Day 6: Coastal Views and Culinary Delights: A Day Exploring Arrábida
Discover Arrábida's stunning viewpoints, savor Italian flavors, relax on Sesimbra's beach, and enjoy local seafood on a perfect day.
A Day of Breathtaking Vistas and Delicious Discoveries
Today was a day of embracing the stunning natural beauty of Arrábida and indulging in some of the local flavors. David and I set out with a sense of adventure, ready to soak in the panoramic views and savor the culinary delights this region has to offer. As an environmental consultant, I always appreciate experiencing nature's wonders firsthand, and Arrábida Natural Park certainly didn't disappoint.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Due Fratelli Ristorante - Culinária Italiana Artesanal in Sesimbra. This Italian restaurant, run by the Simonassi brothers, was a delightful surprise. It felt like a little piece of Italy nestled in Portugal. I opted for a classic cappuccino and a pastry, while David went for a more substantial breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore the viewpoints that Arrábida is famous for.
Our first stop was the Santo Domingo viewpoint. The drive up was an experience in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the breathtaking coastline. When we arrived, the view was simply stunning. The turquoise waters of the Atlantic stretched out before us, meeting the rugged cliffs of the Arrábida mountains. The panoramic vista was incredible, and we spent a good while taking photos and simply soaking it all in. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel – the feeling of being completely immersed in natural beauty. I could have stayed there for hours, just watching the waves crash against the shore. The viewpoint offered a sweeping vista of the coastline, and the fresh sea air was invigorating. David, ever the photographer, snapped away, trying to capture the essence of the landscape.

Sometimes, the most beautiful places are those that take your breath away without even trying.
Next on our list was Miradouro da Penha de França. This viewpoint offered a different perspective, with views stretching out over Lisbon and the surrounding areas. Although it's not directly in Arrábida Natural Park, the views were still impressive. It was interesting to see the urban landscape in the distance, contrasting with the natural beauty we had just experienced. The viewpoint is near the church of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, which, despite being destroyed in the 1755 earthquake, has a legend that the image of Our Lady survived untouched.

After all that sightseeing, we were ready for some lunch. We headed to Aukanaii Beach Bar in Sesimbra. Located right on the beach, this restaurant offered a relaxed atmosphere and stunning views of the sea. It was the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy some fresh seafood. I decided on the grilled sardines, a local specialty, while David opted for the seafood pasta. The food was delicious, and the sound of the waves crashing nearby added to the ambiance. The beach bar had a lively atmosphere, with people enjoying the sun and the sea. It was a great spot to relax and soak up the local vibe. We spent a leisurely hour enjoying our lunch and watching the world go by. It was a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the afternoon sun.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we spent the afternoon relaxing on the beach. Sesimbra's beach is known for its calm waters and golden sand, making it an ideal spot for swimming and sunbathing. I took a dip in the sea, while David preferred to lounge on the sand with a book. It was the perfect way to unwind after a busy day of sightseeing. The sun was warm, the water was refreshing, and the atmosphere was incredibly relaxing. It was a welcome change of pace from our busy lives in Berlin. I even managed to catch a few pages of my book on sustainable living, always trying to learn more about my passion. The beach was bustling with activity, families building sandcastles, couples strolling along the shore, and children splashing in the waves.
As evening approached, we made our way to Taberna Típica O Pescador II for dinner. This traditional Portuguese restaurant is known for its fresh seafood and authentic atmosphere. We started with some local cheeses and olives, followed by a hearty seafood stew. The food was delicious, and the service was friendly and welcoming. The restaurant had a rustic charm, with wooden tables and chairs and walls adorned with nautical memorabilia. It felt like stepping back in time, experiencing the true essence of Portuguese culture. We savored every bite, enjoying the rich flavors and the warm ambiance. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we decided to check out Marginal Bar Sesimbra. This bar is known for its cocktails and sea views. We enjoyed a couple of drinks while watching the sunset over the ocean. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with music and laughter filling the air. It was a great spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. Sipping on a refreshing cocktail, we watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with vibrant colors. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to a wonderful day. The bar offered a wide selection of drinks, and the bartenders were friendly and skilled.

Tomorrow, we're planning a boat ride on the Sado River and a visit to the Monumento Natural da Pedra da Mua. I'm particularly excited about the boat ride, as I've heard it's a great opportunity to spot dolphins. David is looking forward to exploring the natural monument, eager to capture its unique geological formations. We'll also be having breakfast at Casa Mateus, lunch at O Farol, and dinner at Forte de Santiago de Sesimbra. Before we head back to Berlin, we will be visiting Ceramica Vicente & Filhos, Lda to get some souvenirs. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to share it all with you. It's hard to believe our trip is coming to an end, but I'm determined to make the most of every moment.
Today was a reminder of the simple joys of life – good food, stunning scenery, and the company of loved ones. As we drove back to our accommodation, I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty of Arrábida Natural Park. It's a place that I know I'll never forget, a place that has touched my heart and soul.
