Today was a day of delving deeper into the mystique of Delphi, a place where history and myth intertwine. Aoife and I set out to explore sites that resonate with the whispers of ancient rituals and beliefs. The crisp November air carried with it a sense of reverence as we traced the steps of pilgrims and priestesses from centuries past.

Our day began, as usual, with a hearty breakfast at TAVERNA BASANOS. The view from there is simply stunning, and it set the perfect tone for a day immersed in history. I enjoyed some cheese pies, while Aoife had some yogurt.

Tholos of Athena Pronaia: A Circular Enigma

Our first stop was the Tholos of Athena Pronaia. Even though most Delphi day tours do not include the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia from November to March, we made sure to plan an independent visit. The Tholos stands apart from the other ruins due to its circular shape. Constructed around 380 BC, its purpose remains an enigma. Some suggest it was a ceremonial site, possibly linked to female deities, while others believe it served as a treasury. Regardless, its architectural design is stunning, even in its partially ruined state.

The marble shimmered in the soft sunlight filtering through the olive groves. Aoife, with her librarian's eye for detail, pointed out the intricate carvings that still adorned some of the metopes. I tried to imagine the building in its full glory, with its Doric columns and the statues of women adorning the roof. It must have been an awe-inspiring sight for those approaching Delphi in ancient times.

As an antiques dealer, I'm always fascinated by the materials used in ancient constructions. Next, we ventured to the Castalia Spring. This spring, nestled in the ravine between the Phaedriades cliffs, was the sacred source of Delphi. All visitors, from athletes to pilgrims, would stop here to purify themselves before consulting the Oracle. The Pythia herself would also cleanse in these waters before delivering her prophecies.

The air was filled with a sense of tranquility, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

Lunch at Elia Restaurant Delphi: A Modern Twist on Tradition

For lunch, we chose Elia Restaurant Delphi. This restaurant offers a modern twist on Greek traditional dishes. We shared some moussaka balls and cheese croquettes. The view overlooking the ancient theatre was magnificent.

Jimmy’s Antiques: A Treasure Trove

In the afternoon, I couldn’t resist a visit to Jimmy’s Antiques. As you know, I have a soft spot for antique shops, and I was hoping to find a hidden gem. The shop was filled with an eclectic mix of artifacts, from ancient pottery shards to vintage jewelry. I spent a pleasant hour browsing the collection, chatting with Jimmy about the history of each piece. I did not find a treasure, but I enjoyed the visit.

As evening approached, we made our way to To Kentrikon for dinner. We enjoyed some local dishes, savoring the flavors of Greece. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and welcoming.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Ancient Theater of Delphi and the Corycian Cave. I am excited to see the theater where ancient dramas were performed and to hike to the cave with its breathtaking views.
