Exploring the Ancient Marvels of Lalibela with Family
Day 6: Trekking Through Time: Exploring Lalibela's Highlands
Embark on an unforgettable highland trek in Lalibela, Ethiopia, discovering ancient monasteries, and vibrant communities with my family.
Highland Echoes
Today, the sixth day of our Ethiopian adventure, was dedicated to experiencing the natural beauty surrounding Lalibela. We traded the intricate rock-hewn churches for the rolling hills and expansive vistas of the Ethiopian highlands. It was a day of physical exertion, cultural immersion, and breathtaking views that reminded us of the simple joys of travel. Nilton was especially excited to see some wildlife, and Francisca was looking forward to meeting some of the local artisans. I was hoping to find some inspiration for my next Lisbon walking tour, perhaps incorporating some of the stories and traditions I'd learn today.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bisrat Cafe. The aroma of freshly brewed Ethiopian coffee filled the air, mingling with the sweet scent of local pastries. We enjoyed some *firfir*, a spicy stew made from shredded *injera* and seasoned with *berbere*, a staple in Ethiopian cuisine. It was the perfect fuel for our upcoming trek. Bisrat Cafe was indeed a great start to the day, a vibrant place buzzing with locals and tourists alike. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the food was both delicious and authentic. I even managed to pick up a few Amharic phrases from our friendly waiter, adding a little local flavor to my repertoire.

After breakfast, we met our guide from Highland Eco Trekking Tours Ethiopia. He was a local man with an encyclopedic knowledge of the region's flora, fauna, and history. As we set off, leaving the town behind, the landscape transformed dramatically. The dusty streets gave way to green fields, and the air grew crisp and clean. We were immediately enveloped by the serene beauty of the highlands. The views were panoramic, stretching across valleys and plateaus, a patchwork of cultivated land and natural vegetation. It was a welcome change from the close quarters of the rock-hewn churches, offering a sense of freedom and openness.

Our first stop was the Asheten community for an eco-trekking experience. The trek was moderately challenging, with some steep inclines, but the views were more than worth the effort. Along the way, our guide shared fascinating insights into the local ecosystem, pointing out various plants and their medicinal uses. He also explained the traditional farming practices of the communities living in the highlands. It was a privilege to witness their resourcefulness and resilience in the face of challenging environmental conditions. Nilton was particularly fascinated by the Gelada baboons we spotted along the way. He peppered our guide with questions about their behavior and social structure, his curiosity insatiable.

Sometimes, the best way to understand a culture is to walk through its landscapes and meet its people.
As we continued our trek, we passed through several small villages. The locals greeted us with warm smiles and curious glances. Their traditional homes, built from stone and mud, blended seamlessly into the landscape. We stopped at one of the homes for a traditional coffee ceremony. The women of the house roasted the beans over an open fire, then ground them by hand using a mortar and pestle. The aroma of the roasting coffee was intoxicating, filling the air with a rich, earthy fragrance. We sat on small stools, sipping the strong, flavorful coffee from small ceramic cups. It was a moment of genuine connection, a shared experience that transcended language and cultural barriers. Francisca, ever the seamstress, was particularly interested in the intricate patterns of the local textiles. She spent a considerable amount of time admiring the vibrant colors and elaborate designs, exchanging smiles and gestures with the women of the village.
For lunch, we stopped at the Sora Lodge Lalibela. After a morning of trekking, the thought of a delicious meal with a stunning view was incredibly appealing. The Sora Lodge did not disappoint. The restaurant offered a variety of both Ethiopian and international dishes. We opted for a selection of local specialties, including *doro wat* (chicken stew), *shiro wat* (chickpea stew), and *gomen* (collard greens). The food was flavorful and satisfying, and the views from the restaurant were simply breathtaking. The lodge itself seemed to blend seamlessly into the landscape, constructed from local stone and thatch. I made a mental note to consider this place for accommodation on a future trip, perhaps without the kids, for a more romantic getaway with Francisca.

In the late afternoon, we made our way back towards Lalibela. Before heading back to our guesthouse, we made a quick stop at Fikr Juice House. The vibrant colors and refreshing aromas were a welcome treat after a long day of hiking. Nilton, predictably, opted for a mango juice, while Francisca and I decided to try a local specialty made with a blend of guava, papaya, and pineapple. The juice was sweet, tangy, and incredibly refreshing. It was the perfect way to cap off a day of exploration and adventure. I even managed to get a quick lesson in Amharic from the owner, adding a few more phrases to my growing vocabulary.

Our dinner at Lalibela Restaurant was a pleasant end to the day. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were very attentive. We had a selection of vegetarian dishes, all served on a large platter of *injera*. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the skillful use of local spices and herbs. As we ate, we reflected on the day's experiences, sharing our favorite moments and insights. It was a day that had enriched our understanding of Ethiopia, not just its historical sites, but also its natural beauty and the warmth of its people.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Bete Maryam and Biete Qeddus Mercoreus, two more of Lalibela's famed rock-hewn churches. I am particularly looking forward to seeing Bete Maryam, known for its exquisite carvings and intricate details. Francisca is keen to explore Biete Qeddus Mercoreus, which is said to have a unique architectural style. And of course, Nilton is simply excited to see more of these incredible structures. We also plan to visit Roha Gift Shop to pick up some souvenirs for our friends and family back home. It's hard to believe that our trip is drawing to a close. These past few days in Lalibela have been an incredible journey through time and culture, a truly unforgettable experience for all of us.
As I sit here tonight, guitar in hand, strumming a soft *morna* tune under the starlit Ethiopian sky, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had today. The highlands of Lalibela have left an indelible mark on our hearts, reminding us that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with new people and experiencing new cultures. It is about broadening our perspectives and deepening our understanding of the world and our place in it. These are the stories I want to share with the people on my walking tours of Lisbon, the stories that connect us all, no matter where we come from. These are the stories I will cherish for a lifetime.
