A Fond Farewell

As our 11-day Moroccan adventure in Moulay Idriss comes to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. This journey has been a tapestry of vibrant experiences, from exploring ancient ruins to savoring the warmth of Moroccan hospitality. Today, we take a final stroll through this sacred town, etching every moment into our memories.

The morning began with a delightful breakfast at SCORPION HOUSE. The fresh mint tea and warm bread, a staple of Moroccan breakfasts, were the perfect start to our last day. Jan and I sat on the terrace, watching the town slowly awaken. The call to prayer echoed through the hills, a familiar and comforting sound that has been the soundtrack to our stay.

Our first stop was Dar Moulay Idriss, the mausoleum of the town's founder. Although non-Muslims are not allowed inside, the exterior is a sight to behold. The intricate tile work and the grandeur of the architecture speak volumes about the town's rich history and spiritual significance. I stood there, absorbing the serene atmosphere, feeling a deep connection to this place.

Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.

Next, we wandered through the narrow, winding streets of the medina, a maze of shops and houses clinging to the hillside. The vibrant colors of the textiles, the scent of spices, and the sounds of daily life created a sensory feast. We stopped at Al Andaloussiya Diyafa, a traditional guesthouse, to admire its stunning courtyard and intricate mosaics. The owner, a gracious woman named Fatima, shared stories about the history of the house and the town, adding another layer of depth to our experience.

For lunch, we ventured to Grillade Albanna, a local eatery known for its delicious grilled meats. The aroma of grilling meat filled the air as we approached. We ordered a mixed grill, a platter of lamb, chicken, and beef, served with fresh salad and bread. The flavors were incredible, a testament to the simple yet skillful preparation. As we ate, we watched the locals go about their day, a reminder of the vibrant community that calls Moulay Idriss home.

In the afternoon, we simply wandered, allowing ourselves to get lost in the beauty of the town. We stumbled upon hidden courtyards, quiet gardens, and panoramic viewpoints. Each corner turned revealed a new perspective, a new detail to admire. I took countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this magical place, knowing that no image could truly do it justice.

As the sun began to set, we found ourselves at a viewpoint overlooking the town. The golden light bathed the white-washed houses, creating a scene of breathtaking beauty. Jan and I sat in silence, holding hands, savoring the moment. It was a perfect ending to our time in Moulay Idriss.

For our final dinner, we chose La Baraka, a restaurant recommended by our host family. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, with traditional Moroccan decor and soft lighting. We ordered tagine, a slow-cooked stew, a Moroccan classic. The flavors were rich and complex, a delightful culmination of our culinary journey.

During dinner, Jan and I reflected on our time in Moulay Idriss. We spoke of the kindness of the people, the beauty of the landscape, and the richness of the culture. We agreed that this trip had been a truly transformative experience, one that would stay with us long after we returned home.

Staying with a local family has been the highlight of our trip. Their warmth and hospitality made us feel like part of their family. We shared meals, stories, and laughter, creating bonds that transcended cultural differences. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to practice my Arabic, a skill that has allowed me to connect with the local community on a deeper level. It reminded me of my upbringing in Ha'il, where hospitality is a way of life.

As a cultural liaison, I am always seeking ways to bridge the gap between different communities. This trip has reinforced my belief in the power of travel to promote understanding and empathy. By immersing ourselves in different cultures, we can break down stereotypes and build meaningful connections.

I must admit, I wish I had remembered my portable phone charger. Keeping my phone charged has been a bit of a challenge, but it has also forced me to disconnect and be more present in the moment. And while I missed having sunglasses, I found that a simple headscarf provided ample protection from the sun. Next time, I will be sure to double-check my packing list!

Tomorrow, we will be heading back to Casablanca to catch our flight to Amsterdam. While I am looking forward to returning home, I will miss the charm and tranquility of Moulay Idriss. This town has captured my heart, and I know that I will carry its spirit with me wherever I go.

This trip to Morocco, especially our time in Moulay Idriss, has been a reminder of the beauty and diversity of our world. It has reaffirmed my commitment to cultural understanding and my passion for sharing these experiences with you, my readers. Thank you for joining me on this journey. Until next time, may your travels be filled with wonder and discovery.

As we prepare to leave, I am reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta, the famous Moroccan traveler:

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.

Indeed, Moulay Idriss has left me speechless, and I hope that I have been able to share its story with you in a way that inspires you to explore the world with an open heart and a curious mind. Goodbye, Moulay Idriss. Shukran (thank you) for the memories.
