Solo Adventure Through Kyoto's Cultural Marvels
Day 8: A Day of Art and Tranquility in Kyoto
Discover Kyoto's blend of traditional arts, serene temples, and vibrant parks, creating unforgettable memories in the heart of Japan.
Gion's Charm and Temple Serenity
Today was a beautiful exploration of Kyoto, filled with traditional arts, serene temples, and the simple joy of wandering through a classic Japanese park. It was a day that reminded me why I love traveling solo – the freedom to immerse myself in the moment and discover hidden gems at my own pace.
My day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Nakamura. I opted for the Japanese breakfast set, eager to start the day with something authentic. The delicate flavors of the miso soup, perfectly cooked rice, and various small dishes were a delightful way to wake up my taste buds. It was a far cry from my usual Berlin breakfasts, but a welcome change that set the tone for a day of cultural immersion. I have to admit, having lived in Berlin for three years now, I've grown accustomed to a certain level of culinary diversity, but nothing quite compares to the meticulous preparation and presentation of a traditional Japanese breakfast.
After breakfast, I headed straight to Gion Corner. I’d heard so much about it, and I was keen to experience a condensed version of Japanese performing arts. The show was a captivating introduction to Kyomai dance performed by Maiko, a traditional tea ceremony, Ikebana flower arrangement, and more. It was a whirlwind of cultural experiences, each art form presented with such grace and precision. I found myself particularly drawn to the Kyomai dance, the dancers' movements so fluid and expressive, it was like watching poetry in motion.

The essence of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.
Leaving Gion Corner, I made my way to Shorenin Temple. Known as one of Kyoto's Monzeki temples, it once housed priests of imperial lineage. The temple's serene atmosphere was immediately calming. The Kachoden drawing room, with its exquisite portraits and paintings on sliding doors, opened up to a beautiful garden with a pond. I sat on the tatami mats, admiring the view, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. The connection between the buildings through wooden walkways added to the temple's charm. Wandering through the temple grounds, I was struck by the giant camphor trees, said to be nearly a thousand years old. The Shijokodo Hall, housing the temple’s main objects of worship, was particularly impressive, even though the artifacts were not on display. Shorenin’s history is closely tied to the imperial family, and you can definitely feel the stateliness of an imperial residence there. It was a welcome contrast to the bustling streets of Gion.

Next on my list was Maruyama Park, a short walk from Shorenin Temple. As Kyoto's oldest park, it provided a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll. Even though it's January, the park had a quiet beauty, with manicured gardens and peaceful pathways. I could imagine how crowded it must get during cherry blossom season, with locals and tourists alike flocking to see the weeping cherry tree in full bloom. I took a moment to sit by the pond, watching the ducks glide across the water, and simply enjoyed the tranquility. Maruyama Park offered a respite from the city, a place to breathe and reflect.

For lunch, I ventured to Kakyo, a restaurant that blends Japanese cuisine with a French touch. I opted for the Omakase course, trusting the chef to guide me through a culinary journey. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The chef's expertise in blending Japanese and French techniques was evident in every bite. It was an exquisite meal that engaged all my senses. The seasonal ingredients were incredibly fresh, and the chef's innovative approach to traditional cuisine was truly impressive. I paired the meal with a sake recommended by the sommelier, which complemented the dishes perfectly.

As evening approached, I decided to try out a local bar called UNDERBAR-KYOTO. It had been a long day of exploring, and I was in the mood for a relaxing drink. The bar had a cool, laid-back vibe, with friendly staff and a great selection of cocktails. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The neon lights added a pop of color to the place, and the music created a fun atmosphere. I even got to chat with some locals, exchanging travel stories and recommendations. It’s moments like these that make traveling so rewarding – connecting with people from different backgrounds and sharing experiences.

For dinner, I indulged in a teppanyaki experience at Teppanyaki Minami. The chef's skillful performance on the iron griddle was mesmerizing. From the perfectly seared Wagyu beef to the succulent lobster, each dish was cooked to perfection. The combination of flavors and textures was simply divine. The restaurant had a sophisticated ambiance, with subtle lighting and large glass windows framing a Japanese garden. It was a truly memorable dining experience. I opted for the Minami Set Dinner Menu, a 7-course meal that included assorted appetizers, live lobster, garden salad, grilled vegetables, and a choice of tenderloin or sirloin Kobe beef. The meal was a feast for the senses, and the chef's attention to detail was impeccable.
