A Journey Through Time and Faith

Today was a day of deep exploration, a day where the past felt incredibly present. Francisca, Nilton, and I ventured into the heart of the Moulay Idriss region, eager to absorb the history and culture that permeated every stone and alleyway. From ancient Roman ruins to sacred Islamic sites, our senses were constantly engaged, and our minds filled with stories of Morocco's rich heritage.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk مقهى و مطعم عين زواق. The strong coffee and warm bread fueled us for the adventures ahead. Nilton was particularly excited, bouncing in his seat as we discussed our plans for the day. He loves exploring new places, and his enthusiasm is infectious. As someone who enjoys history, I was eager to explore the ancient city of Zerhoun.

The air was crisp and clean as we set off towards Zerhoun. The views were simply breathtaking. The rolling hills, dotted with olive groves and fields of wheat, stretched out before us like a patchwork quilt. It was easy to imagine life here centuries ago, unchanged by the passage of time. The temperature was mild, around 17°C, perfect for a day of walking and exploring. The clear skies promised a day filled with sunshine and discovery.

Arriving in Zerhoun, we were immediately struck by its serene atmosphere. The town, spread over two hills at the base of Mount Zerhoun, seemed to whisper tales of its long and storied past. As we wandered through the narrow streets, I couldn't help but think of my own ancestors, the stories they carried, and the journeys they undertook. It's a powerful feeling, connecting with history in such a tangible way.

We spent a good portion of the morning exploring Zerhoun, soaking in the atmosphere and learning about its significance. The town is famous for being the site of the tomb of Idris I, the first major Islamic ruler of Morocco, after whom the town is named. The mausoleum of Moulay Idriss is a major pilgrimage site for Moroccans, considered second only to Mecca in its holiness. Unfortunately, as non-Muslims, we couldn't enter the mausoleum itself, but we could still appreciate its grandeur from the outside and observe the devout pilgrims who came to pay their respects. The architecture was stunning, a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the artisans who built it.

The beauty of a place lies not only in its sights but in the stories it whispers to those who listen.

Next on our itinerary was Bab Rmila Natural Park.

After the cultural immersion of Zerhoun, we were ready for a dose of nature. The drive to Bab Rmila was scenic, taking us through winding roads and past lush landscapes. The park itself is a haven of tranquility, a place where one can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with the natural world.

Bab Rmila Natural Park is located about 10 kilometers from Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. As we entered the park, we were greeted by the sight of verdant forests and rolling hills. The air was filled with the scent of pine and eucalyptus, and the sounds of birds chirping in the trees. Nilton was in his element, running ahead on the trails, eager to discover what lay around each bend. Francisca and I followed at a more leisurely pace, enjoying the peace and quiet of our surroundings. I thought about how much Nilton reminds me of myself when I was his age, always curious, always exploring. I hope he continues to carry that spirit with him throughout his life.

We spent a couple of hours hiking in Bab Rmila, exploring the various trails and taking in the stunning views. The park is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, and we were lucky enough to spot several different species of birds. It was a perfect opportunity to disconnect from technology and simply appreciate the beauty of nature. Francisca, ever the observant one, pointed out various plants and flowers, sharing her knowledge of their medicinal properties. It's moments like these that make our family trips so special.

For lunch, we decided to try Roman City restaurant.

Situated near the Roman ruins of Volubilis, it seemed like the perfect spot to enjoy a meal while soaking in the history of the area. The restaurant had a charming, rustic ambiance, and the staff were warm and welcoming. We ordered a variety of Moroccan dishes, including tagine and couscous, and everything was delicious. Nilton, surprisingly, devoured his tagine, declaring it the best meal he'd had so far on the trip. Francisca and I shared a bottle of local wine, savoring the flavors and the moment. It was a delightful culinary experience that perfectly complemented our day of exploration.

After lunch, we made our way to Dar Moulay Idriss.

This historical landmark in the heart of Moulay Idriss is named after the revered figure Moulay Idriss, who played a pivotal role in the spread of Islam in Morocco. Though some sources mention Dar Moulay Idriss being located in Marrakech, the Dar in Moulay Idriss Zerhoun held its own charm and significance. The architecture was stunning, with intricate tile work and ornate stucco detailing. We wandered through the serene courtyards, taking in the peaceful atmosphere and admiring the craftsmanship of the artisans who built it. It was a truly enriching experience, a chance to connect with the spiritual and cultural heritage of Morocco.

Our final stop of the day was Cafe machhour, a local bar where we decided to unwind and reflect on our adventures.

We sipped on mint tea, a staple of Moroccan hospitality, and watched as locals gathered to chat and socialize. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and we felt a sense of belonging, as if we were part of the community. Nilton, tired from our day of exploring, fell asleep in my arms, his face peaceful and content. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the hills of Moulay Idriss, we made our way back to our accommodation. The drive was quiet and contemplative, each of us lost in our own thoughts. I reflected on the day's experiences, the history we had absorbed, the beauty we had witnessed, and the connections we had made. It was a day that would stay with us for a long time, a reminder of the power of travel to broaden our horizons and deepen our understanding of the world.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Haroune Aqueduct, Lahdim Square, and Kasabah Senhaji in the surrounding area. I'm particularly excited about visiting the aqueduct, as I'm always fascinated by ancient engineering marvels. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure.

The weather forecast for tomorrow predicts mostly sunny conditions, with temperatures between 13°C and 29°C. It sounds like another perfect day for exploring the Moulay Idriss region. I made sure to pack sunscreen and sunglasses, remembering the items we had forgotten at home. Hopefully, we'll be better prepared tomorrow.

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with you. Travel is not just about seeing new places; it's about connecting with different cultures, learning about history, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. And it's about sharing those experiences with the people you love. I'm so grateful to have Francisca and Nilton by my side on this journey, and I look forward to sharing many more adventures with them in the days and years to come.
