Into the Blue Heart of Chefchaouen
Today was a day of embracing the full spectrum of Chefchaouen, from its bustling heart to the serene heights of the Rif Mountains. It's amazing how a single city can offer such diverse experiences. I woke up eager to dive deeper into the blue pearl, and today’s itinerary promised just that—a blend of cultural immersion and natural beauty.
My day started with a hearty breakfast at Hôtel restaurant La fuente. The Beef Tajine was delicious and gave me the energy I needed for the day ahead. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home. Fully energized, I set out to explore Plaza Uta el-Hamman.

Wandering Through Plaza Uta el-Hamman
Plaza Uta el-Hamman is the bustling heart of Chefchaouen, and it truly lives up to its reputation. The square is lined with cafes and restaurants, each offering a tempting array of Moroccan dishes. I spent a good hour simply soaking in the atmosphere, watching locals and tourists alike mingle and enjoy the morning sun. The Grand Mosque stands proudly on one side of the square, its minaret adding to the already picturesque scene.
I found myself drawn to the artisan shops surrounding the plaza, each filled with handcrafted goods and souvenirs. The vibrant colors of the textiles and the intricate designs of the ceramics were mesmerizing. I picked up a few small trinkets as gifts for Aisha and Umar, knowing they would appreciate the unique craftsmanship.
The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the vibrant life that unfolds within them.
Before leaving the plaza, I couldn't resist stopping for a refreshing mint tea at one of the cafes. Sipping the sweet, fragrant tea while watching the world go by was the perfect way to appreciate the charm of this blue city.
A Hike to Remember: Akchour Waterfalls
After immersing myself in the heart of Chefchaouen, it was time to venture into the Rif Mountains and experience the natural beauty of Akchour.
Discover the serene beauty of Akchour, Morocco, where breathtaking waterfalls and lush landscapes await your exploration.
The hike to Akchour is renowned for its stunning waterfalls and natural rock formations, and I was eager to see it for myself. The bus ride from Chefchaouen to Akchour was an adventure in itself, winding through the scenic mountain roads.
The trailhead was buzzing with activity, as locals and tourists prepared for their hikes. I took a moment to stretch and mentally prepare myself for the trek ahead. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the bustling city.
The hike itself was moderately challenging, with some rocky sections and steep inclines. However, the breathtaking views made every step worthwhile. The trail followed the river, and the sound of rushing water was a constant companion. The landscape was lush and green, a stark contrast to the blue hues of Chefchaouen.
Along the way, I encountered several small restaurants and cafes, offering refreshments and traditional Moroccan dishes. I stopped at one for a freshly squeezed orange juice, which was incredibly refreshing. The locals were friendly and welcoming, offering encouragement and sharing stories about the area.
As I continued my hike, I reached the first waterfall, a stunning cascade of water falling into a turquoise pool. The sight was truly breathtaking, and I took some time to simply admire the beauty of nature. Some hikers were brave enough to take a dip in the icy cold water, but I decided to admire from afar.
I pressed on towards the main waterfall, which was even more impressive. The water plunged down from a great height, creating a misty spray that cooled the air. I spent a good hour exploring the area, taking photos and soaking in the serene atmosphere.
The hike back down was just as enjoyable, with new perspectives and angles to appreciate the scenery. By the time I reached the trailhead, I was tired but exhilarated, feeling a deep sense of accomplishment and connection with nature.
A Culinary Evening
Back in Chefchaouen, my stomach was rumbling, and I was ready for a delicious dinner. I decided to try Restaurant Ali Baba, which I had heard offered a great selection of Moroccan dishes.

I decided to treat myself to pizza, and it was the perfect way to end a long and fulfilling day. As I savored each bite, I reflected on the incredible experiences I had today, from the bustling Plaza Uta el-Hamman to the serene Akchour waterfalls.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of the natural wonders surrounding Chefchaouen, with a visit to Parc National de Talassemtane and the Waterfalls Akchour. I am also looking forward to unwinding at Bar Oum Rabie [Day 4 Itinerary]. For now, I am grateful for the memories made today and excited for what tomorrow holds.

It’s a place where you can lose yourself in the maze of blue streets, discover hidden gems around every corner, and connect with the warmth and hospitality of the locals. It reminds me a little of Wamba, but with a distinct Moroccan flair. This solo trip is exactly what I needed to recharge and find inspiration. Perhaps I’ll even try to replicate some of these blue hues in my own garden back in Markham. For now, I’ll savor every moment here and continue to share my journey with you all.
