A day of hiking, history, and culinary delights in Chefchaouen, exploring mountain summits and hidden corners with friends.
High Peaks and Hidden Gates: A Day of Discovery in Chefchaouen
Today was a day of contrasts, a vibrant tapestry woven with challenging hikes, historical explorations, and the simple joy of sharing good food with friends. From the demanding ascent of Jebel El-Kelaa to the serene wanderings through Bab Chaouen and culminating in the lively ambiance of Cafe Clock, Chefchaouen revealed itself in layers, each more captivating than the last.
Our day began with an ambitious plan: to conquer Jebel El-Kelaa, the mountain overlooking Chefchaouen. I woke up with that familiar mix of excitement and slight apprehension that always accompanies a challenging hike. I made sure to have a hearty breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream. I opted for a cheese crepe, remembering Miriam's friendly service from my last visit. The combination of the warmth of the crepe and the sweetness of the cheese was the perfect fuel for the adventure ahead. My friends and I gathered our essentials – water, sunscreen, and of course, my camera – before setting off. I realized, with a pang of annoyance, that I had forgotten my travel adapter back at Hotel Casa Miguel; a rookie mistake, especially for someone as usually organized as myself! I made a mental note to pick one up tomorrow.

The initial part of the hike was gentle, a winding path that gradually inclined, allowing us to warm up our muscles and soak in the picturesque scenery. The higher we climbed, the more rugged the terrain became, with rocks strewn across the path, demanding careful footing. I was grateful for my sturdy hiking shoes, a far cry from the sandals I sometimes favour in Leipzig! As we ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of Chefchaouen's blue-washed buildings nestled amidst the Rif Mountains. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. Despite the moderate difficulty of the hike, with some steep and slippery sections, the well-marked trails made it manageable. I was reminded of hiking in the Saxon Switzerland National Park near Leipzig, although the landscape here was distinctly Moroccan.
The view from the summit was a reward in itself, a breathtaking panorama that stretched as far as the eye could see.
Reaching the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa was exhilarating. The sense of accomplishment was palpable as we stood there, catching our breath and gazing at the world below. The city looked like a child's toy, a miniature world of blue hues and winding streets. I could spot Bab Chaouen in the distance, a reminder of our next destination. We spent a good hour at the summit, taking photos and simply enjoying the tranquility. The descent was equally challenging, requiring careful navigation and a steady pace. We followed the blue dots painted on the rocks, a helpful guide amidst the multiple paths.
Back in Chefchaouen, we decided to immerse ourselves in the town's rich history and culture by exploring Bab Chaouen. As we wandered through the narrow, winding streets, I felt transported back in time. The vibrant blue buildings, a hallmark of Chefchaouen, created a dreamlike atmosphere, a haven for photographers and travelers alike. The intricate metalwork on the doors, the colorful tiles adorning the walls, and the overall architectural details spoke volumes about the town's diverse influences – Andalusian, Arab, and Berber. I couldn't help but feel a connection to my own Greek heritage, a sense of shared history and cultural exchange that has shaped the Mediterranean region for centuries.

Bab Chaouen, founded in the 15th century, is more than just a pretty facade; it's a living testament to Moroccan history and culture. As we strolled through the area, we encountered local markets brimming with handmade crafts, textiles, and traditional souvenirs. The air was filled with the aroma of spices and the sounds of bartering, a sensory feast that invigorated my senses. I picked up a small, hand-painted ceramic bowl, a reminder of the vibrant colors of Chefchaouen. We also passed by Bab Souk, one of the main gates to the old city, known for its Monday market. It was fascinating to imagine the bustling trade that once took place here, connecting Chefchaouen with other major cities.
For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Ali Baba, drawn in by the promise of authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant had a warm atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I opted for the vegetable tagine, a flavorful stew of seasonal vegetables simmered in aromatic spices. It was a delightful culinary experience, a perfect blend of taste and texture. My friends enjoyed their meals as well, praising the couscous and the chicken skewers. Although some reviews online are mixed, our experience was overwhelmingly positive.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Cafe Clock, a popular spot known for its live music and cultural events. The cafe had a lively ambiance, with vibrant tiles, traditional furnishings, and a rooftop terrace offering stunning views of the city. I ordered a refreshing mint tea, a staple of Moroccan hospitality, and we settled in to enjoy the music. Tonight was Oud Music with Jamal, and the melodies filled the air with a sense of magic. I was reminded of the music nights in Livadeia, where local musicians would gather to play traditional Greek songs. The universality of music, its ability to transcend cultural boundaries, never ceases to amaze me.

Before the music started, we had dinner at Cafe Clock. I decided to be adventurous and try their famous camel burger. It was surprisingly delicious, a unique culinary experience that I would highly recommend. My friends tried the tagine and the couscous, both of which were equally impressive. Cafe Clock is more than just a restaurant; it's a cultural hub that brings together locals and tourists alike. The friendly staff, the vibrant atmosphere, and the authentic Moroccan cuisine make it a must-visit spot in Chefchaouen.
As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Chefchaouen has revealed itself to me in all its beauty and complexity. From the challenging hike to the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa to the serene wanderings through Bab Chaouen and culminating in the lively ambiance of Cafe Clock, every moment has been a treasure.
