A Friday in the Blue Pearl

Today was all about embracing the heart of Chefchaouen, letting myself get wonderfully lost in its labyrinthine alleys and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of this blue-washed city. It’s amazing how a single color can transform an entire town into something so magical and serene.

My day began, as most do here, with a leisurely breakfast at Restaurant Lalla Messaouda. I settled in for a Moroccan-style breakfast, complete with fried eggs, cheese, olives, Moroccan mortadella, bread, and coffee. The restaurant had a lovely view, which made the experience even better.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I set out to explore Bab El Ain. As I approached, the architecture was stunning, showcasing the traditional craftsmanship of the region. The archway was beautifully adorned, inviting me to step through and immerse myself in the vibrant atmosphere of the medina. I took my time wandering through the narrow, winding streets filled with shops selling handmade crafts, spices, and local delicacies. The blue-washed walls created a serene backdrop, and I couldn't resist snapping photos at every turn. The locals were incredibly friendly, always ready with a smile and a story.
Sometimes, the best way to discover a place is to simply wander without a plan, letting the city guide your steps and surprise you with its hidden corners.

Next on my list was Plaza Uta el Hamman, the heart of Chefchaouen. The square was bustling with activity, lined with cafes and restaurants. I found a spot at Cafe Clock for lunch. I opted for a vegan pastille, which was delicious. The cafe had a great vibe, with music and a rooftop seating area offering a nice view.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in some souvenir shopping at Hibart Souvenirs Shop. The shop was filled with authentic Moroccan crafts, from intricately designed ceramics to colorful textiles. I spent hours exploring the unique offerings, each piece telling its own story. The owners were incredibly welcoming, sharing their passion for Moroccan craftsmanship. I picked up a few small items, including a hand-painted tagine and some traditional textiles, to remind me of my time in this beautiful city.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Chez Hicham for dinner. The restaurant offered a Moroccan chicken salad that was cooked to perfection, and I also ordered a yogurt. The restaurant had a great view of the square, which added to the dining experience.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had come to appreciate the simple act of wandering. Without a strict itinerary, I allowed myself to be led by the city's charm, discovering hidden gems and connecting with the local culture in a way that wouldn't have been possible otherwise. I found myself drawn to the vibrant colors of the textiles, the intricate designs of the ceramics, and the warm smiles of the people I met along the way. Each interaction, each new discovery, added a layer of depth to my understanding of Chefchaouen, transforming it from a picturesque destination into a living, breathing experience.

I am also glad that I didn't forget the essentials for this trip, like my camera and travel journal. However, I do wish I had remembered to bring my adapter for Moroccan outlets and my sunglasses. Note to self: always double-check the packing list!

Tomorrow, I’m planning a trip to Akchour and its waterfalls. I’ve heard it’s a beautiful natural escape from the blue city, and I’m looking forward to a day of hiking and exploring the Rif Mountains. I'll make sure to have breakfast at Restaurant Bab Kasaba before heading out.

Chefchaouen has a rhythm of its own, a gentle hum that resonates through the blue-washed walls and echoes in the laughter of its people. It's a place where time seems to slow down, inviting you to savor each moment and appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. As I walked back to Hotel Dar Mounir, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this solo adventure, for the opportunity to immerse myself in a culture so different from my own, and for the chance to discover the magic that lies hidden within the blue alleys of Chefchaouen.

Back at the hotel, I spent some time knitting, a habit I picked up from my homeland, Iceland, while enjoying some mint tea. I also spoke to Maximilian and Clara. They both seem to be having fun, but I miss them dearly. I can't wait to tell them all about Chefchaouen.
