Solo Cultural Journey Through Kyoto
Day 7: Kyoto's Cultural Heart: Manga, Castles, and Hidden Corridors
Discover Kyoto's diverse charm: from the artistic allure of manga to the historic grandeur of Nijō Castle and secret flower spots.
A Day of Cultural Immersion in Kyoto
Today was a delightful exploration of Kyoto's diverse cultural offerings. From the historical grandeur of a castle to the whimsical world of manga and a secret floral escape, Kyoto continues to surprise and enchant me. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling solo – the freedom to dive headfirst into whatever sparks my interest, without compromise.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. Opting for a traditional Japanese breakfast, I savored the delicate flavors and fresh ingredients. It was a perfect start, fueling me for a day of exploration.
Stepping Back in Time at Nijō Castle
Nijō Castle was my first stop, and it was nothing short of majestic. The sheer scale of the place is impressive, and the intricate details of the architecture tell stories of a bygone era. Walking through the Ninomaru Palace, I couldn’t help but imagine the Shoguns who once walked these very halls. The ‘nightingale floors’ were particularly fascinating – designed to chirp with every step, they served as an ingenious security system.
The gardens were equally stunning, a serene landscape of meticulously placed stones and perfectly pruned trees. Despite the chill in the air, the beauty of the surroundings was undeniable. I spent a good couple of hours wandering through the castle grounds, soaking in the history and the peaceful atmosphere. It’s amazing to think that the Nijo-jo Castle Sakura Festival will be held from March 14th to April 13th. I'm a little early to see it, but I hear there are nighttime illuminations that will transform the castle into an enchanting night sakura experience. I might have to come back!

Diving into the World of Manga
Next on my list was the Kyoto International Manga Museum. As a translator, I’ve always appreciated the power of storytelling, and manga is a unique and vibrant form of narrative art. Housed in a former elementary school, the museum is a treasure trove of comics, with shelves upon shelves of manga to explore.
I spent hours browsing the collection, discovering new artists and revisiting old favorites. The museum also had exhibits on the history of manga and its cultural impact, which I found incredibly insightful. It was fascinating to see how manga has evolved over the years and how it has influenced art and culture around the world. I even considered getting a souvenir portrait drawn by one of the resident artists, but decided to save that for another visit. I also learned that the museum is preserving and utilizing manga, anime, and games, and that there are roughly 3,000 items in the museum shop, including original goods and manga materials.

A Hidden Gem: The Flower Corridor
Seeking a bit of tranquility, I ventured to The Flower Corridor, a place I had read about in a local guide. Tucked away from the main tourist paths, this hidden gem was a delightful surprise. The corridor was a riot of color, with various flowers blooming in abundance. It was a feast for the senses, and the air was filled with the sweet fragrance of blossoms. I was a little early for the full bloom, but the promise of what was to come was evident.
I spent a peaceful hour wandering through the corridor, taking photos and simply enjoying the beauty of nature. It was a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, a reminder to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life.

Shopping and Sipping in Sanjo
With the afternoon sun casting long shadows, I made my way to the Sanjo Meiten-gai Shopping Arcade. This covered arcade was a vibrant mix of traditional shops and modern boutiques, offering everything from local crafts to trendy fashion. I enjoyed browsing the various stores, picking up a few souvenirs for Astrid and Maximilian back home. It was interesting to learn that the Sanjo Meiten-gai is located near Sanjo Station and offers a variety of traditional Japanese souvenirs, crafts, and local goods, often with a focus on Kyoto's rich cultural history.

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to a pre-dinner drink at Turquoise Bar. The bar had a cozy and stylish atmosphere, and the bartender was a master of his craft. I ordered a custom cocktail, and it was the perfect blend of flavors – a refreshing and sophisticated concoction that set the tone for the evening. I found out that it is known as the couldn't get into L'escamoteur bar, but is very good in its own right and has a wide whisky selection and good cocktails. The bartender was very knowledgeable and made things based on my preferences. He even had good seasonal drinks, and the aesthetic was great.

A Culinary Finale
For dinner, I had made a reservation at Premium Pound Gion, a teppanyaki restaurant known for its high-quality beef. The experience was exceptional – the chef cooked right in front of me, showcasing his skill and artistry. The Wagyu beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with every bite. The attentive service and intimate atmosphere added to the overall experience.

Premium Pound Gion is located in the hidden place inside of Gion area, and the restaurant has a Kyoto-style calm external appearance and interior. All of the seats are counter seats, and food is served over the counter as Teppanyaki style, which allowed me to see a wide variety of cooking techniques performed by the chef from any seat. I was lucky enough to be able to have the A5 Wagyu Fillet Steak Lunch Course, which included a series of appetizers, a succulent Wagyu fillet, and a delightful dessert to conclude the meal. It was truly a bucket list dining experience, with the melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu and the skillful teppanyaki preparation leaving a lasting impression. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable culinary experience in Kyoto.
Reflections on the Day and Anticipation for Tomorrow
As I walked back to Gion Misen Furumonzen, I reflected on the day's adventures. Kyoto had once again exceeded my expectations, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this amazing city and to share my experiences with you all.
