Day 13: Osaka's Hidden Gems: Serenity and Culinary Delights on the Kumano Kodo Trail
Discover Osaka's best-kept secrets: tranquil shrines, interactive art, and delectable cuisine along the enchanting Kumano Kodo trail.
A Day of Tranquility and Tastes in Osaka
Today was a delightful blend of serene reflection and culinary exploration in and around Osaka. Leaving the peaceful ambiance of Kumano Kodo for a day, I ventured into the city to experience its unique offerings. It was a day filled with unexpected discoveries, reminding me why I love solo travel – the freedom to wander and immerse myself in the local culture.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Kumano Winery Guest House /Dal Chef’s Table. Giovanni, the owner, always makes the most amazing meals with ingredients grown right there. I enjoyed some fresh baked bread with his homemade balsamic vinegar and a cheese omelet. It’s always a treat to start the day with such care and attention to detail.

Shinsekaiinari Shrine: A Peaceful Start
My first stop was the Shinsekaiinari Shrine. Nestled in the bustling Shinsekai district, this charming Shinto shrine offered a tranquil escape. Unlike the crowded tourist spots, it was a serene oasis with vibrant vermillion torii gates and lush greenery. Dedicated to Inari, the deity of rice and agriculture, the shrine exuded an atmosphere of peace, perfect for contemplation.

I took part in a local custom, spinning the stone roulette wheel to receive my fortune. Though the fortune was written in Kanji, the experience was delightful, connecting me with Japan’s rich cultural heritage. I spent some time admiring the intricate details of the shrine's architecture and soaking in the calming atmosphere.

teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka: An Evening of Enchantment
As evening approached, I headed to the teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka. This outdoor experience transforms the Nagai Botanical Garden into a mesmerizing open-air museum at night. The garden features interactive artworks that blend art with nature, creating a unique and enchanting display.

The installations use the plants, lake, and ecosystems of the garden, creating a seamless continuity between the environment and the art. The artworks transform interactively, influenced by wind, rain, and the behavior of people, making everyone a part of the experience. I wandered through the garden, captivated by the floating lamps on Oike Lake and the resonating crape myrtles.
It was magical, and reminded me a bit of some of the light festivals Jean-Pierre and I have enjoyed back in Lyon. The way the lights reflected on the water created a dreamy atmosphere. I think Sophie would have been amazed by it all.
A Culinary Journey: Lunch and Dinner in Osaka
For lunch, I ventured to Tororoya, a restaurant known for its healthy and delicious dishes made with Yamato potato. I tried the tororo meshi, a flavorful dish with grated yam and barley rice. The option to choose between wild yam or Japanese yam was a treat, and the free refills of barley rice were much appreciated after a morning of exploring.

In the evening, I dined at Yorozuya Eatery, a hidden gem offering an authentic Japanese dining experience. The restaurant had a welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly kind. I indulged in their star dishes, including teppanyaki and okonomiyaki, cooked right at my table. The personalized service and delicious food made it a memorable experience.

Daimonzaka Chaya: A Glimpse into History
Before dinner, I made a stop at Daimonzaka Chaya, a shop located at the entrance of the Daimonzaka path. This charming teahouse offers visitors the unique opportunity to rent traditional Heian period costumes. Though I didn't have time to rent a costume today, I admired the wide range of vibrant and refined Heian costumes on display.

The idea of traveling back in time and exploring Nachi Taisha as an aristocrat intrigued me. I made a mental note to return another day to fully experience this cultural gem. As I head back to Jokiin in Koya, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures.

It's moments like these that make me feel so grateful for the opportunity to travel and explore the world. Until tomorrow, sayonara!
