Guatapé's Charms: A Day of Discovery

Today was a day of wandering and wonder in Guatapé. Olivia and I set out without a rigid plan, and the town unfolded before us like a vibrant storybook. From colorful streets to tranquil lakeside moments, it was a day filled with simple joys and delightful discoveries.

Our day began with a hearty Colombian breakfast at RESTAURANTE TERRAZA BLUE. Perched with a spectacular view overlooking the main park and the reservoir, the international menu suited our tastes perfectly. Olivia opted for a traditional arepa with cheese, while I went for a more familiar eggs benedict. Fortified, we were ready to explore!

Our first stop was the famous Calle de los Paraguas. I had seen pictures, of course, but nothing prepares you for the sheer explosion of color as you walk beneath a canopy of vibrant umbrellas. Olivia, ever the photographer, was in her element, snapping away at the kaleidoscope above. The street itself was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists browsing the artisan shops and enjoying the lively atmosphere. We picked up a couple of small, hand-painted zócalos as souvenirs, a perfect reminder of Guatapé's unique charm. As an urban planner, I found myself particularly drawn to the way the Calle de los Paraguas transformed a simple street into a dynamic public space, fostering community and creativity.

Sometimes, the simplest things – a colorful street, a shared meal, a moment of quiet reflection – are the most profound.

Next, we strolled over to Parque de los Patos. It's a lovely little park right on the edge of the reservoir. We watched families feeding the ducks and enjoyed the peacefulness of the water. Olivia, with her teacher's heart, was particularly delighted by the children's laughter and the ducks' enthusiastic quacking. It was a welcome respite from the bustle of the town center, a chance to simply be present and enjoy the beauty of nature.

After our peaceful interlude with the ducks, we decided to take a Samantha boat tour on the reservoir. The views from the water were breathtaking. Our guide shared stories about the area's history, including the controversial flooding of the old town of Peñol to create the reservoir. It was a stark reminder of the complex relationship between progress and preservation, a theme I often grapple with in my work as an urban planner. As we glided across the water, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the scale of the project and a touch of melancholy for what had been lost.

Lunch was at Guatacrep', a charming little spot known for its – you guessed it – crepes! Olivia went for a savory crepe filled with chicken and vegetables, while I indulged in a sweet one with Nutella and strawberries. It was the perfect mid-afternoon treat.

As evening approached, we stopped by San Tropel Charcutería Bar for a drink. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. We enjoyed a couple of local beers and watched the sunset over the lake. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

For dinner, we chose El Castillo Guatape. The Colombian dishes were delicious, and the ambiance was warm and welcoming. I tried the bandeja paisa, a hearty platter of beans, rice, meat, and avocado, while Olivia opted for a lighter grilled fish. We shared stories from our day, laughing and reminiscing about our favorite moments.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we took one last stroll through the town square, which was lively with music and chatter. Even though I was tired, I was also buzzing with energy from the day. Guatapé had captivated me with its vibrant colors, its friendly people, and its stunning natural beauty. It was a place that felt both familiar and exotic, a place that sparked my curiosity and nourished my soul.

Tomorrow, we are planning to explore Represa Guatapé, El Tobogán, and Muelle Guatape Extremo. I’m particularly excited about visiting Represa Guatapé, as exploring dams and large-scale water projects always gives me insight into the planning and engineering that goes into these structures. I’m also looking forward to Muelle Guatape Extremo, as I’ve heard it offers a unique perspective of the lake and surrounding landscape. And, of course, I’m curious about El Tobogán, as I’ve heard it’s a fun and quirky attraction. After that, we’ll grab breakfast at Montano, lunch at Don Oscar, and dinner at La Casona. Before all that, though, I need some sleep!

Guatapé has a way of seeping into your soul, leaving you with a sense of wonder and a desire to return. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but smile, grateful for another day of adventure with Olivia in this magical corner of Colombia. Traveling with Olivia makes every experience richer, and I'm so glad she's here to share this vibrant escape with me.
