Spiritual Spaces and Artistic Depths

Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Naoshima's art scene, exploring spaces that blurred the lines between the physical and the spiritual. It's funny, I packed my sketchbook and pencils, ready to capture the essence of the island, but quickly realized that some experiences transcend simple representation. It was a day for feeling, for experiencing, and for letting the art speak for itself.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Ippo. Tucked away near Minamidera, this charming spot felt like stepping into someone's home [it reminded me a bit of my grandma's kitchen back in Muncie!]. I opted for their vegan breakfast set, eager to fuel up for a day of exploration. The coffee was strong, the food was comforting, and the atmosphere was incredibly welcoming. It was the perfect start to a day dedicated to art and introspection.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I made my way to the Art House Project: Minamidera. This was an experience I had been particularly excited about. Designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, Minamidera is more than just a building; it's an integral part of the artwork it houses. I had read about James Turrell's Backside of the Moon, the art piece within, but nothing could have prepared me for the reality. The interplay of light and perception was unlike anything I've ever encountered. It challenged my senses and left me pondering the nature of reality itself.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After the deeply moving experience at Minamidera, I journeyed to the Lee Ufan Museum. The walk itself was a treat, with the crisp February air and the serene beauty of the island surrounding me. The museum, another masterpiece by Tadao Ando, is dedicated to the works of Korean contemporary artist Lee Ufan. The minimalist design of the museum perfectly complements Ufan's art, which often explores the relationship between nature and humanity. I was particularly struck by the large installations made of stone, concrete, and iron. They were powerful in their simplicity, inviting contemplation and reflection.

For lunch, I decided to try Perma_Naoshima, a restaurant known for its authentic ramen. After spending the morning immersed in art, a comforting bowl of ramen sounded like the perfect way to recharge. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the ramen was absolutely delicious. It was clear that the chefs took pride in using fresh, local ingredients to create a truly memorable culinary experience.

As evening approached, I found myself drawn to New Olympia for dinner. This sushi restaurant had been recommended to me by several locals, and I was eager to try it out. The restaurant had a cozy and intimate ambiance, perfect for a solo traveler like myself. I opted for the chef's selection of sushi, and each piece was a work of art in itself. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were perfectly balanced. It was without a doubt one of the best sushi meals I've ever had. Apparently children under the age of 10 are not allowed to enter which ensures a quiet atmosphere [something I appreciated as a solo traveller].

To cap off the day, I decided to check out Bar SARU. I was in the mood for a nightcap, and this bar seemed like the perfect spot. It was small and cozy, with a laid-back atmosphere. I ordered a local beer and chatted with the bartender, who was incredibly friendly and welcoming. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's experiences.
