A Day Dipped in Blue

Today in Chefchaouen was like stepping into a dream, or perhaps a painting come to life. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of spices and the faint echo of Berber music. The blue hues that blanket this town are even more magical in person, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and wonder. I was eager to explore more of what Chefchaouen had to offer, and today's itinerary promised just that.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Traditional kitchen. The cozy atmosphere was the perfect start, and I savored every bite of the traditional Moroccan fare. It's amazing how food can be such a direct link to a culture, and this meal definitely set the tone for a day of cultural immersion.

Fuelled and ready, I made my way to the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen. Nestled within the Kasbah, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the region's history and traditions. As someone who loves learning about different cultures, I was captivated by the exhibits showcasing traditional clothing, tools, and artifacts. It was truly a journey through time, illustrating the diverse influences that have shaped Chefchaouen and the Rif region.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not only in its striking blue facade but also in the warmth and richness of its cultural heart.

Wandering through the museum, I was particularly drawn to the displays about Berber life, their intricate craftsmanship, and their deep connection to the land. The museum beautifully showcased the art of plaster carving, a technique I had admired in historic buildings during my travels in Morocco and Moorish Spain. It was fascinating to see the tools and templates used in this craft, and to learn about the steps involved in creating these intricate designs.

Leaving the museum, I found myself drawn to Place El Haouta, a picturesque square that seemed to pulse with the life of the town. The square was alive with activity, locals chatting, children playing, and the gentle sound of the fountain in the center. I sat for a while, simply soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the blue-tiled buildings that framed the square. The architecture, with its classic arches and iron grills, was simply captivating. It was the perfect spot to unwind and observe the daily rhythm of Chefchaouen.

Lunch was at Restaurant Dar El Salam, a charming eatery known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. I decided to try their tagine, and it was absolutely divine. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant itself was beautifully decorated, creating a cozy and inviting space. The staff were incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home.

After lunch, I couldn't resist the urge to do some shopping. I stumbled upon Jabir shop chefchaouen, a treasure trove of local crafts and souvenirs. The shop was filled with vibrant textiles, intricate ceramics, and handmade jewelry. I spent a good hour browsing through the items, chatting with the owner, and learning about the stories behind the crafts. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-woven scarf, a perfect memento of my time in Chefchaouen.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Chez Hicham for dinner. The restaurant boasted amazing rooftop views, offering a stunning panorama of the blue city bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. I savored a delicious Moroccan meal, enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and the breathtaking scenery.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to venture a bit outside the city center and explore the Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. A hike in nature will be a welcome contrast to the bustling medina, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of the natural beauty that surrounds Chefchaouen. I'm also hoping to stroll down Boulevard Mohamed V, soaking in the local atmosphere. And perhaps I'll end the day with a relaxing evening at Cafe Clock.

Before heading back to Hotel Barcelona, I took a moment to reflect on the day. Chefchaouen had truly captured my heart with its beauty, culture, and warm hospitality. It's a place that invites you to slow down, to wander, and to simply be present in the moment. It's a place that I know I'll never forget.

I thought about Umar and Aisha, and how much they would have loved experiencing this with me. Aisha would have been fascinated by the blue streets, and Umar would have appreciated the rich history and culture. Next time, I will bring them along.

As I walked back to my hotel, I couldn't help but smile, already looking forward to what tomorrow would bring.

Chefchaouen, you've been magical.

I'm also making a mental note to get extra memory cards when I get back to Canada. I'm running out of space for all the photos I'm taking! I also wish I had brought a rain jacket. The weather has been lovely, but it's always good to be prepared, especially when exploring the outdoors.

Good night from Chefchaouen!
