A Final Day in Blue

As my Moroccan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the past ten days, especially my time here in Chefchaouen. This enchanting blue city has captured my heart with its winding alleyways, vibrant culture, and the warmth of its people. Today, my final day, was a bittersweet symphony of exploration and farewells.

My morning began, as many of my mornings here have, with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant populaire. The simple pleasure of Moroccan pancakes and mint tea has become a cherished ritual. It's funny how the little things become so significant when you're traveling solo. I savored each bite, knowing I would soon be back in Markham, missing these authentic flavors. Aisha would have loved these pancakes; I must try to recreate them for her when I get home.

With a full stomach and a heart full of memories, I set out to explore the Callejón de Sidi Bouchouka, a narrow, winding alleyway known for its stunning blue hues and hidden corners. I wanted to capture a few last photos, to etch the image of this magical place in my memory. It was early, and the alley was relatively quiet, allowing me to wander at my own pace, camera in hand. I found a small, unassuming doorway bathed in the soft morning light and spent a good while trying to capture its essence. It's these quiet moments of observation that I truly treasure.

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.

Next on my list was Place Moulay El Mehdi, a bustling square that serves as the heart of Chefchaouen. The square was already alive with activity, locals going about their daily routines, children playing, and the air filled with the aroma of spices and freshly brewed coffee. I found a spot on a bench and simply watched the world go by. It’s fascinating to observe the rhythm of life in a place so different from my own. I imagined Umar sitting beside me, sketching the scene in his notebook, capturing the essence of the square with his artistic eye. He would have loved the vibrant energy of this place.

For lunch, I ventured to Restaurant Hajji, one of the oldest restaurants in Chefchaouen, known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. I decided to try their famous tagine, a slow-cooked stew with meat, vegetables, and aromatic spices. It was absolutely divine! The flavors were rich and complex, and the meat was so tender it practically melted in my mouth. The friendly staff and cozy atmosphere made the experience even more enjoyable. It felt like stepping back in time, savoring a meal that has been prepared in the same way for generations.

After lunch, I indulged in a bit of retail therapy at CHAOUEN GIFTS. I picked up a few small souvenirs for Aisha and Umar—a hand-painted ceramic bowl for Aisha and a leather wallet for Umar. I always try to find something that reflects the local culture and reminds them of my travels. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I love the idea of bringing a piece of Chefchaouen back home with me.

As the day wore on, I found myself drawn back to the quieter corners of the medina. I wandered through the labyrinthine streets, admiring the intricate tilework, the vibrant colors, and the charming details that make Chefchaouen so unique. I stumbled upon a hidden courtyard filled with potted plants and the gentle sound of a fountain. It was a peaceful oasis, a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the town.

For my final dinner in Chefchaouen, I chose MIDO'S, a small restaurant known for its delicious and affordable food. I had heard great things about their falafel and decided to give it a try. It was absolutely amazing! Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and bursting with flavor. The owner was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home. It was the perfect way to end my culinary journey in Chefchaouen.

As I sit here in my hotel room at Hotel Barcelona, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia. Tomorrow, I will be heading to Tangier to catch my flight back to Toronto. While I am excited to see Umar and Aisha again, a part of me will always remain in this magical blue city. I am bringing back not only souvenirs but also memories, inspiration, and a renewed appreciation for the beauty and diversity of our world.

I am already planning my next adventure, perhaps a family trip to Nigeria to reconnect with my roots. But for now, I will cherish the memories of my solo journey in Chefchaouen, a blue hue goodbye to a truly unforgettable experience. I'll be sure to share all the photos and stories with my online bingo group; they're always eager to hear about my travels.

As I prepare to leave, I reflect on the lessons this journey has taught me. Traveling solo has pushed me out of my comfort zone, forced me to rely on my own instincts, and opened my eyes to new perspectives. I have learned to embrace the unexpected, to find joy in the simple things, and to appreciate the kindness of strangers. These are lessons I will carry with me long after I have left the blue streets of Chefchaouen behind.

Thank you, Chefchaouen, for the memories, the inspiration, and the blue hue goodbye. Until we meet again...

Final Thoughts

As my time in Chefchaouen comes to an end, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment, of having successfully navigated a new culture and embraced the unknown. There's also a hint of sadness, of leaving behind a place that has captured my heart with its unique charm and beauty. But most of all, there's a feeling of gratitude. I am grateful for the opportunity to have experienced this magical city, to have met its warm and welcoming people, and to have created memories that will last a lifetime.

This solo trip has been a journey of self-discovery, a chance to reconnect with myself and to explore my own passions and interests. It has reminded me of the importance of stepping outside of my comfort zone, of embracing new experiences, and of finding joy in the simple things. These are lessons that I will carry with me long after I have left Chefchaouen behind.

I am also grateful for the support of my family, especially Umar, who encouraged me to take this trip and who has always been my biggest cheerleader. I know that he and Aisha are eagerly awaiting my return, and I can't wait to share my stories and photos with them. Perhaps one day, we will all come back to Chefchaouen together and experience its magic as a family.

But for now, it's time to say goodbye. Goodbye to the blue streets, goodbye to the friendly faces, goodbye to the delicious food. Goodbye to Chefchaouen, a place that will forever hold a special place in my heart. Until we meet again...

Looking ahead, I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. I am eager to put my newfound inspiration and experiences to good use, whether it's through my blog, my cooking, or my interactions with others. I am also committed to continuing to explore the world, to learn about different cultures, and to share my stories with others.

The world is a vast and beautiful place, filled with endless opportunities for adventure and discovery. And I, for one, am determined to make the most of it.

So, as I close this chapter of my Moroccan adventure, I want to thank you, my readers, for joining me on this journey. Your support and encouragement mean the world to me, and I hope that my stories have inspired you to pursue your own dreams and to explore the world with an open heart and mind.

Until next time, happy travels!
