Echoes of the Past in the Blue City

Today, Olivia and I embarked on a journey that transcended the typical tourist trail, delving into the historical and cultural depths of Chefchaouen and its surroundings. It was a day filled with poignant reflections and vibrant discoveries, a testament to the enduring spirit of this enchanting region.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at BILMOS. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Moroccan coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our explorations. Olivia opted for the Moroccan pancakes, while I chose a classic omelet. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can fuel a day of adventure! BILMOS is a popular spot, and I can see why, it offers a great menu with options like eggs, bacon, toast, French toast, pancakes, waffles, omelets, and more. They also have a lunch menu with sandwiches, salads, and burgers. There are vegetarian and vegan options available on both the breakfast and lunch menus.

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off to explore El Mellah, Chefchaouen's old Jewish quarter. The Mellah, adjacent to the Al Souika neighborhood, is a testament to the city's history of cultural and religious convergence. For centuries, Moroccan Jews lived here alongside Muslims, contributing to the city's social and economic development. As we wandered through the narrow streets, I couldn't help but reflect on the stories of those who once called this place home. The buildings, though weathered by time, stood as silent witnesses to a vibrant past. It was so interesting to learn that the Mellah contributed to the urban expansion of the Medina, fostering social and economic development and establishing the city as a model of urban planning, convergence, cultural blending, and respect for religious and ethnic differences.

“Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners where history whispers its secrets.”

Next on our itinerary was a visit to Tetouan's old Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The drive to Tetouan was a scenic adventure in itself, the winding roads offering breathtaking views of the Rif Mountains. Tetouan’s medina is one of the smallest of the Moroccan medinas but it is important because its buildings have remained untouched by subsequent outside influences. As we entered the Medina, we were immediately transported back in time. The narrow, maze-like streets were bustling with activity, vendors selling everything from spices and textiles to traditional crafts. The architecture bore a distinct Andalusian influence, a reminder of the city's history as a refuge for Muslims and Jews expelled from Spain during the Reconquista. Olivia, with her keen eye for detail, was fascinated by the intricate tilework and the ornate doorways. As an urban planner, I was particularly interested in the layout of the Medina, a testament to centuries of urban development and cultural exchange. Tetouan's medina has been settled since the 8th century and was developed as a major centre by the Merenids from 1307. The Merenid city was later destroyed by the Spanish in 1399, and only re-established in 1484 by Muslims and Jews fleeing the Christian re-conquest of southern Spain.

Stepping into Tetouan's Medina felt like walking through a living map of history. This UNESCO site, a crossroads between North Africa and Europe, showcases a unique blend of Spanish and Arab cultures. Founded by Andalusian refugees, its architecture and narrow alleyways whisper tales of resilience and cultural fusion. It's a place where every corner tells a story, inviting you to lose yourself in its vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and scents.

After immersing ourselves in the history of Tetouan, we returned to Chefchaouen for some retail therapy. Our destination was the Full Moon shop, a local gem known for its unique selection of handcrafted goods. The shop was a treasure trove of colorful textiles, intricate ceramics, and aromatic spices. Olivia, always on the lookout for unique souvenirs, found a beautiful hand-painted bowl. I, on the other hand, was drawn to the collection of local spices, stocking up on Ras El Hanout and saffron to bring back home to Toronto. As someone passionate about sustainable living, I appreciated the shop's commitment to supporting local artisans and promoting traditional crafts. Smaidie, a reviewer on Etsy, mentioned purchasing an 8x10 lustre moon print from a shop with full moon energy, which resonated with the shop's overall vibe.

For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant Dar El Salam, recommended by a local we met in the Medina. The restaurant was a cozy, family-run establishment, serving traditional Moroccan cuisine. Olivia opted for the tagine, while I chose the couscous. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, a testament to the chef's skill and the quality of the local ingredients. As we savored our meal, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the authentic flavors of Morocco. The staff were incredibly welcoming, making us feel like honored guests in their home. Many reviewers highlight the friendly staff and the exceptional service. The restaurant's design transports you to another age, and the grounds feature a lovely garden and pool.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Chez Foad for dinner. This restaurant, located in Place Outa el Hammam, is known for its traditional Moroccan dishes and its warm, inviting atmosphere. The menu at Chez Foad includes a variety of Moroccan favorites, such as tagine, couscous, and grilled meats. I decided to try the tagine, while Olivia opted for the grilled chicken. The tagine was rich and flavorful, the chicken was tender and juicy. As we enjoyed our meal, we watched as the square came alive with music and laughter. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. The fabolous Moroccan cuisine is beloved by customers, who recommend trying the tagine. Many also suggest enjoying a glass of tea with your meal.

Reflecting on the day, I was struck by the resilience and the enduring spirit of the people of Chefchaouen. Despite the challenges they have faced throughout history, they have managed to preserve their cultural heritage and their unique way of life. As we prepare to leave Chefchaouen tomorrow, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to have experienced this magical place. We are planning to visit Plaza Mohammed V and Bab el Mahrouk tomorrow, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Restaurant Bar Chaouen.

This journey has been more than just a vacation; it has been a lesson in history, culture, and the importance of preserving our shared heritage. As we continue our travels, I know that the memories of Chefchaouen will stay with us forever.

The blue hues of Chefchaouen, initially brought by Jewish refugees symbolizing the sky and heaven, have now become a symbol of peace and tranquility for all who visit. The city's Mellah, a former Jewish quarter, stands as a testament to a history of co-existence and cultural exchange.

As we prepare for our final day in Chefchaouen, I am reminded of the importance of sustainable tourism and responsible travel. It is our duty, as visitors, to respect the local culture, support local businesses, and minimize our impact on the environment. By doing so, we can ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to experience the magic of Chefchaouen for themselves. The Easter Weekend brings a vibrant atmosphere to Chefchaouen, with events and activities that blend cultural immersion and adventure. This period offers a mix of relaxation and exploration. Shopping for unique, handcrafted goods in the bustling medina, from woven textiles to intricate ceramics, provides a glimpse into local craftsmanship.

As I sit here, writing these words, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to have experienced this magical place with my wife, Olivia. Tomorrow we will explore Plaza Mohammed V, Bab el Mahrouk, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Restaurant Bar Chaouen. Good night from Chefchaouen!
