Chasing Waterfalls and City Views

Today was all about embracing the natural beauty and cultural richness of Chefchaouen. Daniel and I set out early, eager to explore beyond the enchanting blue alleyways and delve deeper into what this Moroccan gem has to offer. From the refreshing cascades of Ras El Ma to the stunning panoramic vistas, it was a day filled with unforgettable sights and experiences.

The morning began with a delightful breakfast at Chez Aziz. We enjoyed traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee, fueling up for our day of exploration. The hotel was just next door to Chez Aziz which made it very convenient. As a marketing consultant, I always appreciate a business that understands the importance of location and convenience. Daniel, ever the pragmatist, was simply happy for the caffeine fix. I managed to remember my camera today, so I was happy about that. It's easy to forget things when you're excited to explore a new place.
With our appetites satisfied, we ventured towards Ras El Ma, a local spring and waterfall located just outside the northeastern gate of the medina. The walk itself was an experience, as we navigated through the bustling streets, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Chefchaouen. The air was filled with the sounds of locals going about their daily lives, the aroma of spices, and the visual feast of blue hues at every turn. As we approached Ras El Ma, the sound of rushing water grew louder, creating a sense of anticipation.
Ras El Ma turned out to be a refreshing oasis. The water cascaded down the rocks, creating a cool and inviting atmosphere. Locals were collecting water, washing clothes, and simply enjoying the natural beauty of the place. It was a lively scene, a perfect blend of nature and daily life. Daniel, with his software engineer's mind, was fascinated by the simple yet effective way the locals utilized the spring water. I, on the other hand, was captivated by the picturesque setting, snapping photos of the water, the people, and the surrounding greenery. The juxtaposition of the natural spring against the backdrop of the blue city was simply stunning.
The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not only in its blue walls but also in its vibrant culture and the warmth of its people.

After spending some time at Ras El Ma, we decided to seek out a panoramic viewpoint of the city. We followed a winding path that led us uphill, passing by local homes and gardens. The higher we climbed, the more breathtaking the views became. From our vantage point, we could see the entire blue city sprawled out before us, a sea of azure rooftops and winding alleyways. The surrounding Rif Mountains added to the dramatic scenery, creating a truly unforgettable vista. I took a moment to sketch the scene in my journal, trying to capture the essence of this magical place. Daniel, ever the romantic, simply held my hand and took in the view with me.

For lunch, we stopped at Assaada, a restaurant recommended by several locals. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet corner of the medina, offering a respite from the bustling streets. We savored traditional Moroccan dishes, including tagine and couscous, bursting with flavor and spices. The mint tea, a staple of Moroccan hospitality, was the perfect accompaniment to our meal. As we ate, we watched the locals and tourists pass by, each with their own story to tell. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect blend of culinary delights and cultural immersion. I was able to get some great photos of the food, too. I love capturing the essence of a meal with my camera. Daniel was happy to dig in!
In the afternoon, we visited the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen, a historic landmark located in the heart of the medina. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter, we admired its architecture from the outside, marveling at its intricate details and imposing presence. The mosque's octagonal minaret stood tall against the blue sky, a symbol of the city's rich cultural heritage. The square surrounding the mosque was filled with locals and tourists, creating a vibrant and lively atmosphere. As we strolled around the square, we listened to the call to prayer, a melodic sound that echoed through the city, adding to its spiritual ambiance.

Before dinner, we decided to unwind at Bar Oum Rabie, known for being one of the few places in Chefchaouen that serves alcohol. We enjoyed a glass of Moroccan wine, savoring the moment and reflecting on our day's adventures. The bar had a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, a perfect spot to people-watch and soak in the local vibe. Daniel and I chatted with fellow travelers, sharing stories and tips, forging connections that transcended borders and cultures. I even managed to brush up on my French with a couple from Quebec.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Lalla Messaouda, drawn in by its authentic Moroccan cuisine and cozy ambiance. We dined on traditional dishes, including tagine and grilled meats, each bite a burst of flavor and spices. The restaurant's warm and inviting atmosphere made us feel right at home, as if we were dining with family. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, adding to the overall experience. As we finished our meal, we felt a sense of contentment and gratitude for the day's adventures.

We sat on the rooftop terrace, gazing at the starlit sky and listening to the sounds of the city below. Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the natural beauty outside the city with a trip to Parc National de Talassemtane and Akchour. I'm especially excited to see the waterfalls and lush landscapes. I've packed my hiking boots this time, determined to be prepared for any adventure that comes our way. I'm also hoping to pick up some local crafts in Chefchaouen. I've heard the artisans here are incredibly talented. Daniel is looking forward to trying the food at Café Clock, a place we've heard rave reviews about. It promises to be another day of exploration, adventure, and cultural immersion, and I can't wait to share it with you all. I am also trying to convince Daniel to take a cooking class, but I am not sure if that will happen.
