer. I might even try my hand at online bingo later tonight, a little piece of home away from home.
Before heading back to my hotel, I took one last look at the starlit sky above Chefchaouen. The stars seemed brighter here, untainted by the light pollution of the city. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
This trip is not just a break from my routine; it's a chance to see the world through a different lens, to appreciate the beauty and diversity of our planet. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up a few new recipes to try out in my own kitchen back in Markham. Until tomorrow, Chefchaouen!
