Guatape's Hidden Gems

Today was a day of exploration and immersion in the vibrant culture of Guatape. Olivia and I set out to discover the hidden gems of this colorful town, from breathtaking viewpoints to charming streets adorned with art. It was a day filled with visual delights and authentic Colombian experiences, further solidifying our love for this enchanting place.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at The Snuggly Duckling. I chuckled at the name, reminiscent of a fairy tale pub, but the Colombian cuisine was no joke. I opted for a traditional *arepa* with cheese, while Olivia chose a *bandeja paisa*, a feast of rice, beans, meat, and plantains. The coffee, of course, was essential to kickstart our adventures. It's funny, back in Toronto, I'm all about my usual cafe, but here, I'm embracing every local flavor.

Fueled up, we headed to our first destination: Mirador El Águila. The views from there were simply stunning. The landscape unfolded beneath us, revealing the vastness of the lake and the intricate network of islands. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, hoping to do justice to the panoramic vista, but some views are simply too grand for a lens. Olivia, ever the history buff, pointed out how the creation of this lake in the 1970s, while vital for hydroelectric power, also meant the loss of some settlements. It's a reminder that progress often comes with a price.

Sometimes, the most beautiful views come after the hardest climbs.

Next on our list was Callejón Julia Pastusa, a narrow street known for its vibrant murals. As we walked through the *callejón*, we were enveloped in a riot of colors and artistic expressions. Each mural told a story, depicting local traditions, historical figures, and scenes from daily life. I found myself particularly drawn to a mural of Julia Pastusa herself, a local character who, according to Olivia, was quite the personality.

Olivia, with her high school teacher instincts, was eager to learn the stories behind each painting, engaging with local artists and vendors. I admired her ability to connect with people, a trait that always makes our travels richer. We sampled some local snacks from a nearby vendor, *empanadas* and *buñuelos*, savoring the flavors of Colombia. It struck me how art and food intertwine here, each enhancing the other, painting a vivid picture of the local culture.

Our afternoon was spent at Malecón de Guatapé, the town's waterfront promenade. The *malecón* was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike strolling along the water's edge. We watched as boats glided across the lake, offering tours of the surrounding islands. The air was filled with music, laughter, and the aroma of street food. I couldn't resist trying a *mango biche*, green mango with salt and lime, a surprisingly refreshing treat.

We found a bench overlooking the water and simply sat, soaking in the atmosphere. The sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the lake and the surrounding hills. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a perfect ending to a day of exploration. As an urban planner, I couldn't help but appreciate how well the town integrated its natural surroundings, creating spaces for both recreation and contemplation. Guatape is a lesson in sustainable community development, a concept I strive to promote back in Toronto.

For dinner, we chose La Roca Restaurante Bar, known for its local cuisine and lively ambiance. We shared a *bandeja paisa* and *trucha*, savoring the rich flavors of the region. The restaurant was filled with music and laughter, creating a festive atmosphere. We even tried our hand at dancing to the local rhythms, much to the amusement of the locals. Olivia, surprisingly, proved to be a natural, while I struggled to keep up. It was a humbling but hilarious experience.

As the evening drew to a close, we decided to check out Tiki Taka, a local bar known for its cocktails. I opted for a *guaro sour*, a local concoction made with *aguardiente*, while Olivia chose a *lulo margarita*. The drinks were strong and flavorful, a perfect nightcap to our adventurous day. We chatted with the bartender, learning more about the local culture and traditions. He shared stories of the town's history, its struggles and triumphs, painting a vivid picture of life in Guatape.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep sense of connection to this place and its people. Guatape is more than just a pretty town; it's a living, breathing community with a rich history and a vibrant culture. As we walked back to our guesthouse, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this experience. Traveling with Olivia makes every adventure special, her enthusiasm and curiosity enriching our journey in countless ways.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore El Zocalo and take a BiciCar Pedalea Tour Ecológico. I'm excited to see more of Guatape's unique architecture and learn about its history. We also hope to visit the Monasterio Santa Maria De La Epifania and Parque Comfama Guatapé. It promises to be another day filled with exploration and discovery, and I can't wait to share it with you all.

As I sit here writing this, the sounds of Guatape lull me into a peaceful sleep. The memories of the day flood my mind, the vibrant colors, the delicious flavors, the warm smiles of the locals. Guatape has captured my heart, and I know that this is just the beginning of our Colombian adventure.

Goodnight from Guatape!

P.S. I almost forgot! I managed to find a small Spanish phrasebook at a local shop. It seems like my forgotten essential might come in handy after all!
