Day 2: A Day of Blue Hues and Mountain Views in Chefchaouen
Immerse yourself in Chefchaouen's blue streets, explore Plaza Uta el-Hamman, hike in Parc National de Talassemtane, and savor local cuisine.
Into the Blue Heart of Chefchaouen
Today was a day of diving deeper into the cerulean dream that is Chefchaouen. The color here is more than just paint; it's a feeling, a mood that seeps into your soul and leaves you breathless. After a delightful first day, I was eager to explore more of this captivating town and its stunning natural surroundings.
Our morning began with breakfast at Le Coin. The restaurant had a cozy interior with traditional decor, which created a warm atmosphere to relax and enjoy our meal. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast of eggs, fresh croissants, olives, and homemade jam. The coffee was truly the best I’ve had in a while. Fuelled up, we set off to explore Plaza Uta el Hamman.

Plaza Uta el Hamman is the heart of Chefchaouen, a bustling square filled with the sounds of laughter and lively chatter. The plaza is the main cobblestoned esplanade designed with Arabian and Spanish influences. Surrounded by blue-washed buildings, it was the perfect place to soak in the local culture. The square is lined with local shops and cafés. The atmosphere was incredible. We spent some time simply sitting and people-watching, enjoying the vibrant energy of the square.
After soaking in the atmosphere of Plaza Uta el Hamman, we decided to venture into nature with a visit to Parc National de Talassemtane.

The park is a short distance from Chefchaouen, making it an easy escape from the town's bustling center. The drive itself was scenic, with winding roads offering glimpses of the stunning Rif Mountains.
We chose a moderate hiking trail that promised panoramic views. The trail was well-marked, and as we ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking. The park is home to diverse wildlife, but we didn't spot any of the Barbary macaques this time. The fresh mountain air and the stunning vistas were a welcome change of pace. The trails led to viewpoints with panoramic vistas of hilly landscapes carpeted with forests and dotted with waterfalls.
The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not only in its striking blue hues but also in its ability to offer both cultural immersion and natural escapes.
After our hike, hunger called, and we headed to Restaurant Triana for lunch.

The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, decorated with intricate mosaics and vibrant colors. I decided to try their signature lamb tagine, slow-cooked to perfection with aromatic spices. Hans-Peter opted for fresh seafood. The friendly staff were eager to share insights about the local cuisine. The restaurant also boasts an impressive selection of Moroccan wines and refreshing mint tea.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Bar Oum Rabie for a relaxing evening.

This bar is one of the few places in Chefchaouen that serves alcohol. We ordered some local wine and enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere. With each drink, they offered us homemade tapas. The bar was filled with locals, creating a festive and welcoming environment. The view from the bar was lovely, overlooking the Grand Mosque.
For dinner, we chose Restaurant Al Wiam, drawn in by its reputation for authentic Moroccan cuisine.
