Arrival in the Holy City
After a long journey from Dublin, via Casablanca, Aoife and I finally arrived in Moulay Idriss. The air is thick with the scent of spices and the sounds of a culture entirely different from our own. It's invigorating, to say the least. This is day one of our Moroccan adventure, and I already know this trip to the Moulay Idriss Region will be one for the books.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at SCORPION HOUSE. Perched high on a hillside, the views were simply breathtaking. The house itself is a unique retreat, filled with eclectic finds and Moroccan art. It felt like stepping into another world. The owner also runs Cafe Clock in Fez, which I hear is quite popular. Sipping on mint tea while overlooking the town, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for what lay ahead. The September sun was gentle, casting a warm glow over the whitewashed buildings. I was particularly struck by the cylindrical minaret of the Sentissi Mosque. It’s quite a unique sight and a testament to the town's rich history. Aoife, ever the observer, was already snapping photos, trying to capture the essence of this magical place.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing them with all your senses.
After breakfast, we ventured into Moulay Idriss Downtown. The streets were bustling with locals going about their daily lives. Donkeys laden with goods trod along the narrow alleyways, and the air was filled with the chatter of bartering and greetings. We meandered through the market, taking in the sights and smells of the local produce. Aoife was particularly fascinated by the vibrant colors of the spices, while I found myself drawn to the intricate patterns of the rugs and textiles. It's a sensory overload in the best possible way.

For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant Moulay Idriss. It was a charming little spot, tucked away in a quiet corner of the medina. We feasted on traditional Moroccan fare – tagine and couscous, of course. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the culinary heritage of this region. I must admit, I’ve always had a soft spot for local cuisine, and this meal certainly didn't disappoint. It was simple, honest food, cooked with love and care.

As the afternoon wore on, we found ourselves drawn to the Zaouia of Moulay Idriss I. Though non-Muslims aren't allowed to enter, we were able to admire its green-tiled minaret and rooftop from the Sidi Abdellah el Hajjam Terrace. The view was simply stunning. The town spread out before us, a patchwork of white buildings against the backdrop of the surrounding hills. It was a moment of profound peace and reflection. I couldn't help but think of the countless pilgrims who have journeyed to this holy site over the centuries. It's a place steeped in history and spirituality.
Before dinner, we decided to revisit SCORPION HOUSE for a drink. I opted for a local beer, while Aoife chose a refreshing mint tea. We sat on the terrace, watching the sun slowly dip below the horizon. The sky was ablaze with color, painting a masterpiece across the canvas of the evening. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.
Dinner was at La Baraka. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We ordered a selection of dishes, eager to sample more of the local cuisine. The couscous and chicken were particularly delicious. As we ate, we chatted about our plans for tomorrow. We're heading to the Site Archéologique de Volubilis, the ancient Roman ruins just a short distance from Moulay Idriss. I'm excited to explore this historical site and learn more about the region's rich past. Aoife is looking forward to visiting The Anou Cooperative, where she hopes to find some unique souvenirs.

Reflecting on our first day, I'm struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people. Despite the language barrier, we were met with smiles and kindness at every turn. This is a place where tradition and modernity coexist, where history is palpable, and where the simple things in life are celebrated. I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience this culture firsthand, and I look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you in the days to come.
As we settle into our guesthouse for the night, I feel a sense of contentment wash over me. The call to prayer echoes through the town, a soothing lullaby that carries me off to sleep. Tomorrow promises new discoveries, and I can't wait to see what awaits us. Goodnight from Moulay Idriss.
