Today marked another unforgettable chapter in our Moroccan adventure. Leaving behind the familiar blue hues of Chefchaouen, Daniel and I ventured into the rugged terrain of the Rif Mountains, eager to discover the natural wonders hidden within Talassemtane National Park. Little did we know, a day of breathtaking landscapes and invigorating hikes awaited us.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Clock. I opted for their traditional Moroccan pancakes, while Daniel chose a classic omelet. Energized and ready for the day, we set off towards Parc National de Talassemtane.

The drive itself was an experience. The winding roads offered panoramic views of the valleys below, dotted with small villages and terraced fields. As we ascended into the mountains, the landscape transformed, with lush forests of pine and cedar replacing the arid plains. The air grew crisper and cooler, a welcome change from the warmth of Chefchaouen. It was a stark reminder of the diverse landscapes Morocco has to offer.

Reaching the park entrance, we were immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. Talassemtane National Park spans over 580 square kilometers, a vast wilderness of mountains, gorges, and forests. The trail to the Akchour Waterfalls was well-maintained but challenging, with steep inclines and rocky paths. Fortunately, I had packed my trusty hiking boots, a decision I was immensely grateful for. Daniel, ever the gentleman, offered a steadying hand whenever the terrain became particularly tricky. Along the way, we passed small Berber communities, their vibrant clothing adding splashes of color to the green landscape.

We continued our trek towards the Grand Cascade, the larger of the two waterfalls. The path became steeper and more rugged, but the anticipation of what awaited us spurred us on. And then, there it was – a magnificent waterfall plunging down a sheer rock face into a turquoise pool below. The water was icy cold, but after the strenuous hike, it was incredibly refreshing. After our refreshing dip, we made our way back to Chefchaouen, our bodies tired but our spirits soaring. The tagine was perfectly spiced, and the mint tea was the ideal way to end the meal.

In the late afternoon, we strolled through the local markets, eager to find some unique souvenirs. Chefchaouen crafts is known for its crafts, and we found ourselves drawn to the colorful woven goods, leather products, and blue pottery. I picked up a beautiful handwoven scarf, while Daniel chose a leather wallet. We also admired the intricate metalwork and the vibrant ceramics. It was tempting to buy everything, but we reminded ourselves of the limited space in our luggage.
