Day 9: A Day of Serenity and Culinary Delights in Kyoto
Explore Kyoto's serene temples and vibrant culinary scene. A day of cultural immersion and gastronomic adventures awaits in Japan's ancient capital.
Kyoto's Quiet Charms
Today was a day of exploring Kyoto's spiritual side, intertwined with the city's exquisite culinary offerings. It’s amazing how much history and flavor can be packed into a single day, and I’m eager to share my experiences.
The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Kikuichimonjushirokanenaga honten. I savored a traditional Japanese breakfast, a delightful array of small dishes that energized me for the day's adventures. The subtle flavors and textures were a gentle awakening for the senses, a far cry from my usual Berlin fare, but a welcome change that set the tone for a day of cultural immersion.

Our first stop was Tofuku-ji Temple, a Zen temple founded in 1236. The sheer scale of the place was impressive, and I wandered through its gardens. Although it's February, and the vibrant colors of autumn were long gone, there was still a stark beauty in the bare branches and the meticulously raked gravel gardens. I found myself contemplating the temple's history. It has been rebuilt several times after fires, each time rising from the ashes, embodying resilience and renewal. The Sanmon Gate, a national treasure, stood majestically against the clear winter sky, a testament to the enduring spirit of Japanese craftsmanship.

From the solemnity of Tofuku-ji, I ventured to the colorful Yasaka Kōshin-dō Temple. This small temple was a riot of colors, a stark contrast to the Zen gardens. It’s dedicated to Kōshin-san, a protective warrior from Taoism, and the three wise monkeys. The temple is adorned with kukurizaru, colorful fabric balls on which visitors write their wishes. The vibrant scene was incredibly photogenic, and I couldn't resist taking a few pictures. It was fascinating to learn that the Kōshin faith integrates elements from Buddhism, Taoism, and Shintoism, reflecting Japan's unique ability to blend traditions.

In the heart of Kyoto, history whispers through ancient temples and explodes in a kaleidoscope of colors, offering a sensory feast that nourishes both the soul and the palate.
Next on the itinerary was Maruyama Park. Once part of the Yasaka Shrine, it transformed into a public park in 1886. Though it is February, I could imagine the park bursting with life during cherry blossom season. I strolled along the winding paths, enjoying the tranquility of the winter landscape. The bare trees had a certain elegance, their branches reaching towards the sky like intricate ink drawings. I paused by a small pond, reflecting on the park's history and its role as a gathering place for locals and tourists alike.

For lunch, I indulged in a kaiseki meal at Gion Nanba. Each course was a work of art, a delicate balance of flavors and textures that showcased the best of Kyoto's cuisine. The chef's attention to detail was remarkable, and I savored every bite. It was an experience that transcended mere sustenance, a true celebration of Japanese culinary artistry.

After lunch, I decided to do some shopping at the Daimaru Kyoto Store. It was a delightful experience, browsing through the various departments and admiring the quality of the goods on offer. The basement food floor was a particular highlight, a veritable feast for the senses. I picked up a few souvenirs for Hans-Peter and myself, little reminders of my time in Kyoto.

As evening approached, I made my way to French Dining Top of Kyoto for dinner. Located on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto, this revolving restaurant offered panoramic views of the city. As the restaurant slowly rotated, I marveled at the glittering cityscape below. The French cuisine was excellent, a harmonious blend of classic techniques and local ingredients. It was a delightful way to end a day of cultural exploration, a moment of quiet contemplation amidst the vibrant energy of Kyoto.
