Discover Bolgatanga's vibrant culture, savor local dishes, and explore hidden gems with my family on our unforgettable Ghanaian adventure.
Finding the Heart of Bolga
Today, the seventh day of our Ghanaian adventure, was all about diving deeper into the heart of Bolgatanga. With Francisca and Nilton by my side, I was eager to explore more of this vibrant town and experience its culture firsthand. We had a packed itinerary, including visits to local landmarks, culinary experiences, and a bit of shopping. Although I missed my daily dose of genealogy, the allure of Bolga's culture was enough to make me put it aside for a day.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Wintex Plaza. The aroma of local spices filled the air, promising a delightful start to our culinary journey. I opted for their signature dish, which incorporated local spices and flavors. Francisca and Nilton chose a more familiar breakfast, but they enjoyed the Ghanaian twist. Wintex Plaza had a spacious dining area adorned with warm decor reflecting the local culture. The friendly staff was always on hand to recommend dishes or share insights about local customs and traditions. It was more than just a meal; it was an immersion into Bolgatanga's vibrant culture.

After breakfast, we decided to start our exploration at Abole Junction. I read it was a premier hiking destination, and after so much driving I wanted to stretch my legs. Nilton was especially excited to explore a new place. Abole Junction turned out to be a bustling transportation hub, a crossroads where different paths converged. We took a short walk around the area, observing the local life and soaking in the atmosphere. It was a great way to get a sense of the town's energy. I made a mental note to come back another day for a proper hike.

Next on our list was the Ghana Tourism Authority. As a tour guide myself, I was curious to see how they promote tourism in the Upper East Region. The staff was very helpful, providing us with information about local attractions such as the Tongo Hills and the vibrant markets where artisans display their crafts. I was particularly interested in learning more about the local crafts, as I wanted to buy some souvenirs for our friends and family back in Lisbon. The Ghana Tourism Authority is dedicated to promoting tourism and providing essential information for visitors. The office was located near the Upper East Regional Library and the Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral.

For lunch, we headed to House Party, a restaurant known for its warm and inviting ambiance and traditional Ghanaian cuisine. We indulged in local delicacies like fufu and groundnut soup, savoring the rich flavors of the region. The restaurant's design reflected the vibrant culture of Bolgatanga, adorned with local art and decor. What stood out to me was that House Party is frequented by locals, providing us with an authentic taste of everyday life in Bolgatanga. It wasn't just about eating; it was about connecting with the community and experiencing the hospitality that Ghana is known for.

After our delightful lunch, we dedicated our afternoon to shopping at the Delwende shopping center. Francisca was in her element, browsing through the colorful fabrics and unique jewelry. Nilton was fascinated by the intricate beadwork and woven baskets. I was on the lookout for vintage postcards, but I couldn't find any. We ended up buying a few woven baskets and some beads as souvenirs. I am sure Francisca will find a use for them in her sewing. Bolgatanga is known as the crafts center of northern Ghana, and it certainly lived up to its reputation.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at the New Life Line Drinking Bar. It was a lively establishment where locals and tourists gathered to enjoy refreshing beverages and a vibrant atmosphere. The interior was adorned with local art, creating an inviting ambiance. Live music filled the air, enhancing the lively experience. I enjoyed a local brew while Francisca and Nilton sipped on some soft drinks. It was a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. The New Life Line Drinking Bar is not just a place to grab a drink; it's a hub of social activity where live music often fills the air, enhancing the lively experience. It was an accessible choice for all travelers looking to enjoy a taste of local nightlife. The bar stays open late, allowing you to enjoy the night and soak in the local atmosphere.

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. Immersing ourselves in the local culture, savoring the local cuisine, and connecting with the local people is what makes travel so rewarding. Bolgatanga has a unique charm that has captivated us. I am looking forward to our final day in Bolgatanga tomorrow, where we plan to visit Tongo: Upper East Region (Ghana) and do some last-minute souvenir shopping at Fonky Books and Stationery. I am curious to see what Tongo has in store for us. I've heard it has breathtaking rock formations and a rich cultural heritage. It will be a bittersweet moment, as we prepare to say goodbye to this beautiful town and its warm-hearted people.
