Whispers of Faith in Stone

Today in Lalibela felt like stepping deeper into a living history book, or perhaps more accurately, a testament carved in stone. The rock-hewn churches here are more than just architectural marvels; they are vibrant centers of faith, echoing with centuries of prayer and devotion. Francisca and Nilton were equally captivated, and as I reflect on our day, I'm filled with a sense of awe and gratitude for the experiences we shared.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at TG HomeStyle Restaurant. It's a cozy spot, the kind where the aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee welcomes you like an old friend. We fueled up with some local delicacies, injera of course, preparing ourselves for a morning of exploration. Nilton, ever the curious one, peppered me with questions about the churches, their history, and the legends surrounding them. I did my best to answer, drawing from my own knowledge and the guidebook, but I also encouraged him to observe and absorb the atmosphere himself. It's one thing to read about history, but it's another to stand within it.

Our first stop was Bete Maryam, the House of Mary. It's often said to be the oldest of Lalibela's churches, and as we approached, I could feel a palpable sense of history. The exterior is relatively simple, but it’s the interior that truly takes your breath away. The walls are adorned with intricate carvings and paintings, depicting biblical scenes and geometric patterns. The light filtering through the windows cast an ethereal glow on the ancient artwork, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Francisca was particularly moved by the artistry, pointing out details I might have missed. She has such a keen eye for beauty, a trait I’ve always admired.

To truly understand a place, you must not only see its landmarks but also feel its spirit.

One of the most striking features of Bete Maryam is the veiled pillar, said to hold the secrets of humanity's future. Of course, no one is allowed to unveil it, adding to the mystique. Nilton was fascinated by this, whispering about hidden treasures and ancient prophecies. I chuckled, reminding him that the real treasure was the history and the faith that permeated the very stones of the church.

Next, we ventured to Biete Qeddus Mercoreus, dedicated to Saint Mercurius. This church felt different, perhaps a bit more austere, but equally powerful. Legend has it that it was once a royal residence before being transformed into a church. The architecture reflects this history, with elements of both the sacred and the secular blended seamlessly. We spent some time simply sitting in silence, absorbing the atmosphere. It’s moments like these, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, that I truly cherish. They allow me to reconnect with myself and with my family.

For lunch, we found ourselves at Megabi Cafeteria. It was more than just a meal; it was an immersion into local life. The cafeteria was bustling with activity, locals chatting and laughing over plates of traditional Ethiopian food. We sampled a variety of dishes, each bursting with flavor. Nilton, surprisingly, was quite adventurous, trying everything from the spicy stews to the milder vegetarian options. He even made a new friend, a young boy who shared his love for football. It's these spontaneous connections that make travel so enriching, breaking down barriers and reminding us of our shared humanity.

In the afternoon, we decided to do a bit of shopping. I was hoping to find a special souvenir, something that would remind me of our time in Lalibela. We stumbled upon Roha Gift Shop, a treasure trove of Ethiopian handicrafts. From intricately woven baskets to colorful textiles and hand-carved wooden artifacts, the shop was a feast for the senses. I ended up buying a beautiful silver cross, a symbol of faith and a reminder of the spiritual journey we were undertaking. Francisca found a delicate scarf, woven with traditional patterns, and Nilton chose a small wooden carving of a lion, the symbol of Ethiopia.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Shalom Cafe for dinner. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. We enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Ethiopian dishes, savoring the flavors and reflecting on our experiences. The cafe was a great place to unwind, with a lively atmosphere. I took the opportunity to try some Tej, a local honey wine. It was sweet and potent, a perfect end to a perfect day.

Reflecting on today, I'm struck by the power of faith and the enduring legacy of Lalibela. These rock-hewn churches are not just historical monuments; they are living, breathing centers of spirituality, testaments to the ingenuity and devotion of the Ethiopian people. Sharing this experience with Francisca and Nilton has made it even more meaningful. Seeing the wonder in their eyes, hearing their questions, and feeling their connection to this sacred place has filled my heart with joy.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Beta Gabriel Raphael and Bete Abba Libanos. I've heard that Beta Gabriel Raphael may have once been a royal residence, and Bete Abba Libanos is said to have been built in a single night by angels, with a hole in the wall that lets light shine into the chapel. I am also hoping we can enjoy a drink at Kana Restaurant and Bar. Each church holds its own unique story, and I am eager to uncover more of Lalibela's secrets. As we prepare for our final days in Ethiopia, I'm filled with a sense of anticipation for what lies ahead, and a deep gratitude for the experiences we've shared so far. Even though I forgot the portable phone charger and sunscreen, we have made it so far. I am eager to see what tomorrow holds and to continue sharing our adventure with you all.

It's been an incredible journey so far, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. But for now, it's time to rest, recharge, and dream of ancient churches and the whispers of faith in stone.

Until tomorrow,

Domingos
