Whispers of Ancient Echoes

Today, I embarked on a journey through Kyoto's serene landscapes, seeking the quiet corners where history and spirituality intertwine. As an archivist, I'm naturally drawn to places that hold layers of stories, and Kyoto certainly didn't disappoint. The day was filled with gentle discoveries, each temple and path revealing a new facet of this ancient city. It was a day for reflection, a day to let the whispers of the past guide my thoughts.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hanasaki. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast, savoring the delicate flavors and textures. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of walking and exploration. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and I felt immediately at ease. I found myself reflecting on how much I enjoy these solo travels, the freedom to set my own pace and linger where my curiosity leads me. Hans-Peter, while a wonderful companion, sometimes prefers a faster pace, eager to see as much as possible. I, on the other hand, like to truly absorb the atmosphere of a place. Perhaps on our next trip, we can find a way to balance our different styles.

The first stop on my itinerary was the famed Philosopher's Path. I started my walk near the Nanzen-ji Temple, and as I strolled along the canal, the crisp morning air filled my lungs. The path, though not yet adorned with the cherry blossoms it's known for in spring, possessed a quiet charm. The bare branches of the trees reached towards the sky, their silhouettes reflected in the still water. I imagined the countless philosophers who had walked this same path, pondering life's great questions. I found myself doing the same, my thoughts drifting to my work at the Deutsches Historisches Museum and the importance of preserving the past for future generations.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its grand temples, but in the quiet corners where one can find solace and connect with the past.

As I continued my walk, I reached the Eikandō Temple, also known as Zenrin-ji. The temple is renowned for its autumn colors, and while the maples were still bare in February, the temple exuded a sense of tranquility. I climbed the Tahoto Pagoda, a two-story structure that offered a panoramic view of the city. From above, Kyoto stretched out before me, a tapestry of rooftops and temples nestled amidst the rolling hills. I thought of Hans-Peter, and how much he would have enjoyed this view. I made a mental note to bring him here on our next visit.

The Mikaeri Amida statue at Eikandō was particularly striking. Unlike most statues of the Buddha, this one depicts him looking over his shoulder. Legend has it that the statue turned its head to encourage a lagging disciple, a reminder to always look back and help those in need. It was a poignant message, one that resonated deeply with me. As an archivist, I often feel a responsibility to guide others through the labyrinth of history, to help them understand the stories that have shaped our world.

For lunch, I ventured to Nishikawa, a restaurant known for its refined Japanese cuisine. I opted for a traditional Kaiseki meal, a multi-course feast that showcased the season's freshest ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were subtle and delicate, a testament to the chef's skill and artistry. It was a truly memorable culinary experience. I thought back to my childhood in Cēsis, Latvia, and the simple, hearty meals my grandmother used to prepare. While the Kaiseki meal was certainly more refined, both shared a common thread: a deep respect for the ingredients and a desire to nourish the body and soul.

In the afternoon, I visited Shōrenin Temple, another of Kyoto's hidden gems. This temple, once a residence for members of the imperial family, exuded an air of elegance and grace. I wandered through the temple's various buildings and gardens, admiring the intricate details and the serene atmosphere. The gardens were particularly enchanting, with their meticulously raked gravel, ancient trees, and tranquil ponds.

One of the highlights of Shōrenin was the blue light illumination in the bamboo grove. It was a truly magical experience, the ethereal glow transforming the grove into a scene from a dream. I felt a sense of peace and wonder, as if I had stepped into another world. I recalled a similar experience I had in the forests of Latvia as a child, where the sunlight filtering through the trees created a dappled, otherworldly effect. Nature, in its many forms, has always held a special power to transport me to a place of tranquility and contemplation.

As evening approached, I made my way to Oryori Menami for dinner. This restaurant, founded in 1939, is known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine, with a focus on obanzai, small, home-style dishes made with seasonal ingredients. I sampled a variety of obanzai, each one bursting with flavor and texture. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Before heading back to the Ryokan, I decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife with a visit to the Kyoto Star Bar. I'm not usually one for bars, but I was intrigued by the reviews I had read about this place. It turned out to be a sophisticated and stylish establishment, with a wide selection of cocktails and a knowledgeable staff. I ordered a classic gin and tonic and savored the moment, reflecting on the day's adventures. The bartender, dressed in a traditional kimono, was a fascinating sight. It was a reminder of how Kyoto effortlessly blends the old and the new, tradition and modernity.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Tofuku-ji Temple, Yasaka Kōshin-dō Temple, and Maruyama Park, further immersing myself in Kyoto's rich cultural tapestry. I might even do a little shopping at the Daimaru Kyoto Store. I'm particularly interested in seeing the Tofuku-ji Temple's Zen garden and the colorful charms at Yasaka Kōshin-dō Temple. I am excited to see what new stories and experiences await me.

Back at the Kyoto Watazen Ryokan, I took a moment to jot down my thoughts and impressions of the day. It's a practice I've come to cherish during my travels, a way to capture the fleeting moments and preserve them for posterity. As I sit here, surrounded by the comforts of my traditional Japanese room, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for this opportunity to explore Kyoto, to connect with its history and culture, and to discover new aspects of myself. It's a journey that I know will stay with me long after I've returned to Berlin. As Nishida Kitaro, the philosopher of the path I walked today, once said, Waves are the movements of infinity itself… There is nothing more pleasant than to be embraced in the bosom of great nature.
