Day 13: Chasing Horizons: A Day of Breathtaking Views and Local Flavors in Humahuaca
Discover Humahuaca's stunning vistas, savor local cuisine, and experience the vibrant culture of Argentina's Quebrada with friends.
A Day Among Giants
Today was all about soaking in the vastness and beauty of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. With my friends in tow, I set out to explore the region's panoramic views and immerse myself in the local culture, one delicious bite and scenic vista at a time. It was a day filled with winding roads, stunning landscapes, and the kind of camaraderie that makes travel so special.
Our morning began in Humahuaca, where we fueled up for the day at La Vieja Cazona. The reviews mentioned generous portions and authentic regional dishes, so I figured it was the perfect spot to experience the local flavors. I opted for a hearty breakfast of *empanadas* and strong coffee, which definitely hit the spot and prepared me for the day ahead. My friends tried some local breads and pastries, and we all agreed it was a great start to our explorations. It's always a good sign when a place is popular with locals; it speaks volumes about its authenticity and value.

With our bellies full, we hopped in our rental car and set off towards the Vista Panoramica Camino a Iruya, limite Jujuy Salta. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads climbing higher and higher into the mountains. I remember thinking how glad I was that we decided to rent a car; it gave us the freedom to stop whenever we wanted and truly appreciate the scenery. As we ascended, the landscape transformed into a kaleidoscope of colors, with layers of rock formations painted in shades of red, orange, and ochre. The air grew crisper, and the views became more and more expansive.

Reaching the Vista Panoramica was like stepping onto the edge of the world. The views were simply breathtaking, stretching out across the vast expanse of the Quebrada de Humahuaca. Iruya, a remote village clinging to the mountainside, was visible in the distance, looking like something out of a postcard. We spent a good hour there, snapping photos, marveling at the scenery, and simply soaking it all in. It was one of those moments where you feel incredibly small yet profoundly connected to the world around you.
Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are found not in the destinations themselves, but in the journeys that take you there.
Next on our itinerary was the Camino a la Garganta del Diablo. Now, there seems to be a few Garganta del Diablo locations in Argentina, and this one was near Tilcara. The drive there was equally stunning, with more winding roads and dramatic landscapes. The road to the Garganta del Diablo was unpaved, and I had to drive carefully. The views, however, were totally worth it. The Garganta del Diablo itself is an impressive canyon carved by the force of water over millennia. We hiked a short distance to get a closer look, marveling at the sheer power of nature. The terracotta colors of the rocks, combined with the sparse green vegetation, created a striking contrast.

After a morning of exploring, we were definitely ready for lunch. We headed back towards Humahuaca and found Pachamanka Restaurante. I had read about its modern take on traditional Andean cuisine, and I was eager to try it. The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The menu was filled with tempting options, from llama steaks to quinoa risotto. I decided to try the llama medallion, and it was absolutely delicious. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the accompanying sauce was the perfect complement. My friends opted for other regional specialties, and everyone was happy with their choices. The service was attentive and friendly, adding to the overall positive experience.

In the late afternoon, we decided to embrace the local culture with a visit to Cerveza Artesanal Quebrada de Humahuaca. As a freelance software developer working remotely from Berlin, I've come to appreciate the craft beer scene, and I was curious to see what Argentina had to offer. The bar was located in Coctaca, a short drive from Humahuaca. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with a mix of locals and tourists. The selection of artisanal beers was impressive, with a variety of styles and flavors. I tried a few different brews, and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and creativity. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

For dinner, we chose Restaurante La Cacharpaya, drawn in by the promise of live music and traditional Argentine cuisine. The restaurant was buzzing with energy, and the sounds of folk music filled the air. We ordered a selection of classic dishes, including *empanadas*, *locro*, and grilled meats. The food was hearty and flavorful, and the live music added to the festive atmosphere. It was a truly immersive cultural experience, and I felt grateful to be sharing it with my friends.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our adventures over a final round of drinks. We had seen incredible landscapes, tasted delicious food, and experienced the warmth and hospitality of the local people. It was a day that I will cherish for a long time to come.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Humahuaca itself, visiting the Cartel Humahuaca and the Amphitheatre. I'm also hoping to pick up some souvenirs at ARTESANIAS SASAKUY. Each day in the Quebrada de Humahuaca reveals new facets of this incredible region, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. What I'm really looking forward to is visiting the Humahuaca sign, since I have seen so many pictures of it, and I want to have my own. I also want to see the Amphitheater. I'm not sure what to expect, but I'm sure it will be something special.
It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel. The opportunity to explore new places, meet new people, and experience different cultures is truly enriching. And sharing these experiences with friends makes them even more special. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a sense of gratitude for the journey and excitement for what lies ahead.
