Discovering Kyoto's Hidden Gems
Today was a day of quiet contemplation and artistic discovery, a perfect blend of Kyoto's serene beauty and its dedication to preserving traditional crafts. It was a day to wander, to learn, and to simply be present in the moment, letting the spirit of Kyoto seep into my soul.
My day began with a comforting breakfast at Kyoto Japan, a small and inviting spot that set the tone for the day ahead. Fuelled and ready, I set out to explore the wonders that Kyoto had in store for me today.
My first stop was Kodaiji Temple, a place steeped in history and tranquility. The temple, established in 1606 by Nene, the widow of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, in memory of her late husband, exuded a sense of peace that was palpable. Wandering through the temple grounds, I was struck by the beauty of the gardens, designed by Kobori Enshu. The rock garden, representing the vast ocean, was particularly captivating, inviting quiet contemplation. The crisp March air, though carrying a hint of winter's chill, was refreshing as I explored every corner of this historical site. Although part of the temple hall is currently being reconstructed, it barely impacted my visit.

The temple is more than just a beautiful structure; it's a testament to love and remembrance. Nene's devotion to Hideyoshi is evident in every detail of the temple, from the lavish interiors to the meticulously maintained gardens. It reminded me of the enduring bond Hans-Peter and I share, a connection that has deepened over the years through shared experiences and mutual respect. I thought of him back in Berlin, carefully restoring a piece of antique furniture, his hands working with the same dedication and care that the artisans of Kodaiji poured into their craft centuries ago.
The beauty of Kyoto lies not only in its historical landmarks but also in its ability to evoke a sense of timelessness and serenity.
Leaving Kodaiji, I made my way to Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, a sprawling green space that was once the exclusive domain of the imperial family. Today, it's a place for everyone to enjoy, a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city. As I strolled through the garden, I imagined the emperors and empresses who once walked these paths, their lives steeped in tradition and ceremony. It was fascinating to learn that Emperor Meiji initiated the Kyoto Gyoen Garden—Preservation Project to preserve the area after the capital was moved to Tokyo.

The garden is vast, encompassing the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Kyoto Omiya Palace, and Kyoto Sento Imperial Palace. It's a place where history and nature intertwine, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. I paused by a tranquil pond, watching the koi glide effortlessly through the water, their vibrant colors a stark contrast to the muted tones of the surrounding landscape. The bare branches of the trees reached towards the sky, promising the arrival of spring and the blossoming of cherry blossoms that Kyoto is so famous for. I made a mental note to remind myself to return to Kyoto in a couple of weeks to witness the full bloom.
After a refreshing walk, I headed for lunch at Hyoto Shijo Karasuma, a restaurant known for its refined Kyoto cuisine. The meal was a delicate balance of flavors and textures, a testament to the artistry of Japanese cooking. I savored every bite, appreciating the attention to detail that went into each dish. It was a culinary experience that nourished not only my body but also my soul.

My afternoon was dedicated to exploring the unique world of Japanese textile art at the Kyoto Shibori Museum. Shibori, the ancient art of tie-dyeing, is a craft that has been passed down through generations, and the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into its history and techniques. I was captivated by the intricate patterns and vibrant colors of the shibori fabrics on display. The museum is the only one in Japan specializing in the tie-dye theme, and I was able to enjoy techniques and results via special exhibitions and film footage.

I learned that shibori dates back some 1,300 years and has captivated a large following over the centuries. What struck me most was the dedication and skill required to create these intricate designs. Each piece is a work of art, a testament to the patience and creativity of the artisans who practice this ancient craft. I was particularly drawn to a kimono that looked grey from a distance, but a closer inspection revealed that the fabric was covered in tiny shibori produced dots.
Inspired by the artistry I had witnessed, I decided to participate in one of the museum's workshops. Under the guidance of a skilled instructor, I learned the basics of shibori and created my own tie-dyed scarf. It was a challenging but rewarding experience, and I left the museum with a newfound appreciation for this unique art form. The process reminded me of my own work as an archivist, carefully preserving historical documents and artifacts for future generations. Just as the shibori artisans meticulously tie and dye their fabrics, I meticulously catalog and preserve the records of the past, ensuring that they are not lost to time.
As evening approached, I sought out a place to unwind and reflect on the day's experiences. Bar Cordon Noir, a cozy establishment known for its extensive selection of Japanese whisky, proved to be the perfect choice. Located on the third floor of an office building, it felt like a hidden gem, a place where locals and travelers alike could gather to enjoy a quiet drink and good conversation. I decided to try a Japanese whisky, and the bartender, a friendly and knowledgeable woman, guided me through the various options. I settled on a Kirin Fuji Gotemba Single Grain Blender's Choice 2015, which had dates and brown sugar on the nose with coconut vanilla crème brûlée palate. The whisky was smooth and flavorful, a perfect complement to the cozy atmosphere of the bar.

It was a day that had deepened my appreciation for Japanese culture and had reminded me of the importance of preserving the traditions of the past. I thought of Hans-Peter again, and I knew that he would have loved this day as much as I did. We share a passion for history and craftsmanship, and I couldn't wait to share my experiences with him when I returned to Berlin.
Before heading back to the Ryokan, I enjoyed a delightful dinner at Khaos Spice Diner. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with cultural exploration and artistic discovery.
