Farewell, Bolgatanga!

As our eight-day family adventure in Ghana draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared. Today was all about embracing the cultural heart of the Upper East Region, venturing into the sacred landscapes of Tongo:upper East region (Ghana) and soaking in the local Bolgatanga atmosphere one last time. It's amazing how quickly a place can feel like home, and leaving is always bittersweet.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Sanat Minat. Francisca opted for a traditional Ghanaian breakfast of waakye (rice and beans), while Nilton, ever the adventurous eater, decided to try some too. I enjoyed a simple omelet, savoring the last tastes of Bolgatanga before we set off for Tongo. I always find that the simple act of sharing a meal together sets the tone for the day, creating a sense of togetherness and anticipation for what lies ahead.

The drive to Tongo:upper East region (Ghana) was an experience in itself. The landscape transformed as we left Bolgatanga, with rocky hills emerging from the savanna. I couldn't help but think of my childhood in Cabo Verde, where similar landscapes evoked a sense of wonder and connection to the earth. Nilton was captivated, pointing out the different rock formations and asking endless questions about how they were formed. I tried my best to explain the geological processes at play, but I suspect he was more interested in imagining them as giant sleeping animals. The Tongo Hills are known for their unique rock formations, sacred sites, and the traditional beliefs of the local Talensi people.

Upon arriving in Tongo, we were immediately struck by the area's rich cultural and spiritual significance. The Tongo Hills, with their striking granite rock formations, are not only visually stunning but also considered sacred by the local Talensi people. We hired a local guide who shared stories about the history and traditions associated with the hills, explaining how the area is believed to be inhabited by ancestral spirits. It was fascinating to learn about the rituals and sacrifices that are still performed here, seeking blessings and guidance from the ancestors. The Tengzug Shrine, nestled within the hills, is a particularly important religious site, and while we respected the local customs by not taking photographs, the experience of being there was deeply moving.

Visiting Tongo is not just about sightseeing; it's about immersing yourself in the rich tapestry of Ghanaian culture.

Nilton was especially intrigued by the Tongo Whistling Rocks, marveling at the melodious sounds created when the wind weaves through the crevices. He even tried to create his own whistling sounds, much to the amusement of our guide. I was personally drawn to the serene valleys and dramatic cliffs, which provided a perfect backdrop for reflection. As someone who finds solace in nature, I felt a profound sense of peace in this unique landscape. Francisca, with her keen eye for detail, was fascinated by the intricate patterns and textures of the rocks, commenting on how they seemed to tell a story of their own.

Leaving Tongo, we headed back to Bolgatanga for lunch at GANASS HOTEL. The hotel, located on the Bolgatanga-Tamale Road, offered a welcome respite from the heat, and we enjoyed a delicious meal of local and international cuisine. Nilton, predictably, opted for jollof rice, while Francisca and I decided to try some guinea fowl, a local delicacy. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and we appreciated the chance to recharge before our final activity of the day.

Our last stop in Bolgatanga was Fonky Books and Stationery. As a lover of literature and a collector of vintage postcards, I was eager to explore this local gem. The store was a treasure trove of books, art supplies, and unique stationery items, and I spent a happy hour browsing the shelves. Nilton, surprisingly, was equally captivated, drawn to the colorful art supplies and the selection of local children's books. Francisca, always on the lookout for unique gifts, found some beautifully crafted notebooks to take back to her seamstress shop in Lisbon. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, recommending local authors and sharing stories about the Bolgatanga literary scene.

After our visit to Fonky Books and Stationery, we decided to have a quiet dinner at LA PAIX Lodge. We wanted somewhere relaxing to reflect on our trip. The cozy atmosphere of the lodge was the perfect setting for our final meal in Bolgatanga. We enjoyed some traditional dishes while discussing our favorite moments from the past eight days. Nilton recounted his adventures in the local markets, Francisca reminisced about the vibrant crafts we had seen, and I shared my appreciation for the rich history and culture we had encountered. It was a fitting end to our family cultural adventure.

As I write this, we're preparing for our journey back to Lisbon tomorrow. While I'm eager to return to my familiar walking tours and Francisca is looking forward to her sewing, I know we'll all carry a piece of Bolgatanga with us. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been an immersion into a different way of life, a chance to connect with a vibrant culture, and an opportunity to create lasting memories with my family. I encourage anyone seeking an authentic travel experience to consider visiting Bolgatanga. It's a place that will stay with you long after you've left.

This trip to Bolgatanga has enriched my understanding of Ghana and its people. The warmth and resilience of the community, the beauty of the landscape, and the depth of the culture have left an indelible mark on my soul. I'm already looking forward to the day when we can return and continue exploring this fascinating region. Perhaps next time, we'll venture further into the Upper East Region and discover even more hidden gems.

Until then, I'll cherish the memories we've made and continue to share my experiences with others through my blog. After all, travel is not just about seeing new places; it's about opening our hearts and minds to new perspectives and creating connections that transcend borders. And that, to me, is the true essence of exploration. I am looking forward to sharing more travel stories with you all soon!
