Solo Exploration of Chefchaouen's Blue Streets
Day 4: Chasing Waterfalls and Moroccan Art in Chefchaouen
Embark on a day of natural beauty and local artistry, exploring the stunning Akchour Waterfalls and vibrant art scene in Chefchaouen.
Akchour's Embrace & Artistic Treasures
Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of nature's raw power and the delicate touch of human artistry. Leaving the blue-washed streets of Chefchaouen behind, I ventured into the Rif Mountains, seeking the famed Akchour Waterfalls. Later, I returned to town, eager to explore the local art scene. It was a day that filled my senses and reminded me why I love to travel solo – the freedom to follow every whim and curiosity.
The day began with an early breakfast at Restaurant Bab Kasaba. I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan breakfast, fueling up with some mint tea and pastries before my journey to Akchour. The restaurant was already buzzing with activity, locals and tourists alike starting their day in the heart of Chefchaouen.
The journey to Akchour was an experience in itself. I opted for a shared taxi, a common and affordable way to travel in Morocco. Crammed into the back with several other passengers, I watched as the landscape transformed from the blue hues of Chefchaouen to the earthy tones of the Rif Mountains. The drive took about 45 minutes, and the winding roads offered glimpses of the rugged terrain ahead.
Arriving at Akchour, I was immediately struck by the natural beauty surrounding me. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the bustling town. The trail to the Waterfalls Akchour began near Talassemtane National Park, and I could already hear the sound of rushing water. The area is known for its pleasant temperatures during this time of year, making it ideal for hiking.

The hike itself was a moderate challenge, perfect for a Saturday adventure. The path wound along the river, crossing it several times with the help of large cement blocks and makeshift bridges. The scenery was breathtaking – lush greenery, moss-covered rocks, and small cascades at every turn. I made sure to wear my comfortable walking shoes, a travel essential I always prioritize. I also remembered to pack my reusable water bottle, determined to stay hydrated throughout the trek.
Along the way, I passed several small stands selling refreshments and tagines. The aroma of Moroccan spices filled the air, tempting me to stop for a bite. However, I decided to press on, eager to reach the main waterfall.
As I hiked deeper into the mountains, I noticed the amount of rubbish along the trail, a stark reminder of the impact of tourism. It was disheartening to see plastic bottles and wrappers carelessly discarded in such a beautiful natural setting. I made a mental note to be extra mindful of my own waste and to encourage others to do the same. Sustainability is not just a buzzword for me; it's a responsibility I carry with me wherever I go.
Finally, after about an hour and a half, I reached the Akchour Waterfalls. The sight was truly magnificent – a powerful cascade of water plunging into a crystal-clear pool below. I took some time to simply sit and soak in the beauty, feeling the cool mist on my face. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to reconnect with nature and escape the stresses of everyday life.
The beauty of Akchour is not just in the destination, but in the journey itself – the winding paths, the sound of rushing water, and the feeling of being immersed in nature's embrace.
I explored the area around the waterfall, taking photos and admiring the natural swimming areas. Although it was tempting to take a dip, the water was a bit too cold for a swim. Instead, I simply enjoyed the view, marveling at the emerald water and dramatic rock formations.
After spending a few hours at the waterfalls, I began the trek back to Akchour. The return journey was just as enjoyable, offering a different perspective on the stunning scenery. I passed by other hikers, exchanging smiles and nods of appreciation for the shared experience.
Back in Chefchaouen, I decided to have lunch at Restaurant Ali Baba. I opted for a vegetarian tagine, eager to sample more of the local cuisine. The tagine was delicious, packed with fresh vegetables and aromatic spices. The service was friendly and attentive, making for a pleasant dining experience.
With my belly full and my spirits high, I set out to explore the local art scene. I stumbled upon B & H Art Shop, a charming clothing store showcasing handmade garments crafted with love and attention to detail. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colors and intricate designs of the clothing.

I chatted with the friendly staff, learning about the techniques and traditions behind the creations. The shop itself was a visual treat, adorned with beautiful decorations that reflected the rich heritage of Chefchaouen.
I ended up purchasing a beautiful, handwoven scarf, a perfect memento of my time in Chefchaouen. As I made my purchase, I felt a sense of connection to the local community, knowing that I was supporting their craft and preserving their traditions. It's these kinds of experiences that make travel so meaningful for me – the chance to connect with people and cultures on a deeper level.
For dinner, I chose Restaurant Terrasse Djebli, drawn in by the promise of a beautiful view. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, offering a breathtaking panorama of the Rif Mountains. As the sun began to set, the sky was painted with vibrant colors, creating a magical ambiance.
