Finding Lalibela's Soul: A Day of Tours and Tastes

Today was a beautiful blend of cultural immersion and culinary delights here in Lalibela. It's days like these that remind me why I love travelling – the chance to explore new perspectives, taste new flavours, and share these experiences with my family. From the moment we stepped out, the spirit of Ethiopia enveloped us, promising a day of unforgettable memories.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Mekane Leilt Butcher Restaurant. Now, I know what you might be thinking – a butcher restaurant for breakfast? But trust me, it was a delightful surprise. The aroma of freshly grilled meats mingled with the scent of local spices created a unique and inviting atmosphere. We savoured traditional Ethiopian breakfast dishes, fuelling up for a day of exploration. Nilton, of course, was most interested in the various cuts of meat on display, asking a barrage of questions about where they came from and how they were prepared. It was a great opportunity to teach him about the local economy and the importance of agriculture in Ethiopian culture.

After breakfast, we met with our guide from Explore Lalibela Tours. These tours are run by Kassahun who has been a tour guide in and around Lalibela for years, and organizes eco-trekking tours for hundreds of visitors. I am always looking for a great guide to show us around! I had arranged for a comprehensive tour of the town, eager to delve deeper into its history and culture. Our guide, Abebe, was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Lalibela, sharing fascinating stories and insights at every turn. He explained the history and significance of the rock-hewn churches, answering all of Nilton's questions with incredible patience. Francisca was particularly moved by the spiritual atmosphere, noting the palpable sense of devotion and reverence that permeated the air.

Travel is more than just seeing sights; it's about experiencing a culture, connecting with people, and creating memories that last a lifetime.

As we walked through the town, Abebe pointed out various landmarks and shared anecdotes about local life. He showed us the traditional houses with their unique architecture and explained the customs and traditions of the people. Nilton was fascinated by the local children playing traditional games in the streets, and he quickly joined in, laughing and making new friends. It was a heartwarming scene, witnessing the universal language of play transcending cultural barriers.

One of the highlights of our tour was a visit to Lawober Lalibela, a local community known for its traditional crafts. We watched artisans at work, creating intricate pottery, weaving colourful textiles, and carving beautiful wooden sculptures. Francisca, with her keen eye for detail, was particularly impressed by the craftsmanship and skill of the artisans. We purchased a few souvenirs, supporting the local economy and bringing home tangible reminders of our experience.

For lunch, we stopped at Segenet cafe and restaurant, a charming eatery known for its authentic Ethiopian cuisine. The aroma of spices filled the air as we entered, and we were greeted with warm smiles from the staff. We ordered a variety of dishes, including injera with different stews, each bursting with flavour. Nilton, surprisingly, enjoyed the vegetarian options, particularly the spicy lentils and the stewed cabbage. Francisca and I savoured the traditional meat dishes, appreciating the unique blend of spices and the tender texture of the meat.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of souvenir shopping at All In One Souvenir & Gift Shop. The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts and artifacts, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Ethiopia. We found unique gifts for our friends and family back home, each item carrying a piece of Lalibela's soul. I picked up a beautiful handwoven scarf for my mother, while Francisca chose a delicate silver necklace. Nilton, of course, gravitated towards the wooden carvings, selecting a small giraffe as a memento of our trip.

As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to a delicious dinner at Ma'ed Lalibela Restaurant. The restaurant was known for its traditional Ethiopian dishes, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the stunning views of the town. The food was exceptional, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Reflecting on our experiences, I'm struck by the thought of how lucky we are to be able to experience Easter Celebrations in Lalibela today, which takes place from April 18-20/2025! It is truly a special time to be in Lalibela, with the whole town coming alive to celebrate. I'm looking forward to witnessing the vibrant ceremonies and immersing ourselves in the spiritual atmosphere.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the natural beauty surrounding Lalibela with Ethiopian Endemic Birdwatching Lalibela and Dan Lalibela Tour Guide Services. I'm particularly excited about the prospect of spotting some rare and unique bird species, as birdwatching is a passion I've always enjoyed. I'm also eager to learn more about the local flora and fauna, gaining a deeper appreciation for the natural wonders of this region. Francisca is looking forward to visiting Ben Abeba for dinner, a restaurant known for its unique architecture and stunning views. Nilton, on the other hand, is most excited about the prospect of having a drink at Sora Lodge Lalibela 4 Stars, where he hopes to sample some local juices and sodas.

Today was a reminder of the beauty and wonder that exists in the world, and the importance of sharing these experiences with loved ones. As we continue our journey through Ethiopia, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement, eager to discover what tomorrow holds. The vibrant culture, the delicious food, and the warm hospitality of the people have captured our hearts, making this trip an unforgettable adventure. I am so happy to share this experience with Francisca and Nilton. It is truly a trip of a lifetime.

I am reminded of a quote by Saint Augustine:

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.
