Guatapé Unveiled: Beyond the Rock
Today in Guatapé was all about diving deeper into the local culture and natural beauty that extends far beyond the iconic El Peñol. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and connection, reminding me why I love to travel – to discover the hidden gems that make a place truly special.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Casa de Ciclistas Guatape. This charming spot, recommended by several locals, was a delightful surprise. The aroma of freshly brewed Colombian coffee filled the air as we stepped inside, and the cozy atmosphere immediately made us feel at home. Olivia opted for the vegetable croissant, while I indulged in their signature bagel with bacon. Fuelled up and ready to explore, we set off to discover what Guatapé had in store for us.
Our first stop was El Zocalo for the BiciCar Pedalea Tour Ecológico. It was a unique way to see the town, pedaling along the colorful streets and learning about the history and culture from our guide. The vibrant zócalos, the decorative panels on the buildings, each told a story, reflecting the traditions and livelihoods of the local people. The tour was not only informative but also a fun, active way to experience the heart of Guatapé.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in the grand landmarks, but in the quiet corners and unexpected encounters of everyday life.
Next on our itinerary was the Monasterio Santa Maria De La Epifania, a place of serenity and reflection. Nestled in the Andes, the monastery offered a peaceful escape from the bustling town. As we walked through the grounds, we were enveloped by a sense of calm, the only sounds being the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant chirping of birds. The architecture was simple yet elegant, and the atmosphere was conducive to contemplation. We spent some time in the chapel, admiring the stained-glass windows and the quiet beauty of the space. It was a welcome respite, a moment to pause and appreciate the tranquility of our surroundings.

After our visit to the monastery, we decided to spend the afternoon at Parque Comfama Guatapé. This recreational park offered a variety of activities, from water sports to nature trails. Olivia and I rented a paddleboat and spent a leisurely hour on the water, enjoying the stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The park was filled with families and laughter, a vibrant atmosphere that was infectious. It was a reminder of the simple joys of life – spending time outdoors, connecting with nature, and sharing moments with loved ones.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Cerámicas Guatapé, a local shop showcasing the artistry of Colombian ceramics. I was on the lookout for a special memento to bring back home, something that would remind us of our time in this colorful town. The shop was filled with intricately designed plates, vases, and figurines, each piece telling a unique story. Olivia was particularly drawn to a set of hand-painted bowls, while I found a beautiful ceramic coffee mug adorned with a traditional zócalo pattern. Supporting local artisans and bringing a piece of Colombian culture back to Toronto felt like the perfect way to end our day.

For dinner, we ventured to Venezuela Mia, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Venezuelan cuisine. Being away from Toronto, with its rich Caribbean community, I sometimes miss the familiar flavors of home. The arepas and empanadas were a delicious reminder of my roots, and Olivia thoroughly enjoyed trying new dishes. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to cap off a day of exploration and discovery.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of the importance of slowing down and immersing oneself in the local culture. It's easy to get caught up in ticking off the major sights, but sometimes the most rewarding experiences are found in the unexpected moments, the hidden corners, and the interactions with the people who call this place home. Guatapé has so much more to offer than just El Peñol, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have explored its lesser-known treasures.
Tomorrow, we're planning a boat tour on the lake with Samantha boat tour, a visit to Parque de los Patos, and a stroll down Calle de los Paraguas. I'm particularly excited about the boat tour, as I've heard it offers a unique perspective of the town and the surrounding islands. And perhaps, in the evening, we'll unwind at San Tropel Charcutería Bar, a local spot known for its relaxed atmosphere and delicious snacks. I am looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this vibrant corner of Colombia.
As an urban planner, I often think about how tourism impacts local communities. It's crucial to support sustainable practices and businesses that prioritize the well-being of residents and the preservation of cultural heritage. I was glad to see that many businesses in Guatapé seemed to embrace this approach, and I hope that tourism continues to benefit the community in a responsible and sustainable way.
Olivia and I spent some time tonight discussing our favorite moments from the day. She was particularly moved by the tranquility of the monastery, while I was fascinated by the stories behind the zócalos. These shared experiences are what make traveling together so special, strengthening our bond and creating lasting memories. As we prepare for another day of exploration, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Guatapé, and I look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you.
Join us on a vibrant 10-day escape to Guatape, Colombia, where culture and breathtaking landscapes create a truly unforgettable adventure.
