A Blend of Culture and Relaxation

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of cultural immersion in Tetouan and laid-back exploration in Chefchaouen. Olivia and I ventured out, eager to see what hidden gems these Moroccan cities held. From modern art to serene parks and delightful culinary experiences, it was a day filled with discoveries and scenic beauty.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mounir Food. I opted for the Moroccan pancakes, while Olivia chose an omelette. It was a simple yet satisfying start, fueling us up for our journey to Tetouan. The friendly staff and cozy atmosphere made it a pleasant experience. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for the entire day, and Mounir Food certainly started ours off on the right foot.

The drive to Tetouan was scenic, with rolling hills and lush landscapes. As an urban planner, I couldn't help but appreciate the way the towns and villages dotted the countryside, each with its own unique character and charm. It reminded me of the importance of sustainable community development, a principle I strive to uphold in my work back in Toronto.

Exploring Tetuan Modern Art Center

Our first stop in Tetouan was the Tetuan Modern Art Center. Housed in a magnificent Spanish-castle-like building that once served as the railway station to Ceuta, the architecture alone was worth the visit. Inside, we were greeted by a diverse collection of contemporary Moroccan art. The center showcases paintings and sculptures from local and international artists, offering a glimpse into the vibrant creativity of Moroccan culture.

Olivia and I wandered through the galleries, admiring the various pieces. I was particularly drawn to a series of abstract paintings that seemed to capture the essence of the Moroccan landscape. Olivia, with her artistic eye, appreciated the intricate sculptures and the way they played with light and shadow. The center also hosts workshops and community engagement programs, making it a dynamic space for artistic expression. As someone passionate about architecture, I found the building itself to be as captivating as the art it housed. The blend of traditional Moroccan design and modern minimalism created a unique and inspiring environment.

Relaxing in Feddan Park

After immersing ourselves in the art scene, we headed to Feddan Park for a relaxing break. This urban oasis, located near the Royal Palace, is a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists alike. The park was rebuilt after being destroyed during the construction of the palace, and it now serves as a tranquil retreat in the heart of the city.

We strolled along the wide pedestrian zone, enjoying the cityscape views. The park was bustling with activity – families picnicking, children playing, and friends chatting. We found a cozy spot near a café and ordered some refreshing mint tea. Sipping the tea, we watched the world go by, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It was a perfect moment of respite, a chance to recharge before continuing our adventure. As an urban planner, I couldn't help but appreciate the importance of green spaces in a city. Feddan Park provides a vital space for recreation and relaxation, contributing to the overall well-being of the community.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Lunch at Café Sindibad

With renewed energy, we made our way back to Chefchaouen for lunch at Café Sindibad. This charming café is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and warm hospitality. The menu featured a variety of traditional dishes, and we decided to try the tagine and couscous, both highly recommended.

The tagine was a flavorful stew of tender meat and vegetables, cooked in a traditional clay pot. The couscous was light and fluffy, served with a generous portion of vegetables and a savory broth. Both dishes were delicious, a true taste of Moroccan cuisine. The café itself was cozy and inviting, with colorful decor and comfortable seating. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. As we savored our meal, we couldn't help but appreciate the simple pleasures of life – good food, good company, and a beautiful setting.

Sunset Views and Dinner at Restaurant Hamsa

As the day drew to a close, we sought out the perfect spot to watch the sunset. We ventured up towards the Spanish Mosque, a short trek from the center of Chefchaouen. The mosque, built by the Spanish in the 1920s, sits atop a hill, offering panoramic views of the blue city and the surrounding mountains.

The walk up was a bit challenging, but the view from the top was well worth the effort. The city stretched out before us, a sea of blue buildings bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. It was a breathtaking sight, a moment of pure magic. We sat there, hand in hand, watching as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with vibrant colors. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. The sunset in Chefchaouen is truly a spectacle to behold, and I'm so glad we made the effort to witness it.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Hamsa, known for its modern take on Moroccan cuisine and stunning views of the city. Located upstairs off the main square, the restaurant boasts a rooftop terrace with panoramic vistas of Chefchaouen's iconic blue houses.

We started with the falafel and hummus, both delicious and flavorful. For our main courses, I opted for a traditional Moroccan dish, while Olivia chose a vegetarian option. The food was excellent, a perfect blend of traditional flavors and modern techniques. The rooftop terrace provided a stunning backdrop for our meal, with the blue city twinkling below us. The service was attentive and professional, making us feel like valued guests. It was a delightful culinary experience, a fitting end to a day of exploration and discovery.

As we walked back to Hotel Dar Mounir, we reflected on the day's adventures. From the modern art in Tetouan to the serene parks and the stunning sunset views in Chefchaouen, it was a day filled with beauty and inspiration. I am also looking forward to tomorrow where we are planning to visit El Mellah and Tetouan's old Medina map, and then do some shopping at the Full Moon shop.
