A Day of Reflection and Rediscovery

Today was a day of diving deeper into Kyoto's soul, moving beyond the postcard-perfect images to find the quiet, contemplative corners that resonate with my own search for understanding and connection. It was a journey through temples, gardens, and even a bit of vintage shopping, each experience adding a new layer to my appreciation of this ancient city.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at The Cellar Kyoto. I opted for their Japanese-style breakfast, a delightful assortment of small dishes that provided a gentle introduction to the day. It was a far cry from the usual Berlin fare, but I found myself enjoying the subtle flavors and the sense of calm it instilled. Fuelled up, I set off to explore the temples, starting with Daitoku-ji Temple.

Daitoku-ji Temple is a sprawling complex of sub-temples, each with its own unique character. Wandering through the grounds, I felt a sense of stepping back in time. The free public areas are impressive, offering glimpses into the architecture and design that define Kyoto's temples. While the main buildings were interesting, the real treasures lay within the sub-temples. I chose to visit a few of these, each requiring a separate admission fee, and each offering a distinct experience. The rock gardens were particularly captivating, their carefully arranged stones evoking a sense of tranquility and contemplation. It reminded me a bit of the rock garden I visited in Berlin, but with a distinctly Japanese aesthetic.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand gestures, but in quiet moments of reflection.

From Daitoku-ji, I made my way to the Kyoto Botanical Gardens.

Despite it being January, the gardens held a certain charm. While the vibrant colors of spring and autumn were absent, there was a stark beauty to the winter landscape. The bare trees stood in silhouette against the sky, and the evergreens provided a splash of color amidst the muted tones. The conservatory was a welcome escape from the cold, a lush oasis filled with plants from around the world. I spent a good hour wandering through its various sections, admiring the diversity of plant life and imagining the gardens in full bloom.

Lunch was at Kikuichimonjushirokanenaga honten, a restaurant specializing in knife cutlery.

This wasn't just a meal; it was an immersion into Japanese craftsmanship. The knives on display were works of art, each one meticulously crafted and honed to perfection. The meal itself was a multi-course affair, each dish showcasing the chef's skill and attention to detail. I opted for a traditional Japanese set, eager to experience the local flavors. It was a bit of a splurge, but well worth it for the experience.

After lunch, I headed to Eikan-dō Temple, also known as Zenrinji Temple.

Eikando is renowned for its autumn colors, but even in winter, it possessed a serene beauty. The temple buildings are nestled into the hillside, connected by wooden corridors that wind through the trees. The Tahoto Pagoda, perched atop the hill, offered panoramic views of the city. Legend has it that the temple's main object of worship, an Amida Buddha statue, turned its head to speak to a priest named Eikan, giving the temple its popular name. The story added a layer of mystique to the already enchanting atmosphere.

As the afternoon waned, I decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at Harajuku Chicago Kyoto Store.

As someone who appreciates a good vintage find, this used clothing store was a treasure trove. The store was filled with an eclectic mix of styles, from retro outfits to trendy casual wear. I ended up purchasing a vintage kimono, a unique souvenir to remind me of my time in Kyoto. It's funny, I never thought I'd be buying a kimono in a thrift store, but it felt like the perfect way to connect with the local culture and add a bit of Berlin flair to my wardrobe.

Dinner was at Saishuan Shiraki, a small izakaya known for its vegan-friendly options.

The owner, Miho-san, was incredibly welcoming, and the food was delicious. I opted for the vegan set menu, a delightful assortment of small dishes that showcased the creativity and skill of the chef. It was a cozy and intimate setting, a perfect way to end a day of exploration.

As I reflect on the day, I'm struck by the contrast between the bustling city and the tranquil spaces I visited. Kyoto offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity, a place where ancient temples stand alongside modern shops and restaurants. It's a city that rewards exploration, inviting you to delve deeper and discover its hidden gems.

Tomorrow marks the last day of my Kyoto adventure, and I plan to make the most of it. The itinerary includes a visit to the Kyoto International Manga Museum, the Kyoto Railway Museum, and Fushimi Inari Taisha Otabisho. In the evening, I'm planning to unwind at the Kyoto Star Bar, a fitting end to my solo journey through this captivating city. I am especially excited about the Manga Museum – it will be a great way to connect with my love of technology and history through a modern lens.

This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been a journey of self-discovery. As a freelance software developer working remotely from Berlin, I often find myself immersed in the digital world. This trip to Kyoto has allowed me to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the physical world, to appreciate the beauty of nature and the richness of human culture. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best way to find yourself is to get lost in a new place.

The weather in Kyoto today was mild, with temperatures hovering around 50°F (10°C). It was a bit chilly, but nothing that a warm coat and scarf couldn't handle. The forecast for tomorrow is similar, so I'll be sure to dress accordingly.

As I prepare for my final day in Kyoto, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and anticipation. This trip has been a transformative experience, and I'm eager to see what tomorrow holds. I'm also looking forward to returning to Berlin, to share my experiences with friends and colleagues, and to apply the lessons I've learned to my work and my life. But for now, I'll savor the last few moments of my solo adventure in Kyoto, a city that has captured my heart and soul.
