Triumph at Cacanapunta Pass
Today was a day of incredible highs, both literally and figuratively, as we tackled Cacanapunta Pass on our Vilcabamba Trek. The views were simply breathtaking, and the sense of accomplishment was immense. But the day wasn't just about the trek; it was also about immersing ourselves in the charm of Vilcabamba, a town that seems to hold a secret to longevity and happiness.

The morning started early, as most trekking days do. We fueled up with a hearty breakfast at Kishor's Herbals and Bistro. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, which included eggs, fresh bread, and a coca tea to help with the altitude. The coca tea was especially welcome, as I could feel the altitude starting to affect me slightly. It reminded me of our trips to the Alps from Lyon, where even short hikes required some acclimatization.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off towards Cacanapunta Pass. The trail wound its way through stunning Andean landscapes, with views of snow-capped mountains in the distance. The air was crisp and clean, and the only sounds were the crunch of our boots on the trail and the occasional call of a bird. I was so glad I remembered to pack my camera; every turn seemed to reveal a new postcard-worthy scene. I even managed to capture a photo of a bright-red bird, a tiny flash of color against the vast green landscape.
The ascent to Cacanapunta Pass was challenging, but the views from the top were more than worth the effort. From the pass, we could see for miles in every direction, with a panoramic vista of the surrounding mountains and valleys. It felt like we were on top of the world. We took some time to soak in the view and snap photos before starting our descent.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are not about reaching a destination, but about the journey itself and the people we share it with. For lunch, we stopped at El Huerto Restaurant. I was eager to try some local cuisine, and I wasn't disappointed. The restaurant uses locally produced organic ingredients, and you can taste the difference. I opted for the traditional Lomo Saltado, a stir-fry of beef, onions, tomatoes, and peppers, served with rice and potatoes. It was absolutely delicious and the perfect reward after a morning of trekking. I even learned that 'El Huerto' means 'The Orchard' in Spanish, which made me think of the beautiful orchards we sometimes visit in the Rhône Valley.

After lunch, we explored the town of Vilcabamba itself. Vilcabamba is known for the longevity of its inhabitants, and it's easy to see why. The town has a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere, and the people are friendly and welcoming. We wandered through the town square, visited the local market, and chatted with some of the locals. I even picked up a few souvenirs to bring back home to Jean-Pierre and Sophie.
In the evening, we had dinner at Restaurant Vilcabamba. The food was simple but delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. We shared stories from our day of trekking and laughed about some of the mishaps along the way.

After dinner, some of us decided to check out El Muki, a local bar. It was a fun, lively spot with a mix of locals and tourists. The music was a mix of classic and modern Latin music, and we even tried our hand at some salsa dancing. While I'm no expert, it was a great way to experience the local culture and have some fun with my friends.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I've had today. Conquering Cacanapunta Pass was a physical challenge, but it was also a mental and emotional one. The views were incredible, the food was delicious, and the company was even better. Vilcabamba is a special place, and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to experience it.
Tomorrow, we continue our trek towards Paso Trapecio -- Huayhuash. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us, and I'm also looking forward to experiencing more of the local culture. We'll be having breakfast at Green House, lunch at Restaurant Katherine, and dinner at Sol del Venado. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Eco-Resort Izhcayluma.
This trip has been an amazing experience so far, and I'm excited to see what the rest of the trek has in store for us. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel and explore new places. Sharing these experiences with my friends makes it even more special. I know Jean-Pierre and Sophie would love it here, and I can't wait to tell them all about it when I get back to Lyon. Maybe we can even plan a family trip to Peru someday!
I'm also mindful of the fact that it's almost Christmas. I'm starting to think about the gifts I'll be buying and the traditional French Christmas meals we'll be having. But for now, I'm going to enjoy the present moment and soak in all the beauty that Peru has to offer.
The trek to Vilcabamba has been nothing short of magical, filled with history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes. The Inca trails we've traversed whisper tales of a glorious past, and every stone seems to hold a secret. The vibrant colors of the local textiles, the tantalizing aromas of Peruvian cuisine, and the warm smiles of the people have all woven together to create an unforgettable tapestry of experiences.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this journey has been the opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature. Away from the constant notifications and demands of modern life, I've found a sense of peace and clarity that I didn't even realize I was missing. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best things in life are the simplest ones: a stunning view, a hearty meal, and good company.
As we move forward on our trek, I'm filled with a sense of anticipation for what lies ahead. Each day brings new challenges and new rewards, and I'm eager to embrace them all. I know that this journey will stay with me long after I return to Lyon, and I'm grateful for every moment of it.
I'm also starting to think about how I can incorporate some of the lessons I've learned on this trip into my daily life back home. Perhaps I can be more mindful of the present moment, or make a greater effort to connect with nature. Maybe I can even try to learn a few salsa steps to surprise Jean-Pierre!
The Vilcabamba Trek is more than just a physical adventure; it's a journey of self-discovery. It's a chance to challenge yourself, to push your limits, and to see the world from a new perspective. And it's an opportunity to create memories that will last a lifetime.
So, if you're looking for an adventure that will challenge you, inspire you, and leave you with a renewed appreciation for the beauty of the world, I highly recommend the Vilcabamba Trek. Just be sure to pack your hiking boots, your camera, and your sense of adventure!
And don't forget to try the Lomo Saltado. You won't regret it.
