Art in Motion and Silent Reflections

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of dynamic art installations and serene natural spaces that truly captured the essence of Naoshima. From the rhythmic dance of kinetic sculptures to the quiet whispers of a hidden forest, each experience was a unique exploration of art and nature. It's amazing how this island manages to surprise me every day, revealing new layers of beauty and contemplation.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kinosaki Udon Naoshima. I had heard great things about their handmade udon, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The springy, chewy noodles in the warm broth were the perfect start to a day of exploring. It's always a pleasure to find a place frequented by locals; it adds an authentic touch to the experience.

Fueled and ready, I set out to find the George Rickey Three Squares Vertical Diagonal, 1972-82. The walk there was beautiful, with glimpses of the sea between the trees. When I finally arrived, I was mesmerized. The kinetic sculpture, with its squares gently swaying in the breeze, was a perfect example of how art can interact with its environment. The way the sunlight glinted off the metal and the rhythmic motion of the squares created a calming, almost meditative effect. It was a reminder that art isn't just static; it can be dynamic and ever-changing, just like nature itself.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Next on my list was La forêt des murmures. Getting there involved a bit of a trek, but the effort was well worth it. As I entered the forest, I was immediately enveloped in a sense of tranquility. Hundreds of wind chimes hung from the trees, each with a name written on a small piece of paper. The gentle breeze created a symphony of soft, whispering sounds, a poignant tribute to the memories of loved ones. It was a truly moving experience, a reminder of the importance of cherishing those we hold dear. I found myself reflecting on my own family, especially my daughter Eglė, and the precious moments we share. It made me realize how important it is to create lasting memories with the people we love.

The forest itself was enchanting, with dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves and moss-covered stones adding to the mystical atmosphere. I spent a good hour there, simply listening to the whispers and letting my thoughts wander. It was a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a chance to reconnect with myself and appreciate the beauty of the natural world.

After my contemplative forest walk, I decided to explore Tsunosaki. This scenic spot offered breathtaking coastal views, with rocky cliffs and crystal-clear waters stretching as far as the eye could see. I took my time wandering along the shore, breathing in the fresh sea air and enjoying the stunning scenery. It was the perfect place to clear my head and feel grateful for the simple pleasures in life.

Lunch was at Yuunagi, a restaurant I had read about that's conveniently located near the port. I opted for their special fried fish dish, which was absolutely delicious. The fish was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the owners were incredibly welcoming. It's these kinds of authentic, local experiences that make traveling so rewarding.

As the day wound down, I treated myself to dinner at Cin.na.mon, a cozy restaurant known for its Naoshima curry made with fresh local seafood. The curry was rich and flavorful, with a perfect balance of spice and creaminess. It was the ideal way to end a day of exploration, a culinary delight that left me feeling satisfied and content.

Finally, I decided to cap off the evening with a drink at Little Plum. This quirky bar, housed in a renovated marine container, had a laid-back atmosphere and a great selection of drinks. I enjoyed a Naoshima beer while chatting with some of the locals, sharing stories and laughter. It was a fun, relaxed way to connect with the community and get a glimpse into island life.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Art Island Center, Naoshima Hall, and Yokobou Park. I'm also looking forward to trying Luke's Table for breakfast and EAT LOCAL 直島食堂 for lunch. I might even do some souvenir shopping at Naoshima Shop Umihotaru.

As I walked back to My Lodge Naoshima, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this solo adventure. Naoshima has a way of captivating the soul, of inspiring creativity and reflection. It's a place where art and nature intertwine, where the simple act of wandering can lead to profound discoveries. And as I drifted off to sleep, I knew that tomorrow would bring even more wonders to uncover.

Today, Naoshima felt like a sanctuary where art, nature, and personal reflection seamlessly intertwined. Each location offered a unique perspective, contributing to a day filled with both visual splendor and profound contemplation. The gentle sway of George Rickey’s sculpture, the whispering chimes of La forêt des murmures, and the expansive coastal views at Tsunosaki collectively created an immersive experience that resonated deeply with my soul. As I prepare for another day of exploration, I carry with me the serene energy of the island, ready to embrace whatever new artistic and natural wonders await.
